Douglas Bernard
McCOOK -- Douglas A. Bernard, 74, of McCook died Monday, March 23, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in McCook. The Rev. Robert Tucker will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery at McCook.
Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary, Friday at Carpenter Breland Chapel in McCook.
Mr. Bernard was born on March 30, 1923, at Lynch to Ross and Anna (Beyler) Bernard. He graduated from high school at Ponca in 1940 and attended college at Yankton, S.D.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II from 1944 to 1946.
He married
Ursula R. Smith of Hartington on Nov. 25, 1946. He operated a gas station and restaurant in Randolph and a restaurant in Hartington. He managed the Elks Club in McCook from 1959 to 1988.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, McCook Elks Lodge 1434, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, B'Anne (Mrs. Jerry) Zapp of Kearney; two sons, Jeff Bernard of Englewood, Colo., and Tom Bernard of Grand Island; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Fran Bernard and Floyd Bernard.
Shirley Hafer
OHIOWA -- Shirley I. Hafer, 69, of Ohiowa died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, in Geneva.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Ohiowa. The Rev. Bonnie Linton-Hendrick and Kim Dunker will officiate. Burial will be in the Ohiowa Public Cemetery.
Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Friday at Farmer and Son Funeral Home in Geneva.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the Ohiowa Rescue Unit.
Mrs. Hafer was born on March 29, 1928, at Ohiowa to John and Mabel (Horne) Garrison.
Survivors include her husband, Maurice L. Hafer; one son, Galen L. Hafer of Lincoln; one daughter, Kay D. Shenefelt of Grand Island; and four grandchildren.
Diane Vang
LINCOLN -- Diane M. Vang, 61, of Martell, formerly of Fullerton and Wolbach, died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at Lyons.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home. The Rev. Wayne Jarvill will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday and prior to services Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Vang was born on Aug. 21, 1936, at Fullerton to Floyd and Iva (Gruber) Stott. She graduated from Wolbach High School.
Survivors include three sons, William Vang of Oakland, John Vang of Martell and Lonnie Vang of St. Roberts, Mo.; two daughters, Valerie Montoya of Plattsmouth and Carol Busch of Lincoln; 11 grandchildren; and one brother, Daryl Stott of Colorado.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and her parents.
'Kay' Brown
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Helen Kathryn "Kay" Brown, 74, of State College, Pa., formerly of Ord, died March 19, 1998, at her home.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Ord. The Rev. David Stipp will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the Valley County Hospital Foundation.
Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Dean Head
Dean F. Head, 76, of 116 E. Ashton died Monday, March 23, 1998, at Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Messiah Lutheran Church. The Rev. Gretchen Diers and Douglas Stensby will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Friday in the Hooper Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m., Thursday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mr. Head was born on May 15, 1921, at Everett Township in Dodge County to Daniel and Edith (Holbrook) Head. He was educated at District 22 School in Dodge County.
He attended Frye Aircraft School in Omaha. He entered the U.S. Air Force on Dec. 26, 1942, at Fort Crook and was discharged on Feb. 16, 1946, at Camp McCoy, Wis. He worked at a Lockheed aircraft plant in San Diego.
He married
Joan Knoell on Jan. 29, 1947, at Hooper. The couple lived for nine years in Hooper, where he operated a portable mill. He then attended airline school in Kansas City.
He began working for Frontier Air Lines in 1956, and they moved to Riverton, Wyo. They moved to Grand Island in 1959, and he continued working for Frontier Air Lines and as a station agent until retiring in 1984.
He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, the Platt-Duetsche, Saddle Club and American Legion Post 119 in St. Paul. He enjoyed traveling and reading.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Steven R. Head of Manitowoc, Wis., and Ronald D. Head of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one daughter, Deanna J. (Mrs. David) Gaunt of Reno, Nev.; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
Milford Collins
CAIRO -- Milford Bernard Collins, 72, of Cairo, formerly of Fullerton, died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton. The Rev. Mary McQueen will officiate. Burial will be in the Fullerton cemetery with military rites by the American Legion Post of Fullerton.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Collins was born on Dec. 21, 1925, at Fullerton to Bernard and Mary (Swarty) Collins. He grew up in Fullerton and joined the U.S. Navy in 1943.
He served during World War II on the USS PC 795. He was discharged from the Navy in 1946. He then worked for a sand and gravel company before he started farming in 1951.
He married
Dorothy Keller on Dec. 4, 1948, and farmed until he moved to Grand Island in 1963. He worked for Berkley Pump, Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant and Heinzman Engineering in Grand Island before retiring.
Survivors include one daughter, Donna Wagoner of Franklin; one son, David E. Collins of Grand Island; two grandsons; two brothers, Donald Collins of Fullerton and Richard Collins of Marquette; and two sisters, Dorothy McClure of Phoenix and Mildred Lewis of Fullerton.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Kay; and two brothers.
Clara Jones
HORDVILLE -- Clara V. Jones, 99, of Hordville died Monday, March 23, 1998, at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Hordville. The Rev. Darryl Keeney will officiate. Burial will be in the Lindale cemetery near Hordville.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.
Mrs. Jones was born on Oct. 26, 1898, on a farm southeast of Hordville to Peter A. and Mary C. (Benson) Erickson. She attended District 61 School, attended ninth and 10th grades at Hordville High School and 11th grade at Stromsburg High School.
She married
Paul M. Jones on Oct. 30, 1920. They lived on a farm southwest of Hordville. They moved into Hordville in 1936. Mr. Jones died in August 1974.
Mrs. Jones lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and E.N. Parsons, until Mrs. Parsons' death in 1995. Mrs. Jones then moved to Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
She had been an accompanist for numerous singing groups that would travel the area. She was a member of and the pianist for the First Baptist Church in Hordville for more than 50 years and later was the organist into her 80s. In earlier years, she was also a Sunday school teacher and a member of the WMS of the church.
Survivors include one son-in-law, E.N. Parsons of Hordville; one grandson, Ritchie Parsons of Clarks; two great-grandsons; and one brother, Milburn Erickson of Hastings.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Shirley Parsons; two sisters, Myrtle and Lenora Sayles; and three brothers, Lawrence, Virgil and Gilbert Erickson.
