Mildred G. Hansen
d. April 1, 2011
NORFOLK - Mildred G. Hansen, 92, of Norfolk died Friday, April 1, 2011, at the Madison House.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with burial at Prospect Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-7:30 p.m. Monday at Stonacek Funeral Chapel with a 7:30 p.m. rosary. The Rev. Dan Andrews will officiate.
Mildred Gertrude Hansen was born Sept. 3, 1918, at Tilden to Leo and Anna (Schinck) Rutjens. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Tilden. Mildred attended Bunker Hill School, and her last two years of school were at St. Ludger s Academy in Creighton. She graduated in 1935, qualified to teach at the age of 16. Sadly, there were no teaching opportunities for such a young teacher, so she returned home and worked on the family farm.
On April 26, 1938, Mildred married Edwin C. Hansen, a farmer in Tilden. They farmed for several years in the Tilden, Oakdale and Newman Grove area. During this time Mildred was a stay-at-home mom, raising their four children.
In 1960, the family moved to Norfolk. Mildred worked at the Lutheran Community Hospital as a nurse's aide. During this time she also did some in-home nursing.
Later, Mildred joined the staff at the Norfolk Regional Center and was certified as a psychiatric technician 2. She worked in men's admission until she retired in 1984.
After retirement, Mildred kept busy with her family, grandchildren, cards, knitting and crocheting. Her love of gardening made her yard a show piece of beauty. Her quilts were a welcome sight to those who received them. She was a frequent volunteer at the local soup kitchen.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Norfolk.
Survivors include three children, son James and wife Berniece Hansen of Sioux Falls, S.D., daughter Janet and husband Marvin Carl of Manhattan, Kan., son Larry and wife Barbara Hansen of Norfolk; one brother, Leon and wife Henrietta Rutjens of Tilden; sister-in-law Catherine Hansen of Ocala, Fla.; five grandchildren, Margaret, Lynn, Jerry and wife Kristi, Shawn and Beth Ann; eight great-grandchildren, Damien, Danielle, Spencer, Ian, Zach, Erika, Carson, and Maddie; one stepgreat-grandchild, Bridget; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Edwin; daughter Joyce Hansen-Vessels; granddaughter Pamela Kay Hansen-Insinger; three half-brothers, Henry, Anthony and Leonard Zauner; three half-sisters, Sister Margaret Mary, Sister Angela and Eileen and husband Bill Brozek; son-in-law George Vessels; sister-in-law Marge Hansen; brother-in-law Elmer Hansen.
Congregational hymns will be "Amazing Grace," "On Eagles Wings," "How Great Thou Art," "The Last Mile" and "The Prayer to Saint Frances."
Pallbearers will be Lynn Hansen, Jerry Hansen, Shawn Vessels, Margaret Parks, Beth Ann Broderson, Steve Rutjens.
Honorary pallbearers will be Damien Parks, Zach Hansen, Carson Becker, Don Rutjens, Tom Rutjens, Jerry Rutjens, LeRoy Rahade, Wendell Reese, Robert Paulson, John Varner, neices and nephews.

Irenev Williams
d. May 31, 2011
Services for Irene Williams, 84, Norfolk, will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at New England Congregational Church in Stanton. The Rev. Steve Uzzell will officiate. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Norfolk. Lunch will be served after the service, before the interment.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Stonacek Funeral Chapel in Norfolk.
She died Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at Heritage of Bel Air Nursing Home in Norfolk.
Irene Bertha Marie Williams, the daughter of Fred and Bertha (Ketelsen) Rohlfs, was born Sept. 9, 1926, at Bloomfield. Irene moved with her parents to Brunswick, where she attended School District 61. Her family later moved to Creighton, where she graduated from high school in 1943. Irene worked as a waitress for several years at Mary s Caf in Norfolk.
She married Howard Williams on Jan. 3, 1968, in Norfolk. They lived at Alda, where Howard was employed at New Holland Machine Co. In 1985, they retired and moved to Stanton.
Irene was actively involved in activities at the New England Congregational Church. Irene and her husband Howard enjoyed gardening, then canning and freezing their harvests. They spent time together traveling and going fishing. Irene especially enjoyed playing cards. Irene faithfully cared for her husband during his battle with cancer. Irene was very appreciative to her wonderful neighbors who were always there for her. Ray and Carolyn Haddock, Darlene Zoubek and Inez Barth. In April 2011, Irene s health deteriorated and she moved to The Heritage of Bel-Air Nursing Home in Norfolk.
Survivors include many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard on June 15, 2003; her brothers, Edward and Marvin, and a sister, Helen.
Music will be provided by organist Mary Drott. Casket bearers will be Cody Loughrey, Tony Zechmann, Gene Horton, Ronald Pohlman, Bryan Cordner, and George Benson, Jr.

Gladys Hoefener
d. May 22, 2011
Services for Gladys T. Hoefener, 95, of Norfolk will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Stonacek Memorial Chapel in Pierce with burial in Prospect View Cemetery and military rites by American Legion Post 72 and the U.S. Army Honors Guard. Visitation will start at 10 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Mark Rose will officiate.
She died Sunday, May 22, 2011, at Golden Living Center in Norfolk.
She was born April 1, 1916, at Calvin, Ky., to Chesley and Esther (Davis) Thompson. She attended Calvin Public School at Calvin. She had served in the Army during World War II from July 18, 1944, to June 22, 1946, and was a truck driver.
She married Melvin Hoefener Nov. 3, 1964, at Hartington. They lived in Pierce. She moved to Norfolk in 1997. She had been a resident at the Golden Living Center since July of 2008.
She was a member of Victory Road Assembly Of God, Norfolk, and Pierce American Legion.
Survivors include two stepsons, Larry and wife Sue Hoefener of Pierce and Ed and wife Elaine Hoefener of Owatonna, Minn.; one stepdaughter, Julie and husband Ron Eddy of Owasso, Okla.; four step grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by parents, brothers and sisters and husband Melvin on June 4, 1981.
Organist will be Linda Peekenschneider with congregational hymns "Amazing Grace" and "Love Lifted Me."
Casket bearers will be Larry Hoefener, Ed Hoefener, Ron Eddy, Greg Meyer, Jesse Eddy, Paul Bybrk.

Clarence Zautke
d. May 22, 2011
Services for Clarence Zautke, 94, of Pierce will be at St. John' Lutheran Church in Pierce at 10:30 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Keith Christiansen officiating and burial in Prospect View Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Stonacek Memorial Chapel in Pierce.
He died Sunday, May 22, 2011, at Pierce Manor.
Clarence Paul Karl Zautke was born July 31, 1916, in Pierce County to Herman and Marie (Ahlmann) Zautke. He was baptized Sept. 3, 1916, at McLean and confirmed April 13, 1930, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Pierce. He attended eighth grade at St. John's Lutheran School, Pierce.
He was married to Verna Lorine Heckman Sept. 22, 1940, at Pierce. Verna passed away Dec. 13, 1977. He married Violet Bourelle March 23, 1984, at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, Norfolk. Violet passed away April 25, 1995.
After his marriage they farmed north of Pierce. He retired in 1984, when he moved to Norfolk. He had been a resident of Pierce Manor the last four years. He enjoyed playing the accordion, fishing, playing cards, dancing, spending time with his family.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Pierce.
Survivors include three sons, Ronald and wife Polly Zautke of Chandler, Ariz., Gary Zautke of Omaha, Brian and wife Deb Zautke of Pierce; two daughters, Diane and husband Bill Groskopf of Littleton, Colo., Cheryl and husband Dan Carstens of Flagstaff, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Delbert and wife Margaret Zautke of Pierce; one stepson, Gene Bourelle of Norfolk; one stepdaughter, Wanda Henkel of Gering; three stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by parents; both wives, Verna and Violet; one daughter, Sharon in infancy; four brothers, Louie, Erdman, Martin, Leonard; two sisters, Erna Bockelman, Edna Buss Koehler; one stepson, Melvin Bourelle.
Organist will be Jean Zautke with a duet by Rick and Cheryl Higgins.

Barbara J. Papstein
d. May 14, 2011
Services for Barbara J. Papstein, 73, Norfolk, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church with burial in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery and the Rev. Dan Andrews officiating. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Stonacek Funeral Chapel with a 7 p.m. rosary.
She died Saturday, May 14, 2011, at Faith Regional Health Services.
Barbara Jean Papstein was born May 26, 1937, at Omaha to Jack and Martha (Izen) Abboud. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School, Norfolk, and from Norfolk Junior College.
She was married to Warren S. Papstein May 11, 1957, at Sacred Heart parish.
They lived in Norfolk for over 50 years. They were very active with the Mid-States Rodeo Association as a rodeo producer. They owned and operated Norfolk Circle P Leather until 1995. They enjoyed watching wrestling and spending time with family. They enjoyed playing cards and bingo. Barbara worked at the Ranch Cafe, Granary and currently the Country Inn as a hostess and waitress.
She was a member of St. Mary's and Sacred Heart Catholic parish.
Survivors include six children, Dale and wife Allison Papstein of Grand Island, Deb Papstein and special friend Arlen Tschudin of Norfolk, Donna and husband Greg Oslund of Madison, Diane and husband Bob Pospisil of Norfolk, Dave and wife Kim Papstein of Logan, Iowa, Darrell and wife Theresa Papstein of Omaha, 15 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Warren Papstein passed away April 15, 2011; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; mother and father-in-law Clarence and Cecyle Papstein; one brother, George Abboud.
Casket bearers are Greg Oslund, Brandon Papstein, Collin Dirks, Josh Papstein, Jessy Dirks, Derek Papstein. Honorary casket bearers are Arlen Tschudin, John Pospisil, Ryan Pospisil, Zach Papstein.
Music will be by the Bound for Glory Choir and organist Mary Bruckner with hymns "On Eagles Wings," "Be Not Afraid," "Amazing Grace," "Here I am, Lord."

Darlene M. Schufelt
d. May 6, 2011
Services for Darlene M. Shufelt, 79, of Norfolk will be at Stonacek Funeral Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday with burial in Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Keith Christiansen officiating. She died Friday May 6, 2011, at the Norfolk Veterans Home.
Darlene Marie Schufelt was born June 1, 1931, on her maternal grandfather s farm at rural Randolph to Williem and Louise (Papstein) Wipperling. She was baptized June 28, 1931, at Zion East Lutheran Church, rural Hoskins, and confirmed Sept. 21, 1947, at Zion East Lutheran Church. She attended to 10th grade at Hoskins area country school.
She was a member of Zion East Lutheran Church.
Survivors include four children, Duane and wife Jerri Shufelt of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Jolene Layton of Longmont, Colo., Joanne and husband Dave Perrin of Norfolk, Kevin and wife Rose Shufelt of Platteville, Colo.; one brother, John Wipperling of LeMars, Iowa; one nephew, Justin Wipperling of LeMars; nine grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by parents, husband Virgil Feb. 2, 1998, daughter Jenette Rose.
She married Virgil Shufelt April 17, 1953, at Zion East Lutheran Church, rural Hoskins. After they married they farmed in the Hoskins and Winside area. They moved to Norfolk in 1966. Darlene raised her children at home until 1980 when she began working as a house cleaner. She was a housekeeper until she joined Virgil at the Norfolk Veterans Home in 1996. Darlene loved all flowers.
Organist-soloist will be Jill McElhose with congregational hymns, "How Great Thou Art," "Just As I Am" and solo "The Lord's Prayer."
Casket bearers are Roger Brandt, Jason Brandt, Nick Brandt, Darrell Polenske.
