Ivadell Smith
SARGENT -- Ivadell G. Smith, 85, of Sargent died Saturday, March 21, 1998, at Goli Medical Center in Sargent.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Rev. Marty Robbins will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery in Sargent.
Memorials are suggested to the Church of Christ or Goli Medical Center, both of Sargent.
Mrs. Smith was born on Dec. 27, 1912, at Sargent to Merton and Augusta (Kaohn) Wood. She attended school in Sargent and graduated from high school in 1930. She attended Lincoln Business College and taught north of Burwell in 1932 and 1933.
She married
Shelly Lacy on Aug. 4, 1933, and they lived in Sargent. He was electrocuted in an accident on May 1, 1947.
She married
Joseph Smith on Aug. 24, 1951.
She was very active in the Christian Church, now known as the Church of Christ, in Sargent. She sang in the choir and played piano for more than 50 years. She was very active in the community.
Survivors include two daughters, Sharon (Mrs. Don) Slagle of Sargent and Julie (Mrs. George) Shupe of Montrose, Colo.; one stepson, Robert Smith of Maitland, Fla.; four grandsons; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Nora Mitchell of Burwell; and one brother, Harold Wood of Denver.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands; an infant son, Warren Joe Smith; three brothers and three sisters.
Ione Strong
STROMSBURG -- Ione Kathleen Strong, 71, died Monday, March 23, 1998, at her rural Stromsburg home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Stromsburg Baptist Church. The Rev. Duane Tweeten will officiate. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg.
Mrs. Strong was born on Jan. 1, 1927, at Polk to Wilbur and Olga (Jerner) Whitacre. She graduated from Polk High School in 1944.
She married
Kenneth D. Strong of Stromsburg on Sept. 6, 1944, at the Polk Baptist Church. She received her bachelor's degree from Kansas State University in 1949 with a major in education. She worked as a home economics teacher at the Stromsburg Public Schools.
Since 1981, she and her husband had split their time between rural Stromsburg and Delta Junction, Alaska.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Stromsburg, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and was involved in many church organizations and groups.
Survivors include her husband; five sons, John Strong of Fairbanks, Alaska, Tom Strong of Lingle, Wyo., Richard Strong of Stockbridge, Ga., Bob Strong of Lincoln and Allen Strong of Holdrege; two daughters, Ann (Mrs. Don) Hanquist and Susan (Mrs. Richard) Peterson, both of Grand Island; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Dorothy (Mrs. C.C.) Laporte of Hutchinson, Kan., and Irene (Mrs. Ralph) Johnson of Stromsburg.
She was preceded in death by one infant granddaughter and one infant brother, Richard Whitacre.
James Vogt
GOTHENBURG -- James H. Vogt, 74, of Gothenburg, formerly of Cozad, died Monday, March 23, 1998, at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Gothenburg. The Rev. Nels Ritola will officiate. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mr. Vogt was born on Nov. 20, 1923, near Gothenburg to Roy Brestel and Agnes (Miller) Vogt.
He married
Esther Helen Ruby Bratten on Dec. 27, 1944, in Gothenburg. He served in World War II in the U.S. Army. Mr. Vogt was a longtime farmer/rancher northeast of Gothenburg. Mrs. Vogt died on Nov. 21, 1973.
He married
Doris Armagost on Aug. 9, 1975, in Yutan. They moved into Cozad in 1986 and lived there until 1996, when they moved to Kearney for a year before moving to Hilltop Estates in 1997.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and American Legion Post 61.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Sandra (Mrs. Ike) Elwood of Grand Island; one son, Keith Vogt of Cozad; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Henry Vogt; and one sister, Alice Hayes of Gothenburg.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, John.
Nicholas Klein
HASTINGS, Minn. -- Nicholas W. Klein, 20, of Hastings, Minn., died accidentally at his workplace in Morris, Minn., on March 14, 1998.
Services were on Thursday at Our Saviour's Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Rev. Carrie Tokheim officiated. Burial was in Lakeside Cemetery.
Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home of Hastings, Minn., was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Klein was born on Oct. 2, 1977, in Hastings, Minn., to Roger and Susan (Ward) Klein. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1996 and attended Red Wing Vocational-Technical School. He was a welder for Kleespie Tank and Petroleum Co. at the time of his death.
He was an avid outdoorsman, fisherman and motorcyclist and enjoyed classic cars.
Survivors include his parents; one sister, Stacy Klein of Excelsior, Minn.; one brother, Brandon Klein of Hastings; grandparents, Harlen and Darlene Ward of Hastings, Minn., and Dorothy Nielson of Grand Island; and great-grandmother, Philippine King of Richland Center, Wis.
Dalphine Ojendyk
BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Dalphine (Piechota) Ojendyk, 86, of Bellingham, Wash., died Friday, March 20, 1998.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Alphonsus' Church in Seattle.
Mrs. Ojendyk was born on Oct. 4, 1911, in Ashton to Joe and Kate Piechota. She attended St. Francis' Parochial School and graduated from Ashton High School in 1930. She graduated from St. Katherine's Hospital Nursing School in Omaha. She worked at hospitals in Omaha and Loup City.
She married
Arnold "Barney" Ojendyk on Sept. 4, 1937. They lived in Portland, Ore., and Seattle.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Plesha of Canada; a son, Bill Ojendyk of North Carolina; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Emma and Frances.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and one sister.
'Mac' Downey
MASON CITY -- Merrill "Mac" Downey, 58, of Mason City died Sunday, March 22, 1998, from injuries suffered in a car/train accident Sunday morning.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. David Harder will officiate. Burial will be in the Sumner Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Downey was born on Jan. 28, 1940, at Kearney to Gregor Merrill and Lura Lee (Maupin) Downey. He graduated from Eddyville High School in 1958 and attended Kearney State College for two years.
He married
Deanna Kay Petersen on Sept. 10, 1960. They lived on the family ranch 22 miles south of Broken Bow. He ranched until 1984. He then worked as an insurance agent.
Survivors include two sons, Troy Downey of Lincoln and Sean Downey of Grand Rapids, Mich.; two grandchildren; and one brother, Doug Downey of Mountain View, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
