Dr. Harold Janzen
Dr. Harold "Hal" Janzen, 78, of 4327 Cambridge Road, a longtime Grand Island dentist, died Thursday, March 5, 1998, at St. Francis Skilled Care Unit.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Kleine Funeral Home. The Rev. Denton R. Jantzi will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Fremont Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Maybelle Campbell
KEARNEY -- Maybelle L. Campbell, 84, of Kearney died Thursday, March 5, 1998, at her home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Christian Church in Kearney. The Rev. Don Bryant will officiate. Burial will be in the Kearney Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary in Kearney and before services Monday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Campbell was born on Dec. 25, 1913, in Hildreth to Bernard A. and Olivia (Hagerstrom) Peterson. At an early age, she moved with her family to a farm south of Wilcox. She attended a country school and graduated from Hildreth High School in 1933. She attended Kearney State College and taught for several years at country schools in Franklin, Kearney and Buffalo counties.
She married
Bernard Campbell in August 1941, and they lived in Kearney. She retired from the Buffalo County clerk's office in 1975.
She was a member of the First Christian Church and the church circle.
Survivors include two sons, Steve Campbell of Wichita, Kan., and Terry Campbell of Chapman; one grandson; and two brothers, Virgil Peterson of Wichita, Kan., and Kenneth Peterson of Cheyenne, Wyo.
Her husband died in 1988. She also was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Genevieve Darling
ALBION -- Genevieve Muriel Darling, 85, of Albion died Wednesday, March 4, 1998, at Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Loretto. The Rev. Eric Biehl will officiate. Burial will be in the Main cemetery at Belgrade.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Mrs. Darling was born on Oct. 7, 1912, in Belgrade to John Edward and Edith Maneta (Wilkinson) Nelson. She attended Nance County District 14 School and Belgrade High School.
She married
John Henry Darling on Feb. 11, 1931, at Grand Island. They lived and farmed near Powell, Wyo., Belgrade, Cedar Rapids, St. Edward, Loretto, Newman Grove and Albion. She was a homemaker and also worked as a waitress.
She was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church and was a member of the Loretto Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She received her 75-year pin and certificate from the Loretto church in April 1996. She was also a member of the Hobby, Home Extension, Sunshine and Birthday clubs and Royal Neighbors Lodge.
Survivors include three sons, Paul of Central City, John Jr. of Albion and Clarence of Casper, Wyo.; two daughters, JoAnn (Mrs. Robert) Klassen of Eagle Bend, Minn., and Genevieve "Susie" (Mrs. Richard) Klassen of Mason City, Ill.; 22 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Edna (Mrs. Stuart) Robinson of Belgrade.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Gerald and Donald; a great-granddaughter; one brother, John Nelson; and two sisters, Edith (Mrs. Arthur) Clayton and Eva (Mrs. Cecil) Hambleton.
Mabel Fries
BROKEN BOW -- Mabel Fries, 97, of Broken Bow died Thursday, March 5, 1998, at Jennie Melham Hospital in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Cliff Reynolds will officiate. Burial will be in the Ansley Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.
Mrs. Fries was born on Jan. 30, 1901, on a homestead near Mason City to George Washington and Mary M. (Hannel) Hammond.
She married
George P. Fries. They lived in Custer County throughout their marriage. Mrs. Fries had worked for her father's blacksmith shop, did baby-sitting for several families and had worked at Coffman Nursing Home. Mr. Fries died on March 25, 1978.
Mrs. Fries was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Dry Valley Ladies Club. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting and baking.
Survivors include one son, Ed Fries of Broken Bow; one daughter, Irene (Mrs. Ervin) Morse of Doniphan; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death one son, Harold Fries; and 11 brothers and sisters.
Gilbert Skow
GIBBON -- Gilbert Skow, 88, of Gibbon died Friday, March 6, 1998, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services are pending with Godberson Mortuary of Gibbon/Shelton.
Goldie B. Uhler
HENDERSON -- Goldie B. Uhler, 83, of Henderson, formerly of Lexington, died Thursday, March 5, 1998.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson, with the Rev. Marsha Yoder-Shrock officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Monday in Fort McPherson National cemetery in Maxwell, with the Rev. Thomas Hyde officiating.
Mrs. Uhler was born on July 1, 1914, in Langham, Canada, to Cornelius and Agnew (Ratzlaff) Beier. She graduated in 1934 from York High School.
She was married
to David Uhler on March 1, 1935, in York. They lived in Lexington until 1946. They moved to Ogallala. They moved to the Hershey area in 1953 and farmed until retirement. Mrs. Uhler moved to Henderson in 1992 to be near her family.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women in Hershey, where she also taught Sunday school.
When her children were young, she was a 4-H leader. After her children were grown, she worked for 11 years as a seamstress for Luedke and Smith Cleaners in North Platte.
Survivors include a son, William Uhler of Central City; a daughter, Mary Jane Fosdick of Holister, Calif.; six grandchildren; two sisters and one brother.
She was preceded in death by her husband and one sister.
Jerald Critel
DENTON -- Jerald L. Critel, 44, of rural Denton, formerly of Grand Island, died Monday, March 2, 1998.
Private family services were held. Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Critel attained a professional engineer's license and worked for the Nebraska Department of Roads for 20 years.
Survivors include his wife, Sally; one son, Alexander Critel; a daughter, Genevieve of Denton; his mother, Dorothy Critel of Lincoln; a sister, Mary Ann Enevoldsen of Grand Island; and two brothers, Jerrold of Beatrice and Elmer of Lincoln.
He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer Critel.
Leona Negley
MOUNT VERNON, Wash. -- Leona Ruth Negley, 84, of Mount Vernon, Wash., died Tuesday, March 3, 1998, at the Josephine Sunset Home in Stanwood, Wash.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Ord. The Rev. Jim B. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Hillside cemetery at North Loup.
Memorials are suggested to the Valley County Hospital and Nursing Home.
Mrs. Negley was born on Aug. 31, 1913, in Ord to Louis A. and Minnie (Albers) Axthelm. She grew up and attended school in the Davis Creek community.
She married
Loyal Negley in 1936 at Kearney. They lived on a farm near Ord and then moved into town.
After her husband died in 1964, she moved to Mount Vernon, Wash., where she worked as a baker at Skagit Valley Hospital until retiring in 1978.
Survivors include two sons, Arden Negley of Mount Vernon, Wash., and Gary Negley of Mill Creek, Wash.; one daughter, Phyllis (Mrs. John) Kasson of St. Paul; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Donald Axthelm of Ord and Mike Axthelm of Mount Vernon, Wash.; and two sisters, Lela Cook of Ord and Opal Hammer of Hastings.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd Axthelm and Dale Axthelm.
