Hope Fitzgerald
Hope Arlene Ward was born to Walter William Ward and Florence Edna (Venrick) Ward in their Norcatur, Kansas, home on March 28, 1921. She was greeted at home by an older sister Marion and brothers Howard and Neil. Her family ran a small creamery to sell farmers goods and the children would deliver eggs and milk to local customers. Her mother was a teacher and later the town clerk. Hope enjoyed small town and rural life, while also experiencing the hardships of the Great Depression and the "dirty thirties" on the Kansas prairie. She recalled roller-skating every inch of sidewalk in town. She loved music, learned to play piano and became a percussionist and drum majorette with the school band. After high school, she received a scholarship to Doane College in Crete, Nebraska. She excelled and enjoyed two years of college life. Her sister, Marion, also happened to be living in Crete at the time with her young family and Hope helped out with the babies. They have always been very close.
In 1940, the U.S. was training for WWII, and Doane College was no longer available for boarding students. In those days, teaching was allowed on a two-year certificate, so Hope was recruited by two small towns. She took the job in Benkelman (it paid $100 more per year!) teaching music and kindergarten. Hope soon was invited to the Thursday night dance at the Rainbow Ballroom, where she met John Fitzgerald. He was also new in town, managing the lumber yard for Krotter Yards. On Valentine's Day 1942, they were engaged and wed May 22, 1942. WWII was looming and John had been commissioned in ROTC in college and joined the Army Engineer Corps. They honeymooned on Cape Cod when John was training before shipping out. He was gone for four years. Hope worked at Consolidated Mills in Omaha while he was gone, living with her aunts, Mabel and Belle.
After WWII, they set up housekeeping in Palisade. Martha Ann was born in December, 1946, and Margaret Catherine in November 1950. The family stayed in Palisade while the girls grew up. They enjoyed much family playtime at the cabin on Enders Lake during those years.
Hope was determined to finish her BA degree, attending summer classes at Kearney State College, graduating in 1967. She enjoyed teaching (mostly in the third grade) until she retired in 1987. She remained active in adult education, community and church. Hope always loved books, reading and she was a long-time member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Hope passed away Thursday morning, September 1, 2005, at Chase County Community Hospital, Imperial, Nebraska. She was 84 years of age.
Hope is survived by two daughters: Martha (Marty) Chartier and husband Steve of Paonia, Colorado and Cathy Hoff and husband George of Cheyenne, Wyo.; five grandchildren: Ian, Jennifer, Stephanie, Erin and Jeff; two sisters-in-law, Marie Sailors of Benkelman, Nebraska and Helen Port of Cheyenne, Wyoming; four nieces and one nephew; many friends who she has loved, taught and touched with her life.
