U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Margaret Golka

BROKEN BOW -- Margaret Ruth Golka, 78, of Broken Bow died Wednesday, April 29, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Cliff Reynolds will officiate. Burial will be in the Arcadia Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Mrs. Golka was born on Sept. 4, 1919, at Ragan to John Hall and Clara Belle (Black) Elliott. She attended school at Ragan. At the age of 14, she moved with her family to Arcadia. She graduated from Arcadia High School in 1937.

She married Elmer Golka on March 19, 1943. They later divorced. She lived on a farm between Ord and Arcadia and later moved to Kearney. She worked for Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney for eight years and Kaufmann and Warnerts for 12 years. She moved to Broken Bow in 1982.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Christian Women's Group and Prairie Pioneer Center. She led a Bible study at Regency Place in Broken Bow.

Survivors include one sister, Belle Benson of Broken Bow; and one brother, Harold Elliott of Arcadia.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Virgil Zegar

GENOA -- Virgil C. Zegar, 71, of Genoa died Wednesday, April 29, 1998, at his home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Lawrence's Catholic Church in Silver Creek. The Rev. Ken Vavrina will officiate. Burial will be in St. Lawrence's Catholic cemetery at Silver Creek.

Visitation will be after 4 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. vigil, Friday at the church. Further visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.

McKown Funeral Home of Silver Creek is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Zegar was born on May 31, 1926, at Silver Creek to Phillip and Anna (Boro) Zegar. He grew up and attended District 32 School in Nance County.

He married Shirley Gerber on Aug. 29, 1950. He farmed his entire life.

He was a member of St. Lawrence's Catholic Church in Silver Creek.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Deb (Mrs. Steve) Bonk, Beverly (Mrs. Robert) Powers and Barb (Mrs. Joe) White, all of Columbus; one son, Bob of Columbus; 12 grandchildren; four step grandchildren; five sisters, Rose Beck of Columbus, Mary (Mrs. Leo) Chohon of Silver Creek, Lillian Kuhn of Central City and Clara (Mrs. Lambert) Zoucha and Monica Zoucha, both of Clarks; and a half brother, Alex Olsan of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Henry Zegar.

Hanna Bonsall

LINCOLN -- Hanna Bonsall, 84, of Lincoln died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, in Lincoln.

Memorial service will be private.

Memorials are suggested to Young Life or the Grand Isle Heritage Zoo.

Metcalf Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Bonsall was born on Feb. 18, 1914, at Fairbury.

She married Howard Bonsall in 1933 in Fairbury. They farmed northwest of Lincoln until moving to York for three years and then to Grand Island from 1941 to 1992. She then moved to Lincoln.

Mrs. Bonsall was a homemaker, and she helped her husband form Bonsall Pool Co. in 1951 while living in Grand Island.

She was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist.

Survivors include two sons, Jim Bonsall of Broomfield, Colo., and Ken Bonsall of Lincoln; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Bob Lien of Billings, Mont.; and two sisters, Helen (Mrs. Ray) Parker of Colorado and Marion (Mrs. Vern) Tindall of Hastings.

She was preceded in death by her husband and one brother.

Lloy Thurman

OCONTO -- J. Lloy Thurman, 92, of Oconto died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at Callaway District Hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Oconto with the Rev. Dale Coates officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery at Callaway.

Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow.

A memorial has been established to the United Methodist Church in Callaway.

Mr. Thurman was born on Dec. 18, 1905, in the Lower Lodi community in Custer County to Albert and Nora (Van Cleave) Thurman. He attended Lower Lodi School and graduated from Callaway High School in 1923.

He also attended Kearney State Teachers College. Mr. Thurman taught for several years in rural schools and high school.

He married Mabel Parrish on May 25, 1927, in Broken Bow. They farmed and ranched and lived in a sod house on the Bryner place. They later moved to a farm near Oconto.

Mr. Thurman was a member of the United Methodist Church in Oconto and Masonic Lodge No. 207 in Callaway for more than 70 years.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Keith Thurman of Ten Sleep, Wyo., L. Duane Thurman of Tulsa, Okla., and Ronald Thurman of Bryson City, N.C.; two daughters, Dolores (Mrs. Dick) Weatherly of McPherson, Kan., and Joan (Mrs. Delton) Schubert of Arvada, Colo.; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Wayne Thurman of Florence, Ariz., and Dale Thurman of Arlington, Va.; and one sister, Fern (Mrs. Chuck) Davis of Lakewood, Colo.

He was preceded in death by three brothers.

Anna Zulkoski

North Platte -- Anna Zulkoski, 93, of North Platte, formerly of Sargent, died Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at Great Plains Medical Center in North Platte.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sargent. The Rev. Bernard Berger will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. A rosary will follow at 7 p.m. at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the church.

Mrs. Zulkoski was born on July 4, 1904, in Valley County to Frank and Emma (Ptacnik) Valasek. She attended Longwood School east of Sargent.

She married Casimir "Casper" Zulkoski on Feb. 15, 1928, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sargent. They farmed for three years in Valley County, then moved seven miles east of Sargent and farmed. They bought a home in Sargent in 1956. Mr. Zulkoski died in 1981. Mrs. Zulkoski moved to North Platte four years ago to live with her daughter.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Mary's Altar Society and a lifetime member of the Bohemian Lodge ZCBJ Lodge Slovin No. 112.

Survivors include one son, Gerald Zulkoski of Overton; a daughter, Alyce Zulkoski of North Platte; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter; three brothers, Frank, John and Joseph Valasek; and two sisters, Mary Visek and Emma Vodehnal.

Garland Frasier

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Garland L. "Garney" Frasier, 93, of Fort Collins, Colo., formerly of Grand Island, died Sunday, April 26, 1998.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the foothills west of Fort Collins. Reager Funeral Home and Crematory of Fort Collins is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Frasier donated his body to education through the Colorado Anatomical Board.

Memorials are suggested to the Padre School District.

Mr. Frasier was born on Aug. 12, 1904, in Mason City to Guy Francis and Karen Marie Frasier. He graduated in 1923 from Mason City High School, where he was a football, basketball and track champion.

After graduation, he went to work for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co., beginning a 47-year career with the Bell System.

He married Ada Hiddleson in 1924 and lived and worked in the Loup City and Grand Island areas until her death.

He married Doris Marie Gart in 1942. They lived in Omaha during the 1950s and '60s. He retired from the Bell System in 1969, and the couple moved to Fort Collins, Colo., where they enjoyed traveling, gardening, picnics, fishing and the Rocky Mountains.

He was a Boy Scout leader and an elder in the Mount View Presbyterian Church. He was a 50-year member of Ashlar Lodge 33 and a lifelong member of the Bell System Pioneers.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Tom and Mark; four grandchildren; a sister, Polly; and a brother, Bill.
