Lavern Gulbrandson
STROMSBURG -- Lavern V. Gulbrandson, 47, of Stromsburg died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, from injuries suffered in a car accident east of Shelby.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Stromsburg. The Rev. Jeffery Thurman will officiate. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.
Palmer's Funeral Home in Stromsburg is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Gulbrandson was born on Nov. 8, 1950, at Stromsburg to Virgil and Betty (Church) Gulbrandson. He attended Stromsburg High School.
He worked for Kreis Drywall, Sunflower Beef Packers in York for 13 years and Excel Corp. for 15 years. He was a machine operator for Midland Products at the time of his death.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and going to auctions.
Survivors include one daughter, Amy Kelly of Stromsburg; one son, Chad Gulbrandson of Lincoln; four grandchildren; his father, of Shelby; five brothers, Leland Gulbrandson and Tim Gulbrandson, both of Lincoln, Larry Gulbrandson of Polk, Dudley Gulbrandson of Central City, Ted Gulbrandson of York; and his grandmother, Marie Church of Central City.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
Lawrence Jahn
RAVENNA -- Lawrence L. Jahn, 78, of Ravenna died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ravenna. The Rev. Steven Schlund will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery in Ravenna.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the church.
Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Jahn was born on Feb. 5, 1920, in Buffalo County to Rudolph and Theresia (Mauler) Jahn. He was educated in rural Buffalo County.
He married
Blanche Curry on Feb. 26, 1943, in Kearney. The couple farmed northwest of Pleasanton until 1961, when they moved to Ravenna. They owned and operated Skip's Liquor Store in Ravenna until 1983.
He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church and was a member of the Ravenna Fire Department for 33 years.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Linda Boucher and Janelle Grabowski, both of Ravenna, and Connie Gregory of Elkhorn; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Alda Landrigan of Ravenna.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother.
Blanche Nelson
STROMSBURG -- M. Blanche Nelson, 93, formerly of Polk, died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Chaplain Dick Bauer will officiate. Burial will be in Lindale cemetery near Hordville.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Nelson was born on Feb. 11, 1905, in Wray, Colo., to Charles and Ada (Chamberlin) Shroyer. She attended grade school at Rozet, Wyo., and high school at Fruitland, Idaho. She attended Grand Island Business School.
She married
Robert D. Nelson on Sept. 30, 1924. They moved to Polk, where she owned and operated the Corner Cafe. She also worked at the egg plant in York and the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant. Mr. Nelson died on Jan. 30, 1966.
Mrs. Nelson then attended beauty school in Grand Island and later opened Blanche's Beauty Shop in Polk. She worked as a beautician until retiring at age 82. She moved to Midwest Covenant Home in January.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed crocheting afghans for all her children. She also enjoyed flowers.
Survivors include three sons, R. Dale Nelson of Lincoln, Charles Nelson of Central City and William Nelson of Wahoo; four daughters, Ramona (Mrs. Don) Maw of Giltner, Ada Marie (Mrs. Merton) Springer of Grand Island, Jo Ellen Peters of Lincoln and Karen (Mrs. Milan) Blase of Hampton; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one grandson; three brothers, Joe, Don and Kenneth Shroyer; and three sisters, Elda Love, Gladys Hawke and Wynona Wolfe.
Nellie Rickard
HEREFORD, Ariz. -- Nellie Mae Rickard, 100, of Hereford, Ariz., formerly of Grand Island, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at Hereford.
Services are pending at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Norma Baker
RAVENNA -- Norma J. Baker, 58, of Ravenna died Monday, March 23, 1998, at her home.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna. The Rev. Doug DeNeui will officiate.
Mrs. Baker was born on July 22, 1939, in Boise, Idaho, to Joseph and Doris D. (Davies) Harden. She grew up in Oregon and Colorado. She moved to Ravenna four years ago and worked for the Stockman's Bar.
Survivors include four daughters, Debra Piepho of Brush, Colo., Pamela Robinson and Donna Gebauer, both of Aberdeen, Wash., and Dianna Larsen of Ravenna; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; her mother, of Brush, Colo.; two brothers, Delmer Harden of Sterling, Colo., and Clinton Harden of Brush, Colo.; and two sisters, Martha Wolfe of Greeley, Colo., and Twyla Rosenfield of Brush, Colo.
She was preceded in death by her father and one son.

Mary Hines
BROKEN BOW -- Mary R. Hines, 72, of Broken Bow died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at Jennie Melham Hospital in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Broken Bow. The Rev. Bob Rooney will officiate. Burial will be in the Dale Catholic cemetery near Merna.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a rosary at 6 p.m., Friday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Mrs. Hines was born on June 16, 1925, at Merna to Frank J. and Mary (Teahon) McCarty. She attended St. Mary's Cathedral High School.
She married
Bob Payne.
She later married
Noah Hines. She worked at Northwestern Bell in Grand Island as a telephone operator. She moved from Grand Island to California, where she lived for several years. She moved to Broken Bow in August 1989.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Broken Bow and the Altar Society.
Survivors include three sons, Frederick John Payne of San Francisco, Robert Anthony Payne of Omaha and Patrick James Payne of North Carolina; two daughters, Deborah Payne Vokel of Chico, Calif., and Maria (Mrs. Joe) Gordon of North Carolina; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Bernice McCarty of Anselmo and Pat Chisholm of Broken Bow.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Noah; two brothers, Richard and Francis; and four sisters, Bernadette McCormick, Helen McCarty, Vera Scholz and Shirley McCarty.
