Mary Jane Lewis

Mary Jane (Uehling) Lewis was born on Dec. 3, 1938 in Keith County, Neb. She was the second of five children born to Eddie and Laura Pankonin Uehling. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith on Dec. 25, 1938 and confirmed at a later date.
Mary attended country school and later graduated from Perkins County High School in 1956. After high school she enrolled in nurses school in Scottsbluff and became a registered nurse in October of 1959.
Mary was married to John Lewis on Nov. 7, 1959 in Greeley, Colo. Two sons were born to this union. Mary served as a nurse in Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska during her health career. She was living in McCook and was employed by the Hillcrest Nursing Home before her Multiple Sclerosis forced her retirement in 1999.
Mary maintained her home in McCook but had been transferred to the Hastings Mary Lanning Hospital for treatment of the disease. She died unexpectedly late Thursday night, Nov. 24, 2005. She had reached the age of 66.
Mary was a member of A.A.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Mary is survived by her two sons, C.D. and wife Darlene of Capitan, N.M., and Shane and wife Dorene of North Platte, Neb.; four grandchildren, Tammie, Serina, J.D., and Ashley; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Claudetta and husband Herb Peck of McCook, Neb., and Bonnie and husband Mike Johnston of Grant; two brothers, Robert and Glee Uehling and Dean and Carol Uehling all of Grant; many other relatives and friends.
Her body was cremated. Committal of the cremains will be held at the Grant Cemetery on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2005 at 1:30 p.m., with John Long officiating.
A memorial to the MS Foundation has been established.

Ruth Softley Schumacher
Ruth Softley Schumacher was born on Jan. 27, 1914 at Fairmont, Neb. She was the youngest of three daughters born to Fred and Belle Rowe Reams.
The family moved to the Madrid, Neb., area when Ruth was three years old. She attended rural school district 52 south of Madrid and later graduated from Perkins County High School in Grant, Neb., in 1931. Ruth then taught for different rural schools in Perkins County for six years.
Ruth was married to Dwight Softley on May 16, 1937. Two sons, Dale and Donald were born to this union. They lived on a farm east of Grant which Ruth continued to maintain after Dwight's death in 1967. She also worked at the high school cafeteria as well as taking care of her parents during this time.
Ruth was married to Carl Schumacher on June 20, 1972 and they lived on the Schumacher farm northwest of Grant. Carl and Ruth enjoyed taking care of the grounds. They enjoyed their yard, garden, and flowers and enjoyed sharing the produce with others. Ruth and Carl moved into Grant in 1983 and Ruth continued to maintain their home after Carl died in 1994. She moved to Westview Retirement in the fall of 2004 and because of declining health she moved to the Golden Ours Convalescent Home in Grant in May of 2005. She died at Golden Ours late Saturday night, Nov. 26, 2005. She had reached the age of 91.
Ruth had been baptized at the Madrid Methodist Church as a young girl and later transferred membership to the Grant Congregational Church. She had always been active in church with Sunday School and various circles. She also belonged to the Grant Garden Club, Sawyer Extension Club, the Perkins County Museum Association, and Bell Club. She also was always supportive of the 4-H program.
In addition to her parents and two husbands, Ruth was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Hahn Caldwell and Leona Tennison and a daughter-in-law, Cindy Softley.
She is survived by her two sons, Dale and wife Kay of Lincoln, Neb., and Donald and wife Kay of Grant, Neb.; five grandsons, Chad, Craig, Chris, Curt, and Burnill Softley and one granddaughter, Judeen Andrews; three great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005 at the Grant First Congregational Church with Pastor John Keener officiating.
Music was provided by Janie Colglazier, Bob Cummings and Lori McCloskey.
Casket bearers were Ruth's grandchildren. Burial was in the Grant Cemetery. A memorial has been established.

Brenda Glinn
Brenda Glinn was born on Nov. 29, 1956 at Greenville, S.C. She was the second of three daughters born to Harold and Lois Ferguson Bishop.
Brenda moved to Ogallala, Neb., with her mother and two sisters in 1962. She received her education in Ogallala and graduated with the senior class of 1975. Brenda was at the top part of her class academically. She then attended Kearney State Teachers College for a semester and the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb., for a year and a half.
Brenda was married to Jack Glinn on April 4, 1981 in Las Vegas, Nev. Three sons were born to this union. Brenda lived the rest of her life in Ogallala. Brenda worked for the Ogallala Chamber of Commerce and was actively involved when Ogallala was recruiting the thunderboat races at Lake McConaughy. She also served as the bookkeeper for Glinn's Pivot Irrigation Service. Brenda had battled a heart condition for several years and had been moved to the Aurora South Medical Center in Aurora, Colo., where she died early Wednesday morning, Nov. 23, 2005. She had reached the age of 48.
Brenda had served on the Ogallala School Board for eight years. She also actively supported and followed her sons in their different activities. She always maintained a strong faith through her health problems and was actively involved in Bible study.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Brenda is survived by three sons, Dusty, Drew, and Colby "Bo" Glinn all of Ogallala; two sisters, Lori Zeilinger and Libby and husband Donn Gengenbach all of Grant; her niece, Michi Zeilinger of Brighton, Mass.; other relatives and friends.
Services were held Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005 at the Ogallala Berean Fundamental Church with Pastor Eric Wait officiating.
Music was provided by Terri Guthrie and Bob Cummings.
Casket bearers were George Zeilinger, Don Paxton, Gregg Todd, Dennis Ferguson, Regan Lee, and Bud Kleewein.
Interment was in the Palisade Cemetery with Bullock-Long Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Esther Kirkpatrick
Esther Kirkpatrick was born on Feb. 23, 1929 at Venango, Nebraska. She was the sixth of 10 children born to Ralph and Ora Watkins Norman. The family lived southwest of Grant before moving close to Grant where Esther graduated from Perkins County High School with the class of 1946. She was at the top of her class academically. Esther attended Nebraska Wesleyan for one year after high school.
Esther was married to Vance Kirkpatrick on June 19, 1948 at Raton, N.M. Five children were born to this union. They made their home southwest of Grant until 1956 when they moved to Roswell, N.M. They returned to Grant in 1962 and lived there until Vance's masonry work took them to Naperville, Ill., in 1987. They returned to Grant in 1991. Esther had worked at the Perkins County Assessor's office, Moser's Department Store which later became Sexson's, Himi's and for Kelly Temporary Services in Naperville.
Esther had suffered a stroke earlier this fall and had been moved to the Perkins County Community Hospital where she died Thursday morning, Nov. 17, 2005. She had reached the age of 76.
Esther had been a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Eagles' Auxiliary, the United Methodist Church and the ladies chorus, the Intervals. She was currently part of the Monday morning friends bible study at the church. She also enjoyed playing golf.
In addition to her parents, Esther was preceded in death by four brothers, Verdell, Ordell, Maynard and Donnie Norman, one sister, Lorraine Norman, and one daughter, Sandra Lynn Neis.
She is survived by her husband, Vance; three sons, Kelly and wife Anne of Grant, Bradley and wife Ann of Aurora, Ill., and Brian and wife Linda of Plainfield, Ill., one daughter, Janet and husband Larry Herbert of Crofton, Md., son-in-law, Al Neis of Solon, Ohio; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Eleanor Booth and Ardith and husband John Sexson of Grant and Marilyn Jones of Wichita, Kan.; one brother Harry and wife Gladys Norman of North Platte, Neb.; many other relatives and friends.
Services were held Saturday, Nov. 19, 2005 at the Grant United Methodist Church with Pastor Sally Ruggia-Haden officiating. Music was by Dolores Sexson and Bob Cummings.
Casket bearers were Jason, Aaron, Mitchell, Michael, Jairus and Zane Kirkpatrick and Kirk Neis.
Burial was in the Grant Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the Nebraska Boys Ranch or the Grant Public Library. Bullock-Long Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Susan Palmer
Susan Palmer was born on April 4, 1972 at Loveland, Colo. She was the fourth of six children born to Richard and Rachel Knight Palmer.
The family moved to Deming, N.M., and to Grant, Neb., in 1977 where Susie started her schooling. The family later moved to San Marcos, Calif., but Susie returned to Grant her senior year where she graduated from Grant High School in 1990.
Susie worked for Hatch's Market in Grant after graduation before moving to Denver where she worked as a nanny. She lived in Ogallala, Neb., and commuted to Cabela's in Sidney, Neb. She was also employed by Coors in Golden, Colo. She lived in Omaha for a brief time and was presently being trained as a dental assistant in Denver.
She was back in the Grant area and was involved in a one vehicle rollover accident two miles west of Grant on Tuesday night, Nov. 8, 2005. She died instantly at the scene of the accident. She had reached the age of 33.
Susan is survived by her parents of Grant; two sisters, Lesa Quarrell of Las Vegas, Nev., and Kelly Palmer of Grand Island, Neb.; three brothers, Bill of Denver, Matt and his wife Staci of Omaha and Jason in Wyoming; other relatives and friends.
A vigil service was held on Friday night, Nov. 11, at the Grant Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2005, at the Mother of Sorrows Church with Father Bill Grant officiating. Music was by Connie Cohen, Linda Russell and the congregation.
Burial of cremains was in the Grant Cemetery. A memorial has been established.

Marvin H. Quandt
Marvin H. Quandt, 76, of Grand Island, Neb., died Monday, Nov. 7, 2005 at St. Francis Medical Center. Marvin was born on Jan. 12, 1929 at the family farm in Hall County to Herman and Matilda (Meier) Quandt. He grew up in the Grand Island area and attended District East 7 School and Trinity Lutheran School.
He was united in marriage to LaVilla Olson on Nov. 10, 1963 at North Platte, Neb. The couple farmed north of Grand Island, where he especially enjoyed raising cattle.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he was baptized Feb. 10, 1929 and confirmed April 18 1943. Marvin loved working on his farm and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, LaVilla of Grand Island, Neb; son and daughter-in-law Karl and Kim Quandt of Grand Island; daughter and son-in-law, Renae and Pat Kamler of Shickley, Neb.; son and daughter-in-law Ken and Kimberly Quandt of Sidney, Neb.; seven grandchildren: Audrey, Dalton and Collin Quandt, Madeline Kamler, Anthony, Garen and Kassidy Quandt; one brother and sister-in-law Clarence and Ardelle Quandt of Grand Island; one sister and brother-in-law Lucille and Malverne "Bud" McGee of Denver, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister Edith Niemoth.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 10, with family prayer service at the Trinity Lutheran Church with the Reverend Royce Rinehart officiating. Burial was in the Wiegert Cemetery.
Pearl Catherine Stumpf
Pearl Catherine Stumpf was born on Dec. 18, 1914 at Hot Springs, Ark. She was the second of four children born to James Henry and Annis Henderson Hughes. Pearl's mother died when Pearl was four years old. Her father later married Emma Weldon, and they had one son together. Pearl grew up in Hot Springs where she received her education.
She married Johnny Pogue on March 21, 1932 in Hot Springs. Two sons were born to this union, Johnny Marvin and Johnny May, and they both preceded Pearl in death. Her husband died in 1950. She later met Sam Peterson who had come to Hot Springs to visit, and they were married on Oct. 4, 1951 in Alamogordo, N.M. They made their farm home five miles east of Grant, Neb., until 1971 when they moved into Grant. Sam died in 1988.
Pearl was married to Marvin Henry Stumpf III at the Grant United Methodist Church on Jan. 6, 1995. They made their home in Grant but she maintained an active interest with her husband in their farming operation. Pearl had suffered a stroke earlier this fall and had been in failing health since that time. She had been transferred to the Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte, Neb., where she died Friday afternoon, Nov. 11, 2005. She had reached the age of 90.
While living in Hot Springs, Pearl was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Pearl enjoyed the outdoors, especially gardening. She loved her home and was always dedicated to her husband.
In addition to her two husbands and two sons, Pearl was preceded in death by one sister, Muriel Asher, one brother, Monroe Hughes and one half-brother, George Edward Hughes.
She is survived by her husband, Marvin, of Grant; one sister, Vera Wisdom of Sutherland; nieces Evelyn Shults and Carol Lehl of North Platte, and Melvina Inlow of Medford, Ore.; nephews Lon Earl Wisdom of Sutherland and Mike Wisdom of Fayetteville, Ark.; also 10 nieces and nephews from the George Hughes family, other relatives and friends.
Services were Monday, Nov. 14, at Grant United Methodist Church with Pastors Sally Ruggia-Haden and Eldon Davis officiating.
Music was by Dolores Sexson and the congregation.
Casket bearers were Richard Kurkowski, Mike Mayer, Josh Wells, Gerald Burge, Joe Vak and Donn Gengenbach.
Interment was in the Grant Cemetery with Bullock-Long Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Jason Allen Fegler
SSG Jason Allen Fegler, 24 was killed in northern Baghdad, Iraq on Friday, Nov. 4, 2005. Jason was born Jan. 6, 1981 in El Paso, Texas. He is the son of Rita Ann (Lee) and Jim Fegler. He graduated from Banner County High School in 1999 where he was active in sports programs.Â
Jason entered the U.S. Marine Corp upon graduation and served for four and one-half years. He was stationed in San Diego, Calif., and Camp Legune, N.C., where he was deployed to numerous locations around the world.Â
In January of 2005, he entered the US Army and was stationed at Ft. Campbell, Ky., with the 101st Airborne Division. In September 2005 he was deployed to Iraq with the 101st. Â
Jason is survived by his wife Shianne and a son Aiden of Virginia Beach, Va.; his parents, Rita and Eugene Snyder of Harrisburg, Neb., and Jim and Carol Fegler of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; his paternal grandmother Ilo Fegler of Ogallala, Neb., and his maternal grandparents Robert and Myrna Lee of Hay Springs, Neb.; four step-sisters, Amy Snyder of Goodland, Kan., Sarah Snyder of Independence, Ore., Lisa Griffiths and Sara Griffiths. Also surviving are five aunts, Linda Bradfield of Alliance, Neb., Carol and husband Phil Amateis of Broadwater, Judy and husband Greg Allen of Ogallala, Kathy and husband Clyde Katen of Henderson, and Kristi and husband Bruce Kutschara of Scottsbluff, Neb.; and four uncles, Bruce and wife Bev Lee of Hay Springs, Jerry and wife Brenda Fegler of Kentucky, Jack and wife Terri Fegler of Phoenix, Ariz., and John and wife Helen Fegler of Minnesota; a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.Â
He was preceded in death by grandparents John Fegler and Herbert and Linda Snyder.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 12, 2005 at the Banner County School in Harrisburg, with Chaplain George Perry officiating. Burial with full military honors was at the Kimball Cemetery.

Forrest French
Forrest French was born on March 12, 1925 in Hayes County, Nebraska. He was the oldest of eight children born to Irl and Lona Witt French.
Forrest attended elementary school in Palisade, Neb., and later attended high school in Wauneta, Neb., where he graduated in 1943.
Forrest was inducted in to the United States Army in June of 1943 during World War II. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and was involved in the Philippine Liberation campaign. After his honorable discharge in January of 1946, Forrest returned to southwest Nebraska.
Forrest was married to Eva Lee Anderson on Feb. 16, 1947 at her sister's home near Gothenburg, Neb. They made their first home on a farm west of Hayes Center, Neb., for a brief period of time. They moved to Scottsbluff, Neb., where they spent four years before moving to Ogallala, Neb., where Forrest became the minister for the Church of Christ in Elsie, Neb., and Ogallala. They moved to Grand Forks, N.D., in 1969 and later moved to Pierre, S.D., where they were involved with the ministry.
They returned to Ogallala where Forrest was affiliated with Goodall Manufacturing. Later, he was transferred to Ft. Collins, Colo.
They returned to Scottsbluff and retired to Grant, Neb., in 1996. Eva Lee died in January of 2002 and Forrest moved to Sutherland, Neb., in the summer of 2002 to be closer to his children. He was moved to the Indian Hills Manor in Ogallala in 2004 where he died on Monday afternoon, Oct. 31, 2005. He had reached the age of 80.
Forrest was an excellent speaker and he gave many lectures and seminars in a multi-state region for the Church of Christ.
While working as a sales manager for Goodalls, Forrest developed the unique concept of corrosion control for oil pipelines, a field of study that took him to Saudi Arabia and other parts of the country for seminars and lectures.
In addition to his wife and parents, Forrest was preceded in death by three sisters, Barbara French, Doris Harms and Virginia Kramer.
He is survived by two daughters, Kathryn Richter of Ogallala and Nola and husband Bill Scheffler of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sons, Steven and wife Karen and Les and wife Melany, all of Sutherland; 11 grandchildren, James, Michael and Andrew Richter; Becky, Tony, Chris, Larissa, Jacob, Talza and Lucas French and Rachel Lawrence; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Wayne and wife Mary of Springfield, Neb., and Jack and wife Kay of Morse Bluff, Neb.; two sisters, Jane and husband Herb Davis of Pierre and Carol and husband Lonnie Shafer of Exeter, Neb.; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Forrest were held Thursday, Nov. 3 at the Ogallala Church of Christ with Jay Towell officiating. Music was by the congregation and the casket bearers were his grandsons. Burial was in the Ogallala Cemetery with a flag presentation by the Keith County veterans.
