John Flanagan
ALBION -- John LeRoy Flanagan, 79, of Albion died Monday, March 9, 1998, at the Boone County Health Center in Albion.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Michaelis Catholic Church in Albion. The Rev. Will Spenner will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 162 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 736.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. wake service, Thursday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Mr. Flanagan was born on May 3, 1918, on a farm south of Albion to John Edward and Ruby (Standerwick) Flanagan. He graduated from Albion High School in 1936 and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He moved to California.
He was inducted into the U.S. Army on June 23, 1942, and was honorably discharged on Oct. 1, 1945. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the Philippines Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star.
He married
Peg Jean Morrison on Aug. 16, 1942, at Los Angeles. They lived at Long Beach, Calif., where he managed a chain of Iowa Pork Shops grocery stores. They lived in Garden Grove, Calif., from 1956 to 1961, when they moved to the Albion area. Mr. Flanagan farmed and did custom hay grinding until retiring in 1984. They moved into Albion in June 1986. Mrs. Flanagan died on Dec. 30, 1995.
Mr. Flanagan was a member of St. Michaelis Catholic Church in Albion, the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, VFW and Boone County Senior Center. He was a member and past president of the Albion Country Club and served on the natural resources district board in Knox County.
Survivors include his daughter, Sherry Packard of Albion; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and four brothers, Bill of Kona, Hawaii, Bob of Florence, Ariz., Tom of Cozad and Mike of Albion.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Mike; a brother, Ray; and a sister, Rosemary.
John Yelkin
AUBURN -- John Henry Yelkin, 89, of Auburn died March 4, 1998, at the Nemaha County Hospital.
Services were on Saturday at St. Paulis Lutheran Church in Auburn. The Rev. James Miller officiated. Burial was in Sheridan cemetery at Auburn.
Mr. Yelkin was born on Nov. 19, 1908, at Blue Hill to Frank and Anna (Cords) Yelkin. As a child, he moved with his parents to rural Johnson. He was educated at a rural school near his home.
He married
Irene J. Kehr on Feb. 5, 1930, at St. Paulis Lutheran Church in Auburn. They farmed near Howe. They moved to Auburn 60 years ago. Mr. Yelkin worked for the Auburn Machine Works for more than 30 years. His wife died on May 4, 1985.
He was a member of St. Paulis Lutheran Church in Auburn. He enjoyed fishing and woodworking.
Survivors include two sons, Richard Yelkin of Loup City and Robert Yelkin of Auburn; one daughter, Janet (Mrs. Stan) Knippelmier of Johnson; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marie Kehr of Auburn and Vi Yelkin of Haywood, Calif.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
Carol Ferguson
LAHABRA, Calif. -- Carol Mae Ferguson, 65, of LaHabra, Calif., died Feb. 28, 1998, at Family Hills Regional Center in LaHabra.
Services were at Sky Rose Chapel in Whittier, Calif. Burial was in the Whittier Cemetery.
Mrs. Ferguson was born on June 17, 1932, on the family farm south of Greeley to Walter and Goldie (Bradley) Thompson. She was educated at District 24 School in Greeley County graduated from Scotia High School in 1949. She then worked for five years at the State Capitol in Lincoln.
She married
Allen Ferguson in October 1955 in Las Vegas. She lived in the Whittier and LaHabra area of California. She retired six years ago after more than 35 years with Standard Oil Co. and subsidiary companies.
She had done volunteer work and had traveled extensively.
Survivors include a son, Alan of San Francisco; a daughter, Jeannie (Mrs. Chuck) Pitts of Fullerton, Calif.; a grandson; three brothers, Floyd Thompson and Don Thompson, both of North Loup, and Dale Thompson of Larned, Kan.; and four sisters, Bernice Mitchell of Morrill, Avis Zaucha of Greeley, Cora Alice Watts of Bakersfield, Calif., and Betty Barber of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Kenneth Thompson.
Carolyn Jackson
NORTHBORO, Iowa - Carolyn Kay Jackson, 48, of rural Northboro, Iowa, died Sunday, March 8, 1998, at her home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah, Iowa.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hackett Funeral Home in Shenandoah, Iowa.
A memorial has been established.
Mrs. Jackson was born on March 15, 1949, at Central City to Lawrence and Wilma (Larsen) Barnes. She moved to Northboro as a child and lived in that area all her life. She graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1967.
She married
Gary Jackson on Dec. 27, 1968, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Shenandoah. She graduated from Clarkson School of Nursing in Omaha in 1970. She worked at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, Iowa, for a few years and later worked for Dr. J.G. Schaff in Shenandoah for more than 18 years. She had been care planning coordinator for Garden View Center in Shenandoah for eight years.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the State Line Club. She loved flowers and golf.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Kristin (Mrs. Rod) McEnaney of Tarkio, Mo., and Deanna (Mrs. David) Anderson of Farragut, Iowa; three grandchildren; her mother, Wilma (Mrs. Lefty) Thompson of Wolbach; a sister, Laura (Mrs. Frank) Doherty of Hyannis, Mass; and a brother, Darwin Barnes of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Irene Koehler
Irene A. Koehler, 95, of Grand Island died Sunday, March 8, 1998, at her home.
Services are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
"Heinie" Kutschkau
Wilbur "Heinie" V. Kutschkau, 82, of Grand Island died Saturday, March 7, 1998, at his home.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Denton Jantzi will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Hospice, St. Jude's Children's Hospital or the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Mr. Kutschkau was born Aug. 24, 1915, in Hamilton County. He grew up in the Phillips area and graduated from Phillips High School in 1933.
He married
Ione M. Hanover in 1943 in Grand Island. Mrs. Kutschkau died on Feb. 13, 1964.
Mr. Kutschkau worked for the U.S. Postal Service until he was drafted in the U.S. Army in 1941. He served in the army until 1945.
Following his military service, he returned to Grand Island and did carpentry work and auto body repair until 1948, when he returned to the postal service. He retired from the postal service in 1973.
He was a member of the Eagles, VFW and the Platt-Duetsche.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and horse racing.
Survivors include one son, David of Grand Island; two daughters, Wanda Runge of Grand Island and Karen Wetzel of Albany, Ore.; two brothers, Orvis of Washington and Melvin of Fullerton; two sisters, Eloise Sherry of Grand Island and Betty Vlasek of Lincoln; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leroy and Donald.
Ralph Nielsen
Ralph F. Nielsen, 79, of Grand Island died Saturday, March 7, 1998, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Lutheran Church. The Rev. Dennis Reich will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The family will greet friends from 6 to 7 p.m.
