Julius Grzywa
FULLERTON -- Julius V. Grzywa, 81, of Fullerton died Monday, April 20, 1998, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Fullerton. The Rev. Richard Whiteing will officiate. Burial will be in the Fullerton Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m., Tuesday at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton.
Mr. Grzywa was born on March 28, 1917, on a farm southwest of North Star to Frank and Catherine (Kozial) Grzywa. He attended District 50 School in Nance County.
He served in the U.S. Army, 155th Infantry, Dixie Division, 31st Regiment, 1st Battalion, C Company, 2nd Squad, in New Guinea and the southern Philippines during World War II as a bar rifleman.
He married
Catherine E. Badura on June 15, 1948, at Fullerton. He was a self-employed mason and carpenter.
He was a lifetime member of the 1st Battalion, 155th Infantry Association.
Survivors include two sons, Jerome of Fullerton and Thomas of Richmond, Va.; three daughters, Janet Johnson of Hastings, Elizabeth "Betty" Duncan of Lakewood, Colo., and Patricia (Mrs. Christopher) Powers of Fayetteville, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; and one sister, Elizabeth Kula of Graceville, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his wife, three brothers and four sisters.
Ruth Wert
AURORA -- Ruth Meleta Wert, 86, of Aurora died Sunday, April 19, 1998, at the Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Aurora United Methodist Church. The Rev. Joe Scahill will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Mrs. Wert was born on Aug. 17, 1911, at Hampton to Jacob and Elizabeth (Nickolaus) George. She grew up and was educated near Hampton.
She married
John Wert on Feb. 17, 1935, at Marysville, Kan. The couple farmed near Bradshaw and Aurora and moved into Aurora. She entered the Hamilton Manor on July 31, 1985. He died on March 28, 1987.
She was a member of the Aurora United Methodist Church and a past member of the National Campers and Hikers Association. She loved music.
Survivors include one son, Gail Wert of Aurora; one daughter, Carolyn (Mrs. Ronald) Henning of Lincoln; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Edmund George of Hampton.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Gary Wert; two brothers, Elmer and Willis George; and three sisters, Esther Hahle, Frances Harter and Mildred Traudt.
Lloyd Wright
JUNIATA -- Lloyd W. Wright, 74, of Juniata died Sunday, April 19, 1998, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Faith Lutheran Church in Hastings. The Rev. Carl H. Rehwaldt will officiate. Burial will be in the Juniata Cemetery.
Butler-Volland Funeral Home of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the cemetery.
Mr. Wright was born on Aug. 7, 1923, in rural Adams County to William W. and Emma (Gruener) Wright. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1940.
He married
Luella Krueger on June 11, 1944. She died on April 15, 1996. Mr. Wright was a lifelong resident of rural Juniata, where he farmed.
He married
Shirley Raines on Aug. 9, 1997.
He was a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church. He served for many years on the Juniata school board and the Adams Central school board. He was instrumental in forming Adams Central High School.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ronald Wright and Roger Wright, both of Hastings; one daughter, Gloria Katzberg of Juniata; one stepson, Kenneth Raines of Mankato, Minn.; four stepdaughters, Kathy Suer of Little Canada, Minn., Judy Corrigon of Coon Rapids, Minn., Jeannie Zanosko of St. Louis Park, Minn., and Kay Kuster of Wells, Minn.; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; seven step grandchildren; and one brother, Gail Wright of Hastings.
Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death one daughter, Beverly Bruntz; one sister and one brother.
Agnes Hoffman
YORK -- Agnes S. Hoffman, 94, of York died Monday, April 20, 1998, at York.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York. The Rev. Arthur Brinkmeyer will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery in York.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Metz Mortuary in York.
Memorials are suggested to the church or Hearthstone Nursing Home.
Mrs. Hoffman was born on March 2, 1904, in Gosper County near Arapahoe to Herman and Wilhelmina (Friedank) Weber. She lived in Arapahoe before moving to Grand Island, where she baby-sat for several area families.
She married
Hugo R. Grosse on Dec. 12, 1937, at Grand Island.
She married
Harold A. Hoffman on Feb. 14, 1983, at York.
Survivors include one stepdaughter, Dorothy (Mrs. Russell) Troester of Hampton; five step grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by both husbands, four brothers and three sisters.
Horace Crosby
SILVER SPRING, Md. -- Horace E. Crosby, 82, of Silver Spring, Md., formerly of Grand Island, died March 26, 1998, in Silver Spring.
He married
Catherine Huwaldt of Grand Island in 1940. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the infantry in the Pacific Theater. He practiced law in North Platte until 1957, when he moved to Silver Spring, where he became an attorney for the Department of Agriculture.
He had lived in Silver Spring, Md., for 41 years.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Elery Kay Crosby and Martha Ann Crosby, both of Silver Spring; and one brother, Robert Crosby of Lincoln.
He was preceded in death by one sister.
Mildred Manning
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Mildred E. Manning, 85, of Glendale, Ariz., formerly of Custer County, died April 14, 1998, in Glendale, Ariz.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. The Rev. Tom Coll will officiate. Burial will be in Somerford cemetery near Sargent.
Mrs. Manning was born on April 30, 1912, at Oskaloosa, Kan., to James and Lydia Sevier. She grew up in the Sargent area and graduated from Sargent High School. She taught school near Taylor and Broken Bow.
She married
Ralph Manning on Dec. 22, 1930, at Anselmo. They lived in the Anselmo area. They moved to Glendale, Ariz., in 1967.
Survivors include three sons, Robert of Lewiston, Idaho, Garold of Glendale, Ariz., and Norman of Stillwater, Okla.; 14 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Ronald and Ellwood; one granddaughter; one brother, Dale; and four sisters, Odie, Eunice, Delia and Mabel.
