Effie Dahlsten
ERICSON -- Effie Dahlsten, 82, of Ericson died Thursday, April 23, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Ericson with the Rev. Cynthia Altstadt officiating. Burial will be in the Pible Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Ericson United Methodist Church. Memorials may be given to the family. T.J. Finn and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Dahlsten was born March 14, 1916, at Loretta in Boone County to Edward and Effie May (Nott) Cook. The family moved to Holt County for a time before moving to the Pible Lake area, where they operated a hotel. She attended rural school near Pible Lake.
She married
Peter Dahlsten on Dec. 26, 1934, at Spalding. They farmed and ranched south of Ericson on the Dahlsten homestead next to the Cedar River. They retired in 1972. Mr. Dahlsten died on Dec. 11, 1990. Mrs. Dahlsten continued to live at home until October of 1997, when she moved to the Valley County Nursing Home.
Mrs. Dahlsten was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. She had been a member of the Rebekah Lodge at Ericson and also had belonged to the Rancherettes Extension Club at Ericson.
Survivors include three sons, Donald of Ericson, Peter Broc of Sierra Vista, Ariz. and Mark of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three daughters, Caroline Dahlsten and Bebe Dahlsten, both of Ericson, and Angelynn Dahlsten of Phoenix, Ariz.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter; two sisters, Viola Galland of Yakima, Wash.; Bea Andrews of Ericson; and a brother, Ike Cook of Payson, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her husband; an infant son, Oakie, in 1947; five sisters, two brothers, two grandsons, a great-granddaughter and a great-great-granddaughter.
Fred Larson
LOUP CITY -- Fred Larson, 102, of Loup City died Saturday, April 25, 1998, at the Rose Lane Home in Loup City.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Grace United Methodist Church in Boelus. The Rev. Alan Davis will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery in Loup City.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church. Rasmussen Mortuary of Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Larson was born May 8, 1895, on a farm northwest of Loup City to Charles and Emelia (Anderson) Larson. He received his education in the Loup City schools. As a young man, he helped his father with a draying business and farming. He enjoyed fishing and playing baseball. He always had been associated with farming and gardening. Mr. Larson farmed near Loup City and was known for his threshing ability, which he continued for 50 years.
He married
Fannie Clipston on Jan. 25, 1922, in Loup City. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1972 in Boelus. The couple retired to Boelus in 1963, but continued to raise a big garden and have cows and chickens. They celebrated their 65th anniversary before Mrs. Larson died in September of 1988.
Survivors include a son, Raymond of Boelus; a sister, Ida Heil of Loup City; three grandsons; 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife and three brothers.
Cody Majerus
ALBION -- Cody James Majerus, 5, of Albion died Thursday, April 23, 1998, at Boone County Health Center in Albion as the result of an accident that occurred at his home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church in Albion with the Revs. Brian Bergum and Ray Avidano officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Albion.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Cody was born Jan. 6, 1993 to George and Cindy (Choat) Majerus at Albion. As the first child born in Albion in 1993, he was honored as the 1993 New Year's Baby. He had been attending the Head Start program in Albion since fall 1997.
Survivors include his parents; two brothers, Kyle and Tyler both of Albion; one sister, Lacy of Albion; three grandparents, Alan and Judy Choat of Albion and Doris Majerus of Central City and two great-grandparents, Cecil and Marguerite Roberts of Albion.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Zachary and one grandfather, Peter Majerus.
Beatrice Rhodes
AURORA -- Beatrice Ione Rhodes, 86, of Aurora, formerly of Giltner, died Friday, April 24, 1998, in Aurora.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Giltner United Methodist Church. The Rev. Richard L. Brian will officiate. Burial will be in the Giltner Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Mrs. Rhodes was born on Nov. 28, 1911, to Ethan and Bertha (Chaney) Kingston at Giltner. She grew up and graduated from Giltner High School in 1929. She then attended Hastings Business College and was later employed at local business firms in Giltner and later by the Home Owners Loan Company in Grand Island.
She married
David Rhodes on Aug. 30, 1936, at her parent's home in Giltner. They lived in Pittsfield, Ill., for 15 years where she worked for the Pike County Home Bureau and the office of Price Administration. They were later partners in the Pittsfield Gamble Store.
They returned to Nebraska and she was employed as a secretary for Consumers Public Power District at Grand Island. They moved to Giltner where she was a bookkeeper and secretary for the Giltner Public Schools for 15 years. Mr. Rhodes preceded her in death on Oct. 12, 1968. She moved to Aurora in 1995.
She was a lifetime member of the Giltner United Methodist Church. She belonged to the United Methodist Women and was a charter member of the Evening Circle. She was a past member of the National Secretary's Association, Rebekah Lodge, Giltner Woman's Club and Giltner Project Club.
Survivors include a sister, Madge Haymart of Aurora.
Other than her husband she was preceded in death by one brother, Gordon Kingston and two sisters, Clarice Reynolds and Bernice Kingston.
Lenora Voss
CAIRO -- Lenora E. Voss, 86, of rural Cairo died Saturday, April 25, 1998, at the Community Care Center of Grand Island.
Services are pending with Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Lucy Zauha
St. PAUL -- Lucy R. Zauha, 90, of St. Paul died Saturday, April 25, 1998, at the Howard County Hospital in St. Paul.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul with the Rev. Michael McDermott officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood cemetery in St. Paul. Memorials are suggested to the heart fund or the church.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday at the Jacobsen Funeral Home and from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, with a wake service at 7:30 p.m. Further visitation will be held at the church from 8 a.m. Tuesday until service time.
Mrs. Zauha was born March 22, 1908, at St. Mary, NE. to Frank and Teckla (Goracke) Sack. In 1919, she moved with her family to St. Paul. Later, the family moved to a farm southwest of St. Paul. She attended rural school District 79 and grew up on the family farm.
She married
Michael Zauha at St. Paul. The couple farmed near Elba. Mr. Zauha died Jan. 8, 1939. She later moved to St. Paul where, for many years, she made her home with her sister on a farm southwest of St. Paul.
Mrs. Zauha was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Bertha Deminski and Bregida Becker, both of Grand Island, and a brother, Roy of St. Paul.
She was preceded in death by seven brothers, Martin, George, Bernard, Paul, Ernest, Clemence and Raymond; a sister, Nora Sack, and an infant sister, Clara.
Jeannette Smith
Jeannette I. Smith, 81, of Grand Island died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at her home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Nebraska Children's Home.
Mrs. Smith was born on March 26, 1917, at Ringling, Mont., to James and Viola (Bucklend) Shaw. She moved in 1922 to Palmer, where she was raised and educated.
She married
Gordon Smith on July 28, 1938. They lived in Palmer through most of their marriage before moving to Grand Island in 1983. Mr. Smith died on May 30, 1986.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the Methodist faith and the Daughters of the Nile.
Survivors include five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Michael Wayne Smith; a twin brother, James Cook; and another brother, Fred Cook.
Edwin Chilewski
LOUP CITY -- Edwin C. Chilewski, 88, of Loup City died Thursday, April 23, 1998, at his farm home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City. Richard E. Fritz will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Loup City.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Hospice or the family.
Mr. Chilewski, the grandson of Sherman County pioneers, was born on Nov. 11, 1909, in Rockville to John and Agness (Goc) Chilewski. He graduated from District 28 School in 1924.
He farmed with his father until his marriage to Florence Badura on Oct. 28, 1936, at Loup City. The couple began farming on a rented place but purchased their farm west of Loup City in 1944.
Their farm was once known as that "pile of sand" because of its poor soil. However, Mr. Chilewski was given the Conservationist of the Year Award in 1949 by the Soil Conservation Service. The Omaha World-Herald also gave him a Service Award for his efforts in converting the land into a productive farm property within five years.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Arleta (Mrs. Peter) Levering of Grand Island and Adeline (Mrs. Robert) Wylie of Mississippi; a son, Kenneth of Loup City; six grandchildren; and a sister, Alta Maciejewski of Loup City.
He was preceded in death by a son, Norbert; and a sister, Evelyn Peacock.
