Alberta McBride
BELGRADE -- Alberta McBride, 60, of Belgrade died Saturday, March 14, 1998, at Lincoln General Hospital from injuries she suffered in a March 5 accident near Cedar Rapids.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids with the Rev. Urban Schmitt officiating. Burial will be in the Main cemetery in Belgrade.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday at Levander Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids with a 3 p.m. rosary. Visitation continues after 7 p.m. Monday at the church with a 7:30 p.m. wake service. Visitation will be from 8 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. McBride was born on Oct. 18, 1937, at Cedar Rapids to Albert and Margaret (Paalman) Franzen. She was baptized on March 27, 1938, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, attended Cedar Rapids Elementary School and graduated from Cedar Rapids High School in 1955.
She married
William McBride on Oct. 19, 1956, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. They lived on the McBride homestead three and a half miles north of Belgrade. She worked at banks in Spalding and Fullerton. She worked at both the Nance County and Boone County Courthouse. She also operated "Bert's Shirts" sweatshirt business from her home. Her husband died in 1979.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church from 1937 to 1994 and a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church since Aug. 12, 1995. She was a member of the Boone County Genealogical Society, Cedar Rapids Alumni Association, St. Anthony's Altar Society, lifetime member of Belgrade American Legion Auxiliary, Cedar Rapids band and the Friends and Neighbors Club.
Survivors include one son, Robert of Belgrade; two daughters, Beverly Ann (Mrs. Tom) Schuele of Cedar Rapids and Barbara (Mrs. Chris) Gemma of Littleton, Colo.; three grandchildren; one sister, Lenore (Mrs. Ed) Honke of Omaha.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
James Moon
RAVENNA -- James H. Moon, 78, of Ravenna died Saturday, March 14, 1998, at Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ravenna with the Rev. Steven Schlund officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn cemetery in Grand Island.
Visitation will be prior to services at the church.
Rasmussen Funeral Home of Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.
Lillian Petersen
ST. PAUL -- Lillian L. Petersen, 92, of St. Paul died Sunday, March 15, 1998, at Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in St. Paul with the Rev. Larry Lepper officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery in St. Paul.
Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church.
Jacobsen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Michael Novicki
COLUMBUS -- Michael C. Novicki, 86, of Columbus died Saturday, March 14, 1998, at Columbus Manor.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus with the Rev. Chris Grimmond officiating. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure cemetery in Columbus.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus. Visitation will continue after 6 p.m. Tuesday at the church with a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church.
Mr. Novicki was born on Sept. 4, 1911, at Columbus to Gregory and Mary (Chmura) Novicki. He graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus in 1930.
He married
Evelyn Staub on Aug. 17, 1937, in Columbus. He lived in Burwell, North Platte and Lexington before returning to Columbus in 1942, where he has lived since. He worked many years with Consumers Powers, retiring from Loup Power in 1976.
He was active in the Columbus Fire Department. He joined the Pioneer Hook & Ladder Co. on June 15, 1942. He served as fire chief from 1952 to 1956. He was elected department president in 1960. He started the Columbus Junior Fire Patrol in 1950, the first junior patrol in the United States. He received the Award of Merit from the Nebraska Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben for his work in fire prevention in 1960. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed turkey hunting.
He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Holy Name and the Columbus Fire Department. He was a former president and member of the Columbus City Council.
Survivors include two sons, Joe of Fullerton and Dennis of Green Bay, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife and one son, Ron Novicki.
Alberta McBride

Patricia Potter-Schafer
PHILLIPS -- Patricia Potter-Schafer, 55, of Phillips, died Friday, March 13, 1998, at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Elder Tim Schrunk will officiate. Burial will be in Phillips Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Potter-Schafer was born Feb. 25, 1943, to Joseph "Pete" and Grace (Mongenegil) Potter in Maquoketa, Iowa. She grew up in Maquoketa and attended school there. She lived in Oklahoma for 16 years before moving to Grand Island in 1979.
She married
Matt Schafer on Oct. 6, 1990, in Grand Island. She worked as a certified nursing assistant with handicapped children for 36 years.
She was a member of Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and T.O.P.S. Club. She was formerly involved with Brownies and Girl Scouts.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Candie Flores of Grand Island; two stepchildren, Staci and Chad Schafer of Denver; one brother, Paul Potter of Maquoketa, Iowa and one sister, Jane (Mrs. Owen) Wagener of Maquoketa.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three sons.
Emma Vodehnal
BURWELL -- Emma K. Vodehnal, 88, of Burwell died Friday, March 13, 1998, at Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church in Burwell with the Rev. Rolly Salts officiating. Burial will be in Cottonwood cemetery in Burwell.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
Memorials are suggested to Community Memorial Health Center or the Burwell Ambulance Supply Fund.
Mrs. Vodehnal was born on July 18, 1909, southwest of Elyria in Valley County to Louis and Bessie (Klat) Vancura Sr.
She married
Edwin A. Vodehnal on April 19, 1932, in Ord. They farmed in Valley County and then moved to a farm in Garfield County east of Burwell along the North Loup River in 1947.
She enjoyed the farm, milking cows, flowers, cooking, baking, gardening and raising chickens. In her later years, she began crocheting afghans. She belonged to a card club and the Mary Matrons Extension Club.
Survivors include three sons, Marvin and Ronald of Burwell and Robert of Schuyler; one brother, William Vancura of Ord; one sister, Wilma (Mrs. Sylvester) Micek of Ord; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Louis Vodehnal Jr.; and one sister, Bessie Janicek.
Leon Camp
GIBBON -- Leon J. Camp, 90, of Gibbon died Wednesday, March 11, 1998, at the Good Samaritan Center in Gibbon.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Gibbon Baptist Church. The Rev. Robert Flynn will officiate. Burial will follow in the Gibbon Riverside Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon.
Memorials are suggested to the church, the Gideons or the Gibbon Emergency Unit.
Mr. Camp was born on Sept. 9, 1907, in Hampton to Lewis and Minnie (Hutsell) Camp. When he was 11 years old, he and his family moved to Gibbon. He graduated from Gibbon High School in 1926.
He worked in construction with his brothers until he was 37, when he started farming north of Gibbon.
He married
Edna Sullivan on Dec. 24, 1934, in Colorado. They lived in Gibbon. He farmed until retiring in 1974.
He was a member of the Gibbon Baptist Church, the Odd Fellows Lodge in Gibbon, the Gideons and the Gibbon cemetery Board. He had served on the Gibbon school board for several years.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Leon Raymond of Cary, N.C., and Warren of Bloomington, Minn.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Ben of Wood River.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and five sisters.
