Edgar Erickson, 91
ALLIANCE - Edgar Joseph Erickson, 91, passed away Saturday, May 7, 2016, at Box Butte General Hospital.
He was born Nov. 10, 1924, at Nekoma, North Dakota to Jacob and Agnes (Novacek) Erickson. Edgar enjoyed the pursuits of youth, but matured quickly when in 1943 he enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. In later years he would tell of the devastation he witnessed during his service. He longed for peace, so he could return back home to marry and start a family with his special girl, then Helen Dietz.
Ed returned back to Nekoma, N.D., in 1946 and married Helen on June 1, 1950, in Nekoma. From that point, Ed and Helen moved around a lot with stops in North Dakota, Illinois and Nebraska. Ed’s first job out of the military was as an electrician; he later found a home in Alliance serving the booming railroad industry.
He enjoyed the good things in life: spending time with his growing family, calling bingo for his hometown Catholic Church; outdoor recreation, and visiting with his many friends. He also believed in paying it forward by recycling and volunteering in his community. The devastation of war never left his memory, and he did all he could to provide a better future for his community and family. Ed lived out his retirement years in his Alliance home with his beloved Helen, and received daily visits from daughter, Carol and grandson Keldrin.
Ed was an amazing person, father, and friend and had a shining soul. His energetic, positive attitude toward everything life handed to him was an inspiration to family and friends. His spirit will live on in each and every one of the people he was in contact with. Next time you see geese fly by, go fishing, and hunting or for a walk, think of Edgar.
Ed is survived by his wife, Helen Erickson, his daughter, Carol Krohe of Alliance, his three sons, Gary (Meredith) Erickson of Alliance, Mark Erickson of Keystone, S.D. and Keith (Jamie) Erickson of Moore, Okla., his grandchildren, Kalin Krohe, Keldrin Krohe, Ava Erickson, Brilynn Erickson, Jason Erickson, Ryan Erickson, Crystal Erickson, Shae Erickson, Erik (Erin) Erickson, Murphy Erickson, Justin Erickson and 5 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Pam Erickson, his brother, Jacob (Marie) Erickson, his sister, Margaret (Ray) Heck and his brother-in-law, Dick Kartes.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, May 12, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church with Father John Kakkuzhiyil officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 1-7 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Funeral Home.
