Esther Markvicka
Omaha -- Esther O. Markvicka, 79, of Omaha, formerly of Osceola, died Thursday, April 9, 1998, at Bergen Mercy Hospital in Omaha.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Vincent's Catholic Church in Osceola. Burial will be in the Osceola Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until after the rosary at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Kepner-Roberts Funeral Home in Osceola.
Mrs. Markvicka was born on June 1, 1918, at Farwell to Christ and Petra (Petersen) Miller. She attended Midland College, graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and received her master's degree from UNL.
She was married
to Leonard Markvicka on June 3, 1946, at Farwell. She was a longtime sixth-grade teacher and elementary principal in Osceola.
She was a member of St. Vincent's Catholic Church.
She is survived by one sister, Mildred (Mrs. Raymond) Miller of Aurora.
She was preceded in death by her husband, five brothers and one sister.
Howard Allen
WOLBACH -- Howard E. Allen, 70, of Wolbach died Thursday, April 9, 1998, at St. Francis Skilled Care Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Church of the Visitation in O'Connor. The Rev. Robert Chamberlain will officiate. Burial will be in Hillside cemetery at Wolbach.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m., Sunday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the Selma B. Allen Scholarship Fund for Wolbach.
Glenn Allington
FULLERTON -- Glenn Allington, 94, of Fullerton died Wednesday, April 8, 1998, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton. The Rev. Mary McQueen will officiate. Burial will be in the Fullerton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mr. Allington was born on Dec. 17, 1903, at Carson City, Iowa, to William and Jennie (Fisher) Allington. At an early age, he moved with his parents to a farm in Jewel County, Kan. He attended grade school in Jewel County and graduated from high school at North Branch, Kan., in 1922.
He married
Bessie Francis on Aug. 12, 1925, at Burr Oak, Kan. They moved to Nebraska in 1927 and farmed south of Fullerton until retiring and moving to Fullerton in 1986.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church. He enjoyed sports and camping.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Bill of Crofton and Richard of Fullerton; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Orville of Caldwell, Idaho; and two sisters, Ruby Ostrander of Tacoma, Wash., and Irene Porter of Caldwell, Idaho.
He was preceded in death by one grandson; three brothers, Clyde, Guy and Cecil; and three sisters, Pearl Gibson, Mildred Sharman and Lela Swanson.
Jana Fisher
WOOD RIVER -- Jana Lynn Fisher, 41, of Wood River died Wednesday, April 8, 1998, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Wood River.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wood River Cemetery. The Rev. Steven Heinsen will officiate.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Fisher was born on March 31, 1957, in Grand Island to Eldon and Evelyn (Mangelsen) Cornelius. She grew up in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1975.
She married
Zane Fisher on Dec. 31, 1976, in Grand Island. She worked for Lingeman Trophy Co. in Grand Island and Leon Plastics in Alda. She also worked at the Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Wood River until illness wouldn't allow her to continue.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Wood River. She enjoyed cross stitching, cooking, fishing and camping.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Tyler and Ryan Fisher, both of Wood River; a daughter, Holly of Chadron; one grandchild; and one brother, Jim Cornelius of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Sadie McAtee
HASTINGS -- Sadie McAtee, 98, of Hastings died Tuesday, April 7, 1998, at her home.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Parkview cemetery in Hastings. The Rev. Jim Miller will officiate.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at Brand-Wilson Mortuary in Hastings.
Mrs. McAtee was born on March 19, 1900, on a farm northeast of Minden to Christian and Emma (Pinn) Schneider.
She married
Harold F. McAtee on July 22, 1924, in Hastings. She and her husband owned and operated the Save-A-Dime Store in Hastings for 28 years. Mr. McAtee died on March 10, 1982.
Survivors include two daughters, LaVone (Mrs. William) Warren of Hastings and Retta (Mrs. Merrill) Andrews of Grand Island; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Ruth McKenney
PALMER -- Ruth McKenney, 99, of Palmer died Wednesday, April 8, 1998, at Community Care of America in Palmer.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Palmer Funeral Home. The Rev. Terry Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
She was born on Nov. 6, 1898, on a farm near Malcom to William and Ellen McKenney. The family moved to a farm northwest of Palmer in 1900 and moved into Palmer in 1910. She attended District 36 School until 1910, then attended the Palmer School through the 11th grade. She graduated from 12th grade at Central City. She graduated from the University of Nebraska teachers college in 1921.
She taught primary grades for 10 years, then spent two years in Bible college in Springfield, Mo., followed by nine years in home missions work in the Kentucky mountains. She was ordained as a minister in 1946 while in Kentucky.
She returned to Nebraska in 1947 and went to Wilmington, Calif., in 1948 to teach at Wilmington Christian School. She taught numerous subjects with a biblical foundation.
She retired in 1962 and returned to Palmer to live with and care for her mother and her aunt. She had lived at the Lebensraum Retirement Home in Grand Island since 1990. She returned to live at Community Care of America in Palmer last week.
She was a member of Calvary Assembly of God Church.
She was preceded in death by a brother and sister.
Verna McTavish
WOOD RIVER -- Verna F. McTavish, 72, of Wood River died Tuesday, April 7, 1998, at Woodbine, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Larry Nothstine will officiate. Burial will be in the Wood River Cemetery.
Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association or the Wood River Rescue Unit.
Mrs. McTavish was born on Feb. 4, 1926, on the family farm near North Loup to Carl and Ina (Noyes) Desel. She graduated from North Loup High School in 1944.
She married
Dale McTavish on Sept. 10, 1950, at Grand Island. The couple farmed near Wood River until Mr. McTavish's death in 1989. Mrs. McTavish was a homemaker and also worked at Miller and Paine and Dillard's in Grand Island. She enjoyed sewing, dancing and golf.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion Auxiliary and the Wood River Country Club.
Survivors include one son, Charles of Wood River; five daughters, Marlene (Mrs. Tim) Callen of Penn Grove, Calif., Lynn (Mrs. Mark) Clark of Woodbine, Iowa, Sherrie Rathman of Wood River, Laurie (Mrs. Tom) Bottum of Omaha and Melanie (Mrs. Lyle) Busboom of Hastings; 18 grandchildren; two sisters, Donna Desel and LaVonne Shipman, both of Grand Island; and one brother, Maynard Desel of Wood River.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson.
