U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Reuben McIntosh

NORTH PLATTE -- Reuben A. McIntosh, 86, of North Platte, formerly of Grand Island, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at Centennial Park Retirement Village.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the North Platte Cemetery.

Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Carpenter Memorial Chapel in North Platte.

Mr. McIntosh was born on March 23, 1912, at Marquette to Robert and Maggie M. (Decker) McIntosh. He graduated from high school in 1931. He married Mildred Wagner at Central City on Feb. 20, 1934. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 34 years and lived in North Platte since 1949.

He was a member of Eagles Lodge No. 378 in Grand Island and the Union Pacific Railroad Clerks Union. He enjoyed working on, buying and selling cars. He built two pontoon boats. He enjoyed working with his hands, doing yard work, gardening, hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred, of North Platte; one son, Gordon "Jerry" McIntosh of North Platte; two brothers, Ben of Marquette and James of Hemit, Calif.; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by seven brothers, Orville, Joe, Fay, Ernest, Clyde, Guy and Forrest; and two sisters, Ethel McIntosh and Verna Youngs.

Elmer Christensen

Elmer C. Christensen, 88, of 4087 W. Capital Ave. died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at Community Care of America.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Calvary Lutheran Church. The Rev. Dennis Reich will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday at Kleine Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary.

Walter Ahrens

HASTINGS -- Walter "Walt" Ahrens, 82, of Perkins Pavilion at Good Samaritan Village in Hastings, formerly of Kenesaw, died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at Perkins Pavilion.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Kenesaw. The Rev. Paul Duffy will officiate. Burial will be in the Kenesaw Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday at Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home in Kenesaw. Further visitation will be one hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the church or the Kenesaw Volunteer Fire Department.

Mr. Ahrens was born on Feb. 5, 1916, on a farm in Buffalo County to Leopold and Emma (Arnold) Ahrens. He grew up and attended school in Buffalo County. He moved to the Kenesaw area in 1935.

He married Esther Marie Rainers on Nov. 15, 1938. He farmed from 1938 to 1976. He was an auctioneer from 1950 to 1989. He was a real estate broker and appraiser from 1956 to 1990. He sold Pioneer Seed for 42 years. Mrs. Ahrens died on Aug. 27, 1971.

Mr. Ahrens married Ruth Schwartz Tanner on July 20, 1973. He moved into Kenesaw in 1973. He moved to Good Samaritan Village in 1992. Mrs. Ahrens died on June 20, 1994.

Mr. Ahrens was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Kenesaw.

Survivors include two daughters, Darlene (Mrs. Richard) Synek of Edgar and Bonnie Hansen of North Platte; one son, Dennis Ahrens of Kenesaw; one stepson, John Tanner of Columbus; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Martin Ahrens of Ravenna and Paul Ahrens of McCook.

He was preceded in death by one son, Darwin; one sister, Katie; and one brother, Herman.

Katherine Kanter

PALMER -- Katherine Kanter of Palmer died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.

Services are pending with Palmer's Funeral Home in Palmer.

Harold Kvam NEWMAN GROVE -- Harold E. Kvam, 79, of Newman Grove, formerly of Albion, died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at the Boone County Health Center in Albion.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Immaculate Zion Lutheran Church at rural Albion. The Revs. Larry Spomer and David Loeschen will officiate. Burial will be in North Branch East cemetery at rural Petersburg.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service, Sunday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.

Carl Lewandowski

LOUP CITY -- Carl Wenzel Lewandowski, 70, of Loup City died Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at Rose Lane Home in Loup City.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City. The Rev. Reginald A. Urban will officiate. Burial will be in the Arcadia Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., with vigil celebration at 7:30 p.m., Sunday at Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Lewandowski was born on Aug. 29, 1927, at Ashton to Anton and Sophie (Rewolinski) Lewandowski. He attended Sherman County rural schools.

He married Charlene Palser on Aug. 8, 1949, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Scotia. They farmed at Loup City until 1953 and then moved to a farm southwest of Arcadia. He retired and moved into Arcadia in 1988 and then to Loup City in 1996. He had lived at Rose Lane Home since August 1997.

He served on the Sherman County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Community Committee for 15 years and on the Washington Township Board for many years. He also served on the committee to build a new Catholic church in Arcadia after the tornado in 1974.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, baseball and the sports events in which his children participated.

Survivors include his wife; seven daughters, Karen (Mrs. Gary) Greenland and Barbara (Mrs. Kenny) Dorsey, both of Arcadia, Linda (Mrs. James) Obermiller, Diane (Mrs. Kenneth) Loeffelbein and Carla Lonowski, all of Loup City, Mitzi (Mrs. Lonnie) Tvrdik of Elsie and Cheryl (Mrs. Sam) Dunn of Beaver City; three sons, Ron and David Lewandowski, both of Arcadia, and Robert "Dallas" Lewandowski of Loup City; 25 grandchildren; two brothers, Fred Lewandowski of Ansley and Dale Lewandowski of Loup City; and six sisters, Rozella Silver of Minneapolis, Harriet Palski and Esther Kaminski, both of Omaha, Mary Ann Owens and Donette Holcomb, both of Arcadia, and Marge Larimer of Billings, Mont.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn (Mrs. Ray) Janulewicz.

Pauline Sack

ST. PAUL -- Pauline M. Sack, 82, of St. Paul died Thursday, Aug. 6, 1998, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. The Revs. Michael McDermott, Jack Rademacher, Robert Rooney and James Murphy will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery at St. Paul.

Visitation will be from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul and from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the church with a wake service at 7:30. Further visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. until service time Monday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the Martin Luther Home, the hospital or to the family.

Mrs. Sack was born on May 27, 1916, in the Gage Valley area of Howard County to William and Anna Lukasiewicz Sidel. She attended school at Gage Valley and graduated from St. Paul High School in 1934.

She married George Sack on Oct. 22, 1935, at St. Paul. The couple lived on a farm south of St. Paul for 33 years and then moved into St. Paul.

She worked in cafes for many years, at Delicious Foods for four years and at Sts. Peter and Paul School for 12 years.

Her hobbies included cooking and canning.

She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the Altar Society, which she served as president. She was a past member of a rural extension club.

Survivors include three sons, William, Jerry and David, all of St. Paul; two daughters, Cookie (Mrs. Gene) Bahensky of St. Paul and Mary (Mrs. Jim) Hedrick of Grand Island; 20 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Sister Ann Francis Sidol of Grand Island, Ollie Kotilla of Cleveland and Xena (Mrs. Ralph) Coons of Simi Valley, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Darlene Schmidt; and one brother, Donald.
