Virgil Christensen
Virgil Delayne Christensen, 77, of Grand Island died April 6, 1998, in Aurora, Colo.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Messiah Lutheran Church.
Parker Funeral Home of Parker, Colo., is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mr. Christensen was born on Aug. 2, 1920, in Genoa to Laurence and Pearl (Evans) Christensen. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II.
He married
Naomi Staab on Oct. 19, 1947. He was a rancher, bank president and a real estate developer.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Larry Christensen of Sumter, S.C.; two daughters, Pamela (Mrs. Harold) Cole of Aurora, Colo., and Diane (Mrs. David) Healy of Elizabeth, Colo.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Leona Hodge of Sumter, S.C., and JoAnn (Mrs. Bob) Steele of Kimball.
Walter Kleier
KENESAW -- Walter H. Kleier, 78, of Kenesaw died Thursday, April 16, 1998, at Good Samaritan Village in Hastings.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Kenesaw. The Rev. Brian Pummell will officiate. Burial will be in the Kenesaw Cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Jackson-Wilson Funeral Home in Kenesaw.
Memorials are suggested to the Lutheran Hour or the donor's choice.
Mr. Kleier was born on Feb. 6, 1920, at Roseland to Herman and Elizabeth (Bunde) Kleier. He attended Kelley District 35 School for eight years.
He married
Agnes Klusman on March 28, 1948, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Kenesaw. He farmed in the Kenesaw area and moved into Kenesaw in 1967. Mrs. Kleier died on March 12, 1998.
Mr. Kleier was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Kenesaw.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Elsie Jacobitz and Ede Kuehn; and five brothers, Ed, Otto, Art, Alfred and Herman.
Lyal Nickel
ST. PAUL -- Lyal D. Nickel, 72, of St. Paul died Thursday, April 16, 1998, at Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Rosalie Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Nickel was born on Jan. 31, 1926, at Archer to Frank and Elsie (Butt) Nickel. He grew up in the Archer area and graduated from Archer Schools.
He served in the U.S. Army.
He married
Dorla Rodysill on Feb. 15, 1949, at Central City. The couple moved to Crawford, where he worked for the Soil Conservation Service. He farmed near Ashland before moving to St. Paul. He quit farming and worked for the St. Paul Veterinary Clinic and Farmers Co-op for 17 years. Mrs. Nickel died on Dec. 27, 1988.
Mr. Nickel married
Connie Gleason on Jan. 20, 1990, in St. Paul. He was retired but still worked as a crop adjuster.
He enjoyed playing cards and played baseball in his younger years. He enjoyed raising Canada geese and other birds, woodworking and planting trees on his acreage.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Matt of Jacksonville, Fla.; two daughters, Nikki (Mrs. Randy) Mason of Pawnee City and Kay (Mrs. Albert) Robbins of Hastings; a stepson, Rodney Gleason of Omaha; one stepdaughter, Kim (Mrs. James) Kudrna of Leigh; five granddaughters; and two step granddaughters.
Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Edgar; and one sister, Mildred Dangler.
Frederic Wiseman
GIBBON -- Frederic Wiseman, 83, of Gibbon died Friday, April 17, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Funeral services are pending with Apfel Funeral Home of Wood River.
Paul Howard
Paul W. Howard, 78, of Grand Island died Wednesday, April 15, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Douglas Stensby will officiate. Mr. Howard will be cremated following the service.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Messiah Lutheran Church, the American Diabetes Association or the Kidney Foundation.
Mr. Howard was born on Feb. 16, 1920, at Rea, Mo., to Clayborne and Lillis (Peters) Howard. He moved as a child with his parents to South Sioux City, where he was educated. He graduated from South Sioux City High School in 1940.
He then moved to California, where he worked in a meat-processing plant. He entered the U.S. Army Air Force on April 30, 1942, and served during World War II until Sept. 26, 1945.
He married
Margaret Carlson on March 3, 1945, at Jamestown, N.Y. The couple lived in South Sioux City, where he was a salesman for Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. He was transferred to Bellevue and then to Grand Island, where they lived for 45 years.
He retired in 1981 after 35 years with Firestone. In their retirement, they wintered in Phoenix and spent several summers in Minnesota.
He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and loved traveling and fishing.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Carol Howard and Beverly Logue, both of Grand Island; three grandsons; one great-grandson; two brothers, Harry Howard of Sioux City, Iowa, and Robert Howard of Dakota City; and two sisters, Virginia (Mrs. Llan) Nielsen and June Lockwood, both of South Sioux City.
Paul 'Pat' Bond
STROMSBURG -- Paul 'Pat' Y. Bond, 90, of Stromsburg died Thursday, April 16, 1998, at his home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Stromsburg United Methodist Church. The Rev. Lester Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Palmer Funeral Home and prior to services at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Stromsburg Senior Center.
Mr. Bond was born on March 10, 1908, at Gresham to George and Elizabeth (Yeoman) Bond. He graduated from Osceola High School.
He married
Belle Johnson on Feb. 20, 1929. The couple lived on a farm near Gresham until they retired to Stromsburg in 1982. His wife died on Sept. 24, 1989.
He was a member of the Wayland Congregational Church and then became a member of the Stromsburg United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Stromsburg Masonic Lodge 129, where he earned the Jordan Medal, which goes to the longest continuous member in the lodge. He was also a member of Scottish Rites and the Shriners.
Survivors include one daughter, Judith (Mrs. Doug) Colberg of Seward; two grandsons; and one great-grandson.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Bond; and one sister, Ruth Allison.
