David Mohlman
David Dean Mohlman, the son of Anna Marie (Dealey) and Wilbur Dean Mohlman, was born July 29, 1956, at Red Cloud. He died Friday following a farm accident.
Dave attended the Red Cloud schools and graduated with the Class of 1974. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Korea. After his discharge, Dave completed his formal education at Hastings College. In August of 1979, he was united in marriage with Julianne Martig. This union was blessed with two daughters and two sons. They lived in Hastings for a period of time before moving to the farm north of Red Cloud. He also did some auctioneering for a time. In 1986, they purchased land in Kansas.
In 1986, Dave obtained his insurance license and began selling crop insurance. He represented Farmers Union Insurance. In 1999, he opened an agency in Red Cloud.
While in high school he had the lead role in the school musical and in later years enjoyed singing and participating in karaoke. In his leisure time he followed his passion for reading and exploring the country on his motorcycle.
Dave was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, the Cowles Legion Post and Honor Guard, he was a state representative with National Farmers Union and he served with the Intellectual Disabilities Advocates of Nebraska.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Wilbur and Ann Mohlman. Survivors include his children and grandchildren.
His funeral will be held at10 a.m., Friday at the Red Cloud Community Center with Pastor Darrell Sutton officiating. Private family interment will be at the Highland cemetery in Jewell County. Williams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A Superior High School graduate Bette (Byfield) Curd died Sunday. A private funeral is planned for the members of the SHS Class of 1964.

Marilyn Peterson
Marilyn L. Peterson, the daughter of William (Bill) and Goldie (McClanahan) Cook, was born on Dec. 5, 1939, in Fremont, Neb.
She died on May 9, 2018, at Brodstone Memorial Hospital at Superior, Neb., at the age of 78 years, five months and four days.
Marilyn attended school and graduated with the Class of 1957 from Arlington High School. She was united in marriage to Ronald Peterson on Oct. 18, 1958, at Elkhorn, Neb. The union was blessed with three children.
In 1966, Marilyn and her family moved from Elkhorn, Neb., to Superior. She worked at Blue Cross Serum Company for several years. In her spare time, evenings and weekends, she did dog grooming. She eventually went to work for J. David Aden. While working there she was introduced to tax preparation, which became her career. In 1980, she founded M&R Bookkeeping, where she worked until her death.
Civic responsibility was important to Marilyn. She was involved in the Mrs. Jaycees on both the local and state level. It was through his organization she became a candidate and eventual Nuckolls County Centennial Queen in 1971. She was a Superior Chamber of Commerce member and a member of the Superior Ambassadors. She also served on he hospital board as both a board member and board president.
Marilyn loved to laugh. She had a great sense of humor. Much of that laughter came on the regular trips with her non-bridge playing bridge group. Their motto was "what happens on the trip stays on the trip."
No doubt Marilyn's biggest love was her family. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren all knew she was there for them. She loved any time spent with family. You could always count on seeing "GG" at the sporting events of her grandchildren. She occasionally cheered for the wrong school, but always the correct kid.
Sports were another passion. From the Huskers to the Royals, she was an avid fan. She enjoyed watching golf and the Olympics as well.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Goldie; infant brother, Arnold; mother and father-in-law, Henry and Helen Peterson; brother-in-law, Arnold Peterson; sister-in-law, Janice Peterson.
Survivors include her husband, Ron; daughter, Rhonda Peterson, and sons, Jim (Susan), all of Superior, and Jay (Kristi) of Fairbury, Neb.; five grandchildren, Kristin (Adam) Sunday, Josh Peterson, Brooke (Terron) Bauer, Jason Peterson and Justin Peterson; four great-grandchildren, Jacob, Jetta and Jrey Sunday and Liam Bauer. Brothers, Robert (Janet) Cook of Basking Ridge, N.J., and Raymond (Joyce) Cook of Peoria, Ariz.; brothers-in-law, Larry Peterson of Las Vegas, Nev., and Glen (Joan) Peterson of Fort Calhoun, Neb.; other relatives, a host of friends and her many clients.
Funeral services were held on Monday, May 14, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at Megrue-Price Funeral Home, with Pastor Brian Julin-McCleary officiating.
Music was Elvis recordings of "My Way" and "How Great Thou Art."
Visitation was held on Sunday from 1 to 8 p.m., with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
Pallbearers were Josh Peterson, Jason Peterson, Justin Peterson, Jacob Sunday, Adam Sunday and Terron Bauer. Honorary pallbearers were Kristin Sunday, Brooke Bauer, Jetta Sunday, Jrey Sunday and Liam Bauer.
Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Superior, Neb.
Memorials are suggested to go to the American Diabetes Association or the Southern Nebraska Arts Council in care of the family.

Patricia Schlender
Patricia Amelita Bartlett Schlender, 87, died May 3 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan. She was born on May 24, 1931, in Nelson, the daughter of Clarence and Beulah (Cullen) Bartlett.
Pat spent her early childhood on her grandfather's farm near Bird City. She attended grade school in Mankato and high School in Goodland and Clay Center. She graduated from Clay Center High School in 1949.
Pat attended Kansas State University and earned her bachelor's degree in home economics education after a hiatus as a full-time wife and mother of seven children. She was a member of the Clovia 4-H Scholarship House and was a past alumni advisor.
At K-State, Pat met her future husband, John Schlender. They were married
June, 29, 1952, in the Clay Center Methodist Church. Pat and John started married
life at St. Francis and later lived in Salina, Garden City, Lafayette, Ind., and Corvallis, Ore., and spent the last 49 years in Manhattan, where John was on the Kansas State University faculty.
Pat operated a pre-school for seven years and was the registration supervisor for the Kansas Tax Institute for tax preparers coordinated by her husband.
One of Pat's passions was music. She played the clarinet in high school band starting in grade school when it was difficult to find a uniform small enough to fit her. She directed a church choir in St. Francis and sang in church choirs for 65 years. She encouraged her children to enjoy vocal and instrumental music. She was a charter member of the Flint Hills Masterworks Chorale.
One of Pat's ambitions was to see the world. When she realized that might not happen, she decided to bring part of the world to her. That led to hosting six foreign exchange students for their final high school year through the American Field Service (AFS) program and a private family exchange: Takayuki Enomoto-Japan, Fernando Benitez-Spain, Jacobo Espi-Spain, Maria Teresa Alvarez-Paraguay, Juan Pablo Biagioni-Argentina and Pedro Legarreta-Chile. All six graduated from Manhattan High School and all seven of her own children also graduated from MHS.
At the time of her death, Pat was a member of the First United Methodist church, Manhattan, She served as the president of Manhattan First United Methodist Women, Kansas State University Social Club and AFS adult chapter support group. She taught Sunday school classes and was involved in numerous church volunteer activities. She was a member of the Manhattan Solar Kiwanis Club.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Edward Bartlett, Clay Center, and Larry Bartlett, Murray, Ky.
She is survived by her husband, John, of Manhattan; four daughters: Pamela Jack of Manhattan; Mrs. Tony Hoeppner (Suzanne) of Spring Hill; Mrs. David Rock (Lisa) of Olathe; and Mrs. Kurt Anderson (Kristen) of Suzhou, China; three sons: Douglas of Bozeman, Mont.; Kevin of Bozeman, Mont.; and Scott of Manhattan; 27 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; a brother, Frederick Bartlett, Bluffton, S.C.; and a sister, Janet Coffman, Killeen, Texas.
Service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow (Friday) at the First United Methodist Church in Manhattan, with The Rev. Troy Bowers officiating. Inurment will at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow (Friday) at the Kansas Veterans' cemetery at Fort Riley.

Candas Deepe
Candas Kay Deepe, 72, of Hebron, died last Monday at Thayer County Health Services in Hebron. The daughter of Grover and Doris (Kramer) Burkett, she was born Feb. 15, 1946, in Nelson.
Candy grew up in the Ruskin area and graduated from Ruskin High School with the Class of 1964. She was
baptized and confirmed at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Ruskin. She married
Max Deepe on Nov. 29, 1964, at St. Mark's. The union was blessed with the birth of four children.
She helped out on the farm, raised her children, babysat neighbor children and drove the family grain trucks each harvest season. She also worked as a housekeeper at the Riverside Motel in Hebron, Reinke Manufacturing in Deshler, Bruning State Bank in Hebron and the FSA Office in Hebron.
She passed time working in her flower and vegetable garden. She was an outstanding cook. She liked taking lunches to the boys working in the field. Most of all, she enjoyed time with her family, especially her grandchildren. To Candy, family was the most important.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Beverly Myers.
Survivors include her three sons, Tony Deepe of Deshler, Travis Deepe of Hebron and Trent Deepe of Hebron; one daughter, Mrs. Dan Buresh (Tammy) of Chester; one sister, Pam Buresh of Superior; an aunt, Jackie Myers of Belleville; 10 grandchildren;
11 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends.
Following Candy's wishes, she was cremated and a private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Kroll Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Leila E. Gunn
Leila E. Gunn, 89, died Monday at the Belleville health Care Center. The daughter of Roy and Jesse (Zook) Young, she was born Jan. 23, 1929, in Powell. They moved to Republic when she was a small child. She acquired the nickname "Chick" from her brothers and the name lasted a lifetime.
She graduated from Republic High School with the Class of 1946. In February 1947, she was united in marriage to Charles W. Gunn and to this union three children were born: Gayle Elaine, Patricia Ann and John Charles.
In her early years, Leila worked as a telephone operator, an assistant to Dr. Noble, and a waitress at the cafe, as well as many years working next to Charles on the farm. The Republic post Office was Chick's life for many years, as a carrier, clerk and the OIC for Republic and Webber, until she retired in 1995.
She was a longtime member of the Republic Methodist Church and served on many boards; she was on the city council for many years and served as mayor of Republic. She was a life member and officer in American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 332. Chick moved to Belleville in 2005. She enjoyed reading, Bingo and most of all her family and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; daughter, Elaine Petty; a grandson, Barton Charles Gunn; and siblings, Aileen, Jake, Norm and Byron.
Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Barnett, Belleville; son, John Gunn; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; many other loving family members and friends.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Republic. Direct cremation was chosen by the family and inurnment will take place prior to the service. Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home, Belleville, is in charge of the arrangements.
