Fern Troudt
Fern Florine Troudt, 96, of Nelson, died Saturday at the Hooper Care Center. She was born Jan. 17, 1921, in Ruskin to Lovell and Alma (Jones) Thayer. She married
Ivan Troudt on July 20, 1943. He died in 2004.
Fern graduated from high school in Ruskin and attended Hastings College, receiving her teaching certificate. She lived the majority of her life in Nelson, moving to Fremont in 2011 and to Hooper in 2014.
In Nelson, Fern was a member of the Nelson Community United Church of Christ, the Church Circle, extension club, VFW Auxiliary and volunteered for the Bloodmobile. Music was important in her life; she sang and played piano by ear and was an excellent harmonizer. She composed a song and sent it to a printing company. Fern was a composer, a whistler and a poet.
She is survived by her daughters, Mrs. Ron Sukstorf (Sandy) of Cedar Bluffs and Mrs. Jack Oberlander (Pam) of West Fargo, N.D.; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Bonnie Sykes; three sisters; two brothers; and a grandson, Cole Sukstorf.
Her funeral was at 11 a.m. yesterday (Wednesday) at the Nelson Community United Church of Christ. Pastors Ivan and Joyce Dean officiated. Burial was in the Nelson Cemetery.

Norma Miller
Norma June Miller, 67, died last Sunday at Smith County Memorial Hospital. She was born in Beloit on Dec. 29, 1949, the daughter of Margaret (Boxum) Miller and Ellis Wayne Miller. She graduated from Oak Creek Grade School and Downs High School with the Class of 1967 and attended Kansas State University. Norma was a retired insurance agent and worked at the insurance agency at the State Bank of Downs for 42 years, retiring in December 2015.
Norma cherished her family. She loved unconditionally and would lend a helping hand to anyone in need. If you were sick, you could count on receiving her homemade chicken soup or your favorite meal to cheer you up and help you feel better. She was famous for her peanut butter cornflake bars, which she knew she must bring to every family gathering.
Norma not only cherished her family, but also her church family and many friends and acquaintances. Her faith in our Lord and Savior was apparent in almost everything she did. She sang in the church choir and was an organist for many years. When it was no longer possible for her to attend services, she looked forward to visits from John Tanis and other members of the congregation who would stop by after Sunday services to bring her the bulletin and copies of that week's sermons. Even when cancer attacked her body and made life more difficult, she remained a faithful servant to the Lord.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Jean Frasier and Joline Miller; and brothers, Melvin Miller and Marvin Miller.
She is survived by her brothers, Eldon Miller, Cawker City, Darrell Miller, Mankato; nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
Her funeral was held Thursday at the Dispatch Christian Reformed Church with Pastor Steve Boersma officiating. Burial was in the South Oak Creek Cemetery. Domoney Funeral Home, Downs, was in charge of the arrangements.

Bonnie Busby
Bonnie Sue Busby, 75, Waynesboro, Miss., died Friday in Mobile, Ala. She was born Dec. 2, 1941, and was a graduate of Jewell Rural High School with the Class of 1959.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Doyle and Marjorie Bowles.
She is survived by two sons, Robert Gray, Jr., Meridian, Miss., and David Thompson, State Line, Miss.; five daughters, Deborah Burdette, Lauderdale, Miss., Susan Sands and Megan Davis, both of Tupelo, Miss., Sheila Boothe, Collins, Miss., Misty Holifield, Waynesboro, Miss.; two brothers, Jack Bowles and Phillip Bowles; two sisters, Pat Malone and Mary Young; 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Her funeral was held at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, Gilbertown, Ala., with The Revs. Donald Suggs and Devin McIlwain officiating. Interment was in the Martin Cemetery, Tallawampa, Ala.

Linda Blackstone
Linda Blackstone, 77 of Allen, Texas, died Monday. Her funeral is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at the Megrue-Price Funeral Home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Elvin Hobson
Elvin "Spud" Carmi Hobson, the son of Clyde and Ida (Fischer) Hobson, was born on Nov. 10, 1931, south of Hardy, Neb., in Republic County, Kan. He died on Aug. 21, 2017, at Brodstone Memorial Hospital in Superior, Neb., at the age of 85 years, nine months and 11 days.
Spud was united in marriage to Norma Edwards on Oct. 10, 1954, and to this union were born three children, Scott, Tony and Ann.
Spud was born in Republic County, raised there and then moved one quarter mile to Jewell County and lived his whole life there except for his two years of military service. On July 24, 1952, he was inducted into the United States Army and was honorably discharged on May 20, 1954.
He was a member of the American Legion and served on the Bostwick Irrigation Board and the Hardy Co-op Board of Directors.
Spud attended more than 1,000 basketball games, watching his kids, grandkids and sons' teams play over the years. He was an avid horseshoe pitcher, competing in several state meets. He enjoyed drinking coffee with his friends in Hardy and especially spending time with his family.
Spud was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Calvin and Clyde, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Norma, of Superior, Neb.; sons, Scott of Hastings, Neb., and Tony and wife, Becky, of Hays, Kan.; and one daughter, Ann Hobson of Superior, Neb.; seven grandchildren, Jason Hobson, Mandy Kamykowski, Mackenzie Oberst, Jordan Tuma, Shae Tuma, Samantha Hobson and Cash Hobson; nine great- grandchildren; one sister, Betty Becker of Black Mountain, N.C.; a brother, Dean Hobson, and wife, Shirley, of Seattle, Wash.; two sisters-in-law, Edie Hobson of Pittsburg, Kan., and Oleta Hobson of Belleville, Kan.; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
His funeral service was held on Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior, Neb., with Pastor Garrett Kahrs officiating.
Music was recordings of "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art."
Visitation was held on Friday, Aug. 25, 2017, from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Pallbearers were Jason Hobson, Jordan Tuma, Cash Hobson, Randy Evert, Monte Dahl and Mike Stenson. Honorary pallbearers were Glenn Edwards, Paul Edwards and Marvin Bockholdt.
Interment with full military honors was in the Rosemound cemetery at Hardy, Neb.
Memorials are suggested to go in care of the family and will be designated at a later date

Jean Paul

Marlene Shrontz
Marlene Kaye Shrontz, 74, died Aug. 12, at her residence in Bossier City, La. She was born Jan; 16, 1943 near Nelson. She graduated from Nelson High School in 1960 and became a certified x-ray technician and worked for more than 20 years in Nuckolls County.
Marlene was a member of the United Methodist Church of Haughton, La. She served the community through the Area Churches Together in Our Neighborhood program which provides food and necessities to those in need. She supported the Meals on Wheels Program, delivering meals to rural residents. She also formed a bond with the AL-ANON organization.
Survivors include her daughters, Mrs. Mark Fletcher (Peggy) of Haughton, La., and Lori Shrontz Richecky of Oklahoma; brothers, Gary Jordan of Salina and Rick Jordan of Omaha; grandchildren, Mrs. David Sandoval (Christina), Alan Richecky and Nolan, Logan and Jordan Fletcher; as well as great-grandchildren, Rachel, Dakota and Aubree Fletcher, Aidan and Lucas Sandoval and Hazel and Brynlee Richecky. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Vivian (Sigman) Jordan and her oldest brother, Bob Jordan.
Her funeral was held Sunday at the United Methodist Church in Haughton, La. Burial will be in the Nelson cemetery at a later date.

Ishan Berentes
Ishan Zeke Berentes, the son of Joe and Heather (Beale) Berentes, was born on Aug. 11, 2003, in Superior, Neb. He died on Aug. 22, 2017, at Superior, Neb., at the age of 14 years and 11 days.
Ishan liked to go fishing at the canal, and also the lake with his family. He enjoyed playing his video games and shooting hoops with his brothers. He was always ready to play Uno, Monopoly and checkers with anyone who asked him. One of his hobbies was fixing and tinkering with bikes. Ishan wanted to be a truck driver like his dad when he grew up, the longest trip he went on with him was to Oregon and back to Ohio then home.
Ishan was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Marlen and Lola Noble, Marvin Beale and Delbert and Arlene Sharp.
He will be dearly missed by his parents, Joe and Heather, and brothers, Ethan and Ashton; grandparents, Dave and Lynda Aksamit and Elois Berentes; great-grandmother, Nana Beale, all of Superior, Neb.; numerous aunt and uncles and a host of friends.
Private family inurnment was held at Evergreen Cemetery, Superior, Neb.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may go in care of the family.

Jerry Vader
Jerry Vader, Superior, Neb., died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017, at Brodstone Memorial Hospital in Superior, Neb. Jerry was born Sept. 18, 1934, to L.J. and Ernestine (Lyons) Vader in Jewell County, Kan., at the family farm.
Jerry attended and graduated from Mankato High School in Mankato, Kan., with the Class of 1953. Jerry joined the Army on Sept. 16, 1954. His tour was in Germany and he served as a gun crewman. He was honorably discharged Sept. 15, 1962. Jerry was married
to Peggy Malsbury on Sept. 30, 1956.
Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy (Malsbury) Vader; son, Martin Vader; sister, Jaqueline (Vader) Whelchel; brother-in-law, Carroll Hajny; sister-in-law, Sharon (Malsbury) Gronewoller; and brother-in-law, Conley Malsbury.
Jerry is survived by his son, Kendall, and wife, Teresa Vader; daughter, Lynette, and husband, Brian McCutcheon; 11 grandchildren, Melody and husband, Curt Iliff, Tina and husband, Shannon Sloane, Onna and husband, Bay Robinson, Nicole and husband, Jeremy Guillotte, Wendy Vader, Melanie Morton, Tiffany Morton, Cassie McCutcheon, Briana McCutcheon, Mac McCutcheon, Aaron and wife, Keelee Loeffler; 20 great-grandchildren, Becca, Brock, Trista, Brett, Taitum, Trinity, Taneal, Shelby, Jade, Bella, Zachery, Joshua, Matthew, Tait, Sophia, Silas, Harlan, Serenity, Leland, and Charlee; sisters, Clarabelle Hajny and Shirley Steele; brother, Harlow Vader; brother-in-law, Harold Steele; and sister-in-law, Pat Patterson; and special friends, Jo Ann Vader, Jason and Melissa and children, MaKenna and Brenden Jensen.
Celebration of life service for Jerry Kendall Vader was Monday, Aug. 28, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at the Olive Hill Church in Jewell County Kan., with Pastor Matt Ehlers officiating. Gloria Schlaefli provided music for the service and Pastor Thaddeus Hinkle was the soloist. The hymns were "The Old Rugged Cross," "Forever and Ever Amen" and "Could I Have This Dance for the Rest of My Life." Casket bearers were Keith Steele, Gary Steele, Larry Steele, Jeff Vader, Randy Vader, LeRoy Vader and Mac McCutcheon. Honorary casket bearers were Curtis Ernst, Curt Iliff, and Jerry's 31 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Interment was in Mount Hope cemetery at Mankato. Visitation was 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017, with family receiving friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Melby Mortuary in Mankato. Online condolences can be left at www.melbymortuary.com. Melby Mortuary was in charge of service arrangements. The family suggests memorials to Mankato Senior Center.
