Marvin Johnson
GREELEY -- Marvin Johnson, 72, of Greeley died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Lincoln.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Greeley United Methodist Church. The Rev. Cynthia Altstadt will officiate. Burial will be in the Greeley City cemetery with military rites conducted by American Legion Charles Martin Post 186.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
T.J. Finn and Sons Funeral Home in Greeley is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the family's choice.
Mr. Johnson was born on Nov. 7, 1925, near Greeley to Oliver and Iva (Shell) Johnson. He attended rural South Mount Pleasant School until 1937, when his family moved to the Fish Creek area near Scotia. He attended Fish Creek School through the 10th grade and graduated from Scotia High School in 1942.
He did farm work until 1945, when he joined the U.S. Army. He received a medical discharge in 1946. After leaving the service, he worked at various jobs including farming, truck driving, a gas station, road construction and driving gasoline transports.
He married
Ethel Mae Wagner on March 24, 1951. They lived in Scotia until 1957, when they moved to a farm in the Fish Creek community. They moved to a farm northwest of Greeley in 1962 and moved into Greeley in 1989.
He was a past member of the ASC Committee and the Greeley Public School board and was a member of the American Legion and the Greeley United Methodist Church. He enjoyed playing cards, visiting with friends and pulling with his 1936 CC Case tractor at antique tractor pulls.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Joyce (Mrs. Ron) Furgison of Silver Creek; five grandchildren; two sisters, Elvina (Mrs. Curtis) Jensen of Lincoln and Dorathy (Mrs. Carroll) Babcock of Kenesaw; and three brothers, Lowell Johnson of Woodbine, Iowa, Dwight Johnson of Albion and Stanley Johnson of Greeley.
Marcella White
SHELTON -- Marcella White, 77, of Shelton died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998, at her home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon. The Rev. Ray Kosmicki will officiate. Burial will be in the Gibbon Riverside Cemetery.
No visitation is planned.
Memorials are suggested to the Shelton Emergency Unit or the Shelton American Legion Auxiliary.
Mrs. White was born on Oct. 16, 1920, in Shelton to Harold and Grace (Campbell) Conroy. She grew up in Shelton, graduating from Shelton High School.
She married
Oliver S. White on June 10, 1940, in Shelton. She remained in Shelton while he served in the U.S. armed forces during World War II, and they lived in Omaha upon his return.
They moved back to Shelton in 1953. She worked at the Shelton State Bank until retiring in the early 1990s.
She was a member of the Shelton American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include one son, Robert of Shelton; four grandchildren; and a sister, Elizabeth Chambers of Shelton.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Leonard Woolsey
MASON CITY -- Leonard Lee Woolsey, 87, of Mason City died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Mason City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Mr. Woolsey was born on Aug. 12, 1911, at Tamora to Lee Roy and Jenny (McCoy) Woolsey. When he was about 4 years old, he moved with his family to a farm near Litchfield. He helped many farmers.
He married
Mary Evelyn Coffman on Dec. 7, 1933. They moved to Scottsbluff, where he worked at a cement plant as a truck driver. They moved to Mason City in 1980 to help care for Mrs. Woolsey's mother, Rozena Mortensen. They had lived in Mason City since then.
Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Martha, Bernice, Ruth and Susan; five sons, L. Henry, Dennis, Paul, Jerry and Roger; 45 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother and one sister.
Marcia Kruse
KENNEWICK, Wash. -- Marcia P. Kruse, 90, formerly of Grand Island, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, in Kennewick, Wash., where she had been living since last October.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Joel Schroeder will officiate. Private burial will be prior to services at the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Kruse was born on Sept. 12, 1907, at her grandparents' home near Nora in Nuckolls County to William Alden and Burnice X. (Merrill) Marlenee.
She lived in Edgar until moving to Lincoln in 1914. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1924 and was a member of Delta Zeta sorority at the University of Nebraska, where she studied dentistry.
She married
Louis C. Kruse in 1931 in Grand Island. They later lived in North Platte and Omaha, retired to Doniphan and then moved back to Grand Island in 1983.
She was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church and the Shrine Auxiliary.
Survivors include her daughter, Corliss (Mrs. Lawrence) Clay of Kennewick, Wash.; and two grandchildren.
Her husband died in 1997.
John Vieregg
EVANSTON, Ill. -- John Albert Vieregg, 92, of Evanston, Ill., formerly of Grand Island, died Friday, Aug. 28, 1998, at the Wagner Health Care Center in Evanston.
Memorial services were on Monday at William H. Scott Funeral Home in Wilmette, Ill. The Rev. Davis Fisher officiated.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
Mr. Vieregg was born on Feb. 24, 1906, at Grand Island. He was an accountant for Illinois Bell.
He married
Mary Louise Doolittle. She died on May 31, 1990.
Mr. Vieregg had been a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Deerfield, Ill. He served as an elder there and aided in the gardening at the church.
He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and was active with the Deerfield Boy Scouts.
Survivors include two sons, John of Osage Beach, Mo., and James of Wheaton, Ill.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Rossow.
Elmer Christensen
Elmer C. Christensen, 88, of 4087 W. Capital Ave. died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at Community Care of America Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Calvary Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dennis Reich officiating. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Kleine Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 3 to 5 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to Calvary Lutheran Church.
Mr. Christensen was born on April 26, 1910, at Dannevirke to Lars and Anna (Jensen) Christensen. He grew up on the family farm and attended District 69 school.
He married
Mary Mickelsen on Oct. 2, 1940, at Ord. They lived on farmland they purchased at Dannevirke. He bought, sold and raised cattle for many years. The couple enjoyed square dancing. They continued to farm and raise cattle until 1974, when they retired and moved to Grand Island. He continued to have a large yard and garden.
He served as president of the Dannevirke church board and cemetery board. He also served on the Dannevirke community hall board. He and his wife were honorary altar guild members at Calvary Lutheran Church for 22 years. He enjoyed hunting and traveling and was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Grand Island; and a special friend, Sharon Fischer.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Elisa, and four brothers, Niels, Alfred, Peter and Holger.
