Dorothy Palmer
ALBION -- Dorothy Agnes Palmer, 79, of Albion died Thursday, March 19, 1998, at her daughter's home in Albion following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church in Albion. The Rev. Brian Bergum and intern Annette Minderman will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Albion.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Mrs. Palmer was born on Jan. 30, 1919, at Albion to Frank and Gertrude (Moore) Short. She attended Boone County District 44 School and graduated from Albion High School in 1936.
She married
Guy C. Palmer on Aug. 14, 1937, at Albion. They lived their entire lives in Albion. She worked at Suchanek Cleaners, and later at Schlange Cleaners, for approximately 48 years. She also worked at the Albion Senior Center for a short time. Mr. Palmer died on Jan. 18, 1995.
Mrs. Palmer was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Albion, where she was a member of the Women's Service Group. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Albion Women's Bowling Association. She bowled on various teams for 42 years.
Survivors include two sons, James Palmer of Columbus and Cliff Palmer of Albion; one daughter, Sandy Pickinpaugh of Albion; 11 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one brother, Donnie Short of Fulton, Mo.; and one sister, Elaine (Mrs. Wayne) Schroeder of Watseka, Ill.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy and Frank Short.
Lorraine Wheeler
BELGRADE -- Lorraine Marion (Swanson) Wheeler, 71, of Belgrade died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, at the Boone County Health Center in Albion.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Palmer Funeral Home of Fullerton. The Rev. Richard Whiteing will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in St. Edward.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Wheeler was born on July 7, 1926, to Walter and Lillie (Johnson) Swanson. She was a confirmed member of the Tabor Lutheran Church.
She married
Kenneth L. Albrecht in September 1945.
She married
Ralph Wheeler on Nov. 8, 1974.
She worked as a waitress, a nurse's aide at Norfolk State Hospital, in an airplane factory and as a housewife.
She was a member of the Belgrade Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include three sons, Jerry Albrecht of Port Orchard, Wash., Jim Albrecht of Topeka, Kan., and Don Albrecht of Midland, Texas; three daughters, Connie (Mrs. Tom) Petersen of Bloomfield, Pam (Mrs. Ken) Smith of Omaha and Sandy (Mrs. Jim) Sack of Fullerton; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by one sister, Deloris Ross.
Margaret Arehart
HOLDREGE -- Margaret V. Arehart, 78, of Holdrege died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Holdrege. The Rev. Kevin Lund will officiate. Burial will be in Prairie Home cemetery in Holdrege.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Nelson-Harris Funeral Home in Holdrege.
Mrs. Arehart was born on Feb. 3, 1920, in the Bainbridge community of Harlan County to Frank and Rosa (Schroeder) McConnell. She attended Ragan Public School and graduated from Huntley High School in 1937.
She married
Harley Arehart of Ragan on Dec. 16, 1939. They farmed in Harlan County before moving to a farm south of Bertrand in 1945. They moved to Holdrege after their retirement in 1976. Her husband died in 1985.
She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Holdrege.
Survivors include two sons, Gary Arehart of Loomis and Jerald Arehart of Wichita, Kan.; two daughters, Beverly (Mrs. Douglas) Renken of Omaha and Barbara (Mrs. Tom) Garrison of Grand Island; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Garold McConnell of Whitefish, Mont., Keith McConnell of Kearney and Kenneth McConnell of Phillipsburg, Kan.; and one sister, Zella (Mrs. Harvey) Richman of Alma.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by one grandson in infancy.
Leo Doud
DUNNING -- Leo Patrick Doud, 86, of Dunning died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, at Jennie Melham Hospital in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the United Church of Christ in Dunning. The Rev. David Hansen will officiate. Burial will be in the Dunning Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the donor's choice.
Mr. Doud was born on Feb. 26, 1912, in Fillmore County to Ed and Annie M. (Clawson) Doud. He graduated from Dunning High School in 1931.
He worked for Shinn Turkeys, Langer Gravel Co. of Gibbon and the Riggs Tavern from 1939 to 1942. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from March 1942 to December 1945. After the service, he worked at the Riggs Elevator for several years until it was sold to Bar Z Ranch. He then worked for Gage Lumber Co. until retiring in 1976.
He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Dunning and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include one niece and five nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Harley, Lewis and Francis; and one sister, Martha Riggs.rs, Harley, Lewis and Francis; and one sister, Martha Riggs.
Janet Murphy
CRAWFORD -- Janet I. (Karre) Murphy, 50, of Crawford died Tuesday, March 17, 1998, at Crawford.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Crawford. The Rev. Todd Philipsen will officiate.
Family services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Resurrection Catholic Church in Grand Island.
Memorials are suggested to the Janet and John Murphy Scholarship Fund at Chadron State College.
Houston-Hartman-Chamberlain Chapel in Crawford is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Murphy was born on Nov. 16, 1947, on the family farm near Scotia to Horace and Monica (Smyth) Karre. She graduated from North Loup-Scotia High School in 1966 and received a bachelor of arts degree in speech education from Kearney State College in 1970.
She married
John Murphy of Wolbach in 1970. She received a master of science in English from Kearney State College in 1972 and taught at Gibbon High School from 1970 to 1974. She taught at Shelton High School from 1974 to 1980, when she was hired at Chadron State College. After directing a number of programs in student services, she became assistant professor of education. She worked there until her death.
She received an Ed.S. in administration from Chadron State College in 1995 and a doctor of education degree in administration, curriculum and instruction from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1996.
She chaired a number of college committees, presented her research findings at national conferences, served as a field reader for the U.S. Department of Education, was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and Delta Kappa Gamma and wrote proposals for grants. She was also active on the Crawford public schools, Post Playhouse and Legend Buttes Health Services boards.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Ryann (Mrs. Stacy) Uden of Chicago; a son, John, a student at UNL; her mother, Monica Karre of Grand Island; four sisters, Nancy Donovan of Greeley, Donna Wardyn of Loup City, Margaret Peters of Grand Island and Mary Hoffman of Giltner; and three brothers, David Karre and Ted Karre, both of Lincoln, and Daniel Karre of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Fredrick.
Leona Rockford
Leona O. Rockford, 92, of Grand Island died Tuesday, March 17, 1998, at St. Francis Skilled Care Unit.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Gollaher Chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. George Wheat will officiate. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the O'Neill cemetery with the Rev. Philip Morrison-Sloat officiating.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday at Kleine Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Rockford was born on Aug. 1, 1905, at Pierce to Charles and Ida Mae (Harding) Gilman. She grew up in the Pierce and Norfolk area.
She married
William A. Rockford on Dec. 26, 1922, at Pierce. They lived in Pierce and then farmed at Brunswick before moving to Stuart and O'Neill. She moved to Grand Island in 1953. She worked as a baby sitter and as a cook in a restaurant. She was also a seamstress and made quilts.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She enjoyed bingo, dancing and canning foods.
Survivors include seven sons, Dale of Livingston, Texas, Alfred of Michigan, Warren of Medesto, Calif., Merwin of El Cajon, Calif., Jim of Arizona and Robert and Chester, both of Grand Island; three daughters, Elsie Walton of O'Neill, Margie (Mrs. Ed) Gamel of Corning, Calif., and Alice "Sue" Middagh of Norfolk; 36 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Frank Gilman of Fremont.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, William and Benny; three brothers, John, Jim and Bob; and four sisters, Pearl, Mable, Rosie and Lottie.
