Chad Miller
GLENVIL -- Chad Allen Miller, 20, of Glenvil died Sunday, April 5, 1998, in a car/train collision near Hastings.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Glenvil with the Rev. Tim Wiggins officiating. Burial will be in the Glenvil Cemetery.
Brand-Wilson Mortuary of Hastings is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the DARE program or the donor's choice.
Mr. Miller was born on Aug. 9, 1977, in Oxford to Jerry and Katherine (Rask) Chamberlain. He had lived in Glenvil since 1989. He attended Sandy Creek High School, where he participated in wrestling and band.
Survivors include his parents, of Glenvil; one sister, Tasha Miller of Grand Island; two brothers, Scott Miller of Oxford and Mike Follett of Columbus; and his grandparents, Milton and Rosella Rask of Minden; Jarvis and Maxine Miller of Oxford; and John and Doris Chamberlain of Colorado Springs, Colo.
Martha Retzlaff
ARCHER -- Martha M. Retzlaff, 100, of Archer died Monday, April 6, 1998, at Community Care of America in Central City.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Archer Zion United Methodist Church. The Rev. Barb Hart will officiate. Burial will be in the Archer Zion Cemetery.
There will be no visitation. Solt Funeral Home of Central City is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
She was born on Oct. 22, 1897, in Archer to August and Bertha (Rudolf) Retzlaff. She grew up on a farm near Archer and moved into town when she was a teen-ager.
She lived with her parents until they died. She taught Sunday school and was the Sunday school superintendent for the Evangelical United Brethern Church west of Archer.
She worked as a telephone operator in Archer. She also worked as a kitchen helper at the Night and Day, Black Cat and Central Cafe, all in Central City. She retired in the early 1970s. She moved to Merrick Manor in 1993 and to Community Care in 1994.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Henry, William, Charlie and George Retzlaff; and four sisters, Mary, Minnie and Anna Wegner and Lydia Bonness.
Gladys Sinner
LOUP CITY -- Gladys G. Sinner, 92, of Loup City died Sunday, April 5, 1998, at the Rose Lane Home in Loup City.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Loup City. The Rev. Lawrence Garland will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery at Loup City.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Peters Funeral Home in Loup City.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the Rose Lane Home.
Mrs. Sinner was born on June 14, 1905, on a farm southeast of Arcadia to Bert F. and Nora (Fowler) Tiffany. She attended Mixed Grove Country School near Arcadia.
She married
Harold E. Sinner on Oct. 1, 1925, at her parents' home near Arcadia.
The couple farmed in the Mixed Grove and Sweetwater areas until 1945, when they moved to Malvern, Iowa. The couple farmed until 1966, when they retired and moved into Malvern. Mrs. Sinner took care of elderly people and worked at the Malvern Public Library.
They moved to Loup City in 1972. Mr. Sinner died on April 1, 1977, and Mrs. Sinner continued to live in her home until October 1995, when she entered the Rose Lane Home.
She enjoyed crocheting and tatting. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and a former member of the Mixed Grove Ladies Aid.
Survivors include one son, Norman Sinner of Glenwood, Iowa; three daughters, Gazel Psota of Loup City, Delores (Mrs. Darrel) Hansen of Conroe, Texas, and Joyce McRae of Gretna; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Darwin Sinner; one sister, Hazel Olsen; and two brothers, Cyrus and Clifford Tiffany.
Stacia Spilinek
St. Paul -- Stacia A. Spilinek, 95, formerly of Elba, died Monday, April 6, 1998, at the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Melanie Adams will officiate. Burial will be in the Elba Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Spilinek was born on Sept. 13, 1902, in Howard County northwest of Midway Corner to Joseph and Anna Hosek Matousek. She grew up on a farm and attended Canada Hill Country School north of Midway Corner. She helped on the farm.
She married
Louis Spilinek on May 1, 1923, at St. Paul. The couple lived on a farm east of Elba. They farmed until 1952, when they moved into Elba. Mr. Spilinek died on June 16, 1984. Mrs. Spilinek continued to live in Elba until September 1993, when she moved into Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.
She enjoyed gardening, bingo and playing cards.
Survivors include two son, Leonard of Elba and Robert of Erickson.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter; one grandson; five brothers, Tom, Antone, Edward, Jim and Albert Matousek; and one sister, Jennie Jares.
Dick Ligenza
BELLWOOD -- Dick Ligenza, 54, of Bellwood died Sunday, April 5, 1998, at Columbus Community Hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus. The Rev. Chris Grimmond will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph's cemetery at Bellwood.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Ligenza was born on June 18, 1943, at Columbus to Leonard and Mary (Matya) Legenza. He attended Columbus schools.
He married
Jean Bray on Oct. 24, 1986, in David City. He lived at rural Bellwood and worked as a mechanic.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jason Ligenza of Grand Island and Todd Ligenza of Columbus; two grandsons; his mother, of Columbus; and one sister, Jane (Mrs. Harry) Prososki of Duncan.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Roma Gruhn
DENVER -- Roma J. Anderson Gruhn, 88, of Denver, formerly of Grand Island, died March 20, 1998, at her son's home in Denver.
There were no services. Mrs. Gruhn was cremated.
Mrs. Gruhn was born on Jan. 26, 1910, in Norfolk to Ted and Estes Martin.
She married
Raymond Anderson in 1933.
She married
Walter Gruhn in 1951.
She worked at Yost Lumber Co., a building and loan establishment and the Yancey Hotel.
Survivors include one son, Jim T. Anderson of Denver; a stepson, Jerry Gruhn of Anaheim, Calif.; and numerous grandchildren.
Glenn Kostman
GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Glenn A. Kostman, 59, of Glendale, Ariz., formerly of Wood River, died March 31, 1998, at John C. Lincoln Hospital in Phoenix.
Services were on Friday at the Phoenix Mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Kostman was born on March 30, 1939, at Big Springs to Malvin and Lucille (Johnson) Kostman. He attended grade school in Kansas and graduated from Wood River High School in 1958.
He served in the U.S. Army Reserve.
He married
Sharon Kay Dobberstein on Aug. 21, 1960. They farmed north of Gibbon for 15 years. He then went to work at New Holland in Grand Island.
He married
Barbara Haynes Woitaszewski on Jan. 22, 1983. They moved to Glendale, Ariz., where he did lawn work and was maintenance supervisor for Childtime Preschools.
Mr. Kostman enjoyed black powder guns and camping.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Barbara J. Johnson of Wood River; two sons, John Kostman of Marysville, Wash., and Steve Kostman of Wood River; five grandchildren; two step grandchildren; his mother, Lucille Kostman Miller of North Platte; two brothers, Ray Kostman of Hershey and Paul Kostman of Bayard; and two sisters, Donna Pichler of Norfolk and Kara Westphal of York.
He was preceded in death by his father.
