Vera I. Slade
Vera I. Slade was born Aug. 5, 1916 in Bartlesville, Okla. to Robert and Zilla (Davis) Harmon and died Saturday, May 12, 2007, at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord, Neb.
Vera's father died in the 1918 Spanish flu epidemic when Vera was two years old. She had three brothers.
Her mother married
a widower, Charles Fazel, who also had four children. He worked for Gulf Oil and the family moved numerous times during Vera's childhood.
Vera had very fond memories of her formative years. With three brothers, two step-sisters and two step-brothers, there were always other kids to play with . They lived mostly in oil company towns, mainly in Oklahoma and Texas. The kids in a company town formed a tight-knit bond that moved with them from town-to-town.

Earl Slade in Seminole, Okla. They were married
for 71 years.

life, they lived in Oklahoma and Kansas. Earl worked for Cessna Aircraft Company in Wichita, Kan., and at the beginning of World War II, he was transferred to the Cessna plant in Richmond, Calif. They moved to Otoe, Neb. in 1953 and again moved several times as Earl was transferred. They lived in Imperial, Palisade and Benkelman, Neb. before retiring to Ord. After a year in Ord, they moved to Gregory, S.D. where they lived until moving to the Valley County Health Systems Nursing in September, 2005.
Vera was well known in the Gregory area for her tole painting. She created many beautiful pieces and, in addition to exhibiting in area arts and crafts fairs, she shared her talent by teaching several classes to aspiring tole artists in the Gregory area.
After they retired, they still traveled. They purchased a camper which was a familiar sight in and around Gregory and Ord, as they loved to just "get away for a weekend," whether to the river outside of Gregory, to Ord to visit with family, or, even longer trips to the Black Hills, Missouri, Arkansas, Wyoming and Florida.
Vera is survived by her husband, Earl, VCHS; sons, Robert (Alice) Slade, Gregory, S.D., Terry Lee H. (Fiona deJardin) Slade, Schenevus, NY; daughters, Earlene (Bill) Riley, Ord, Neb. and Janice (Bryce) Wright, Brookings, Ore.; seven grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
