Clyde Campbell
Clyde Percy Everett Campbell, 84, of Grand Island died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at St. Francis Skilled Care Center after a bout with cancer.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Brewster Cemetery, with the Rev. Doug Stensby of Messiah Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Kleine Funeral Home in Grand Island. A family service will begin at 5 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dale Strong officiating.
Memorials are suggested to the St. Francis Hospice or Messiah Lutheran Church.
Mr. Campbell was born on June 13, 1913, in Taylor to George D. and Stella A. (Dutton) Campbell. He grew up in Taylor and graduated from Taylor High School. He graduated with a certificate of teacher's exams in May 1931 after two years of Normal training.
He married
Ruth Idora Spencer of Brewster in May 1932. She died in 1943.
He practice taught at Kent, then taught grades five through eight in Brewster from 1935-38. From 1944-49, he was teaching superintendent at Brewster Public Schools. He finished his career in education at Morrison, Ill., where he was superintendent of the elementary schools for 20 years. He retired in July 1973.
He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1950, and master's degree in school administration in 1954 from the University of Illinois in Dekalb.
He was an avid photographer and, while living in Morrison, he was president of the Morrison Camera Club. He also was an active deacon in the Presbyterian Church of Morrison.
He married
Susan L. Overfield on Nov. 9, 1973. They lived in Mesa, Ariz., from October 1974 to May 1988. While living in Arizona, he organized a hiking club and hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. The couple then moved to Hastings, then to West Park Plaza in Grand Island.
He was a member of the National Retired Teachers Association and enjoyed family and high school reunions.
Survivors include his wife of Grand Island; two sons, Rodney of Norton, Kan., and Robert of Yoncalla, Ore.; two sisters, Adah (Mrs. Allan) Strong and Louella (Mrs. Jay) Lees, both of Hastings; one brother, Arnold of Mesa; 13 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Archie Campbell.
Robert Cornelius
AURORA -- Robert Cornelius, 79, of Aurora and formerly of Phillips, died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at the Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Phillips United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Richard Brian and Terry Otto officiating. Burial will be in the Phillips Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Survivors include his wife, Esther of Aurora; one daughter, Sharol Reab of Santa Rosa, Calif.; two sisters, Betty Mabon of Phillips and Erma Bergholz of Grand Island; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Albert Oswald
AURORA -- Albert Oswald, 94, of Aurora died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at the Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Aurora Pleasant View Bible Church. The Revs. Barry McCormick and Aaron Juett will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Mr. Oswald was born on a farmstead southwest of Aurora on Sept. 28, 1903, to Daniel and Eda Adelia (Bald) Oswald. He grew up and attended school near his birthplace.
He married
Anna Bachman on Sept. 9, 1930, in Washington, Ill. After their marriage they farmed southwest of Aurora until they moved into Aurora in 1972. She died on March 3, 1998. He entered the Hamilton Manor in Aurora on Aug. 19, 1991.
He was an active member of the Aurora Pleasant View Bible Church since 1916. He was also a member of the REA board for 30 years, had served on the Aurora Memorial Hospital board for 24 years and was a Plainsman Museum board member for a number of years.
Survivors include two sons, David Oswald and Louis "Buzz" Oswald, both of Aurora; one sister, Freda (Mrs. Albert) Springer of Aurora; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers, Willis and Edwin, and one great-granddaughter.
Fannie Porter
ORD -- Fannie Porter, 100, of Ord died Saturday, April 18, 1998, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ord, with the Rev. Keith Menter officiating. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Porter was born on July 1, 1897, to Frank and Gertrude (Mueller) Aden at Royal, Ill. When she was a child, her family moved to Nebraska. She grew up and attended school in Bruning.
She married
Charles Houser in Bruning on March 7, 1917. The couple moved to Burwell and lived there until 1943, when they moved to Ord. Her husband died in November 1965.
She remained in Ord and later married
Wayne Porter in September 1976 in Ord. The coupled lived at Parkview Village in Ord until he died in June 1989. She then moved to the Ord Rest Home until Oct. 1, 1993, then became a resident of the Valley County Nursing Center and lived there until until her death.
For many years, she worked at the Golden Rule department store in Ord. She was a member of the church and the Rebekah Lodge, where she served as the "Noble Grand."
She enjoyed gardening, flowers, sewing, crocheting, ceramics, oil painting, traveling and fishing. She also was an avid Cubs baseball fan.
Survivors include one son, Frank Houser of Cave Junction, Ore.; two daughters, Ona Jean (Mrs. Jack) Harvey of Overland Park, Kan., and Patricia Wiberg of Fountain, Colo.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by both husbands; two sons, Keith Houser and Burdette Houser, two brothers and one sister.
Mildred Manning
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Mildred Manning, 85, of Glendale, Ariz., and formerly of Custer County, died Tuesday, April 14, 1998, in Glendale.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow ,with the Rev. Tom Coll officiating. Burial will be in the Somerford cemetery near Sargent, with Govier Brothers in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Robert W. Scheffel
Robert W. Scheffel, 72, of Grand Island died Saturday April 18, 1998, at the St. Francis Medical Center Emergency Room.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday with a family prayer service at 9:45 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Robert Harms will be officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. on Monday with the family greeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the church or donors choice.
Mr. Scheffel was born on July 17, 1925, in Grand Island to William F. and Dorothea (Gloe) Scheffel. He was raised in Grand Island, and attended Trinity Lutheran School. He graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1943.
He entered the U.S. Army on December 1943 serving during World War II in the 106th Infantry Division. He was a POW for six months after being captured in Belgium. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 23, 1945.
Following the military, Scheffel returned to Grand Island. He attended the University of Nebraska and began working for the Scheffel and Sons Monument Co. in 1949.
He was married
to Viola Lessig on June 15, 1952, in Grand Island. They made their home in Grand Island where Robert became co-owner of Scheffel and Sons Monument Co. He retired in 1987.
Scheffel was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Golden Years, the church choir, the Lutheran Laymen League and served on the Board of Elders. He was a past superintendent of Sunday school, taught Sunday school and was a member of the Liederkranz and the Saddle Club. He also was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Prisoners of War Chapter.
Survivors include his wife; two sisters, Doris Clark of Grand Island; his twin sister Roberta Schroeder of Omaha; one brother, William Scheffel of San Diego, Calif.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Arlene Scheffel.
