Kenneth Trubey
Kenneth D. (Bud) Trubey, 78, died May 11 in Ord. He was born June 18, 1938, at the Fort Riley Army Hospital in Junction City to Kenneth D. and Monsolete (Alcorn) Trubey. He attended elementary school at Ionia and graduated from Mankato High School in 1956.
He continued his education at Fairbury Junior college where he played basketball and was selected to the Nebraska Five J.C. All Conference team. The team of 1958 went to the National Junior College Tournament in Hutchinson.
In 1960, Ken graduated from Kearney State College and began his teaching and coaching career at Ord High School. During the first three years Bud coached junior high and then for the next 14 years he coached varsity boys basketball, where his record was 208-88 with several championships and state appearances. He was selected as the head coach of the North All Star Basketball Team.
He was a member of Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was inducted into the 2014 Inaugural Class of the Ord High School Sports Hall of Fame as outstanding coach.
He enjoyed horse racing, watching sports, fishing and refinishing furniture. He was proud of his grandchildren and enjoyed time with his family.
Preceding him in death were his parents and a granddaughter, Reagan McFarland.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy, of Ord; three daughters, Mrs. Matt Gideon (Sara), Burwell, Mrs. Jeremy McFarland (Heather), Grand Island, and Mrs. Skip Reynolds (Erin), Aurora, Colo.; and six grandchildren.
Funeral was held May 15 at Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church with The Rev. Glenda Pearson officiating. Burial was in Ord City Cemetery. Ord Memorial Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

Barbara Kasl
Barbara Lou Kasl, 77, died Friday at the Blue Valley Lutheran Nursing Home in Hebron. The daughter of Ervin H. and Rozelle (Howell) Kleveland, she was born April 6, 1940, in Belleville.
Barb graduated from Chester High School in 1958 and then from Lincoln School of Commerce in 1959. On March 10, 1960, Barb was united in marriage to Donald L. Kasl. She was baptized in the Church of Christ, where she was a member for many years. She was a current member of the Chester United Methodist Church. Barb was a chartered member of the LEO Club, Chester Woman's Club, Bridge Clubs, an officer of the Chester cemetery Board and served as the treasurer of the CHB Alumni for 25 years.
Barb loved her family and had a special place in her heart for all children. She and Don liked to go country cruising. She liked to play cards and taught her children and grandchildren how to play card games at an early age.
Barb's greatest joy was having her family near and enjoyed cooking for family and friends. Barb was an excellent cook. She was a caretaker of her grandmother, her parents and other people in the community. Barb wasn't a seamstress but made all of her grandchildren a baby quilt and numerous Halloween costumes that are still being worn by her great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her five daughters, Mrs. Raymond Wit (Dawn) of Chester, Mrs. Stan Wissel (Sheila) of Bennet, Mrs. Bob Davis (Lisa) of Beatrice, Audra Kasl of Courtland and Mrs. Jim Cherney (Coleen) of Chester; 15 grandchildren; two brothers, Steve Kleveland of Hastings and James Kleveland of Glenwood, Iowa; two sisters, Charlotte Gonzales of Beatrice and Mrs. Max Mumford (Ramona) of Omaha; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a brother, Charles Kleveland.
Her funeral was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Chester United Methodist Church, officiated by Pastor Young Je Kim. Interment was in the Chester Cemetery.

Robert Kinzie
Robert LaVeryl Kinzie, the son of Clifford Kinzie and Wilma (Snavely) Bennett, was born on Oct. 25, 1942, in Nelson, Neb. He died on June 16, 2017, at the Blue Valley Lutheran Nursing Home at Hebron, Neb., at the age of 74 years, seven months and 22 days.
Robert grew up in Superior and was a 1961 Superior High School graduate. He was baptized and confirmed at the Centennial Lutheran Church by Pastor Robert Leege. He moved to Dewitt and later Deshler, Neb.
He enlisted with the Army National Guard of Kansas in June of 1964 and was honorably discharged in June of 1970.
He was united in marriage to Sandra Jenkins on Aug. 22, 1965, at Deshler, Neb., and to this union three children were born. From 1975 to 1986, Robert served on the Deshler Rescue Unit and Fire Department. He was a member of the Eagle's Club in Beatrice for many years.
Robert was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker fan, he liked to hunt and fish in his younger years. He loved music, especially loves songs, 60s music and was an Elvis Presley fan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Michael and Charles.
He is survived by his daughters, Kimberly Fayle and husband, Bobby, of Deshler, Neb., Kathleen Marquart and husband, Jon, of Byron, Neb., and Kristina Kinzie of Beatrice, Neb.; his brother, Steve, and wife, Connie, of Lincoln, Neb.; 10 grandchildren, Danielle, Amanda, Brody, Caleb, Kelsey, Coleton, Keira, Hayden, Danton and Alexis; four great-grandchildren, Braeden, Jaece, Jaelyn and Archer; step son, Wayne Bennett; other relatives and a host of friends.
Graveside services were held on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, at10:30 a.m. at the Nelson cemetery in Nelson, Neb., with Park Mark Hartley officiating.
Pallbearers were Bobby Fayle, Brody Fayle, Danton Cox, Hayden Cox, Jon Marquart and Caleb Durflinger.
Memorials are suggested to go to the Deshler Fire and Rescue Squad.

Ralph Hoins
Ralph Wayne Hoins, 88, died last Monday at Brodstone Memorial Hospital in Superior. He was born Oct. 28, 1928, in Milford to Wrayma Bray. At the age of nine months, he went to live in the home of Irvin and Mable (Kiler) Hoins, who became his parents on March 6, 1930, through adoption.
Ralph received his education at Nuckolls County District No. 50, southeast of Mt. Clare, through the eighth grade. He attended Nelson High School for one year and finished his education at Superior High School graduating with the Class of 1946.
Ralph grew up on a farm near Mt. Clare. In 1944, he moved with his parents to a farm northeast of Guide Rock. Ralph continued to farm with his father until leaving for the service. He became a U.S. Marine in October 1951, receiving his basic training at San Diego, his sharpshooter medal and the rank of PFC. Ralph was transferred to Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, where he was with Motor Transport 3514 from December 1951 to March 1952.
Ralph was united in marriage to Joan Louise Etherton on July 12, 1951, at the United Methodist Church in Red Cloud. This union was blessed with the birth of four children, Linda, Richard, Pat and Christi. The couple lived in Richland, N.C. When they returned to Nebraska, Ralph began farming northeast of Guide Rock, where all four children were raised.
On July 12, 1959, Ralph and Joan were baptized at the First Baptist Church of Guide Rock. Ralph was also a member of Legion Post No. 0278. While Ralph farmed, he was also employed by the Armour Plant in Superior and Booker's Garage in Guide Rock.
When his children became involved in 4-H, he was there to help and give advice and to take everyone to county fairs, dairy shows and cattle auctions. In 1998, Ralph and Joan left their farm near Guide Rock, turning over its operation to their grandson, Richard Morris, and moved to Superior. With little assistance, Ralph was able to find his birth mother in 2008 and in doing so discovered he had two sisters. They became acquainted with phone calls and letters and pictures. With the help of his sisters, he also learned about his aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents. Ralph was a kind and gentle man, a good neighbor and friend, always willing to help.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joan; son, Richard; birth mother, Wrayma Lashmett; sister, Joanie Lake; and nephews, Jere Chapman and Jeff Etherton.
Survivors include his daughters, Mrs. Bob Frank (Linda) of Norfolk; Mrs. Ron Springer (Pat) of Superior; and Christi Hoins of Superior; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
His funeral was Friday at the Guide Rock Baptist Church with Pastor David Sherwood officiating and David Watters as guest speaker. Burial with military honors was in the Guide Rock Cemetery. Williams Funeral Home of Superior was in charge of the arrangements.

Jesse Shields
Jesse Palmer Shields was born Feb. 15, 1934, in Kearney, Neb., and died on May 30, 2017.
Jesse married
Norma Dreiling on Aug. 22, 1959, in Kearney, Neb. They eventually moved to Lincoln, Neb., where in 1972 Jesse opened his business, Gateway Vacuum Center, in the Gateway Mall. Two years later, he opened another branch in downtown Lincoln. Jesse sold his businesses in 1984 and focused on rental real estate until retirement. Jesse and Norma began visiting Cawker City in 2000 and made it their permanent home in 2013.
Jesse was known to many for his love of fishing and traveling as far as Canada to catch walleye. He always enjoyed taking friends and family out on Waconda Lake for a day of fishing. Jesse loved his hunting dogs, Duke and Dushess, and was also an avid University of Nebraska Cornhusker football fan. More than his love of fishing was his love for his family. He was a devoted husband and was adored by his nieces and nephews. Jesse was a kind and generous man, always willing to lend a helping hand when someone was in need.
Jesse was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Frances, and his brothers, Charles and Gale.
He is survived by his wife, Norma (Dreiling); sister, Artis (Jarmin); and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. June 24, 2017, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Cawker City. Kleppinger Funeral Home, 409 Broadway, Jewell, Kan., 66949, are handling the arrangements.

James Buss
James Lee "Jim" Buss, 56, of Blue Hill died June 7, at Bryan Medical West, Lincoln, Neb.
He was born Sept. 14, 1960 to Rodney J. Buss and Irene M. Myers in Hastings. Jim attended Hastings Public School and obtained his GED. On Sept. 3, 1982, Jim was united in marriage to Cindy L. Smith and to this union were born two children, Melissa A. Buss and Kimberly M. Buss. They later divorced. On March 15, 2008, Jim married
Kendra L. Neilson. Together they had two children, Hannah L. Buss and Daniel J. Buss. Jim owned and operated Bussman Enterprise from 1993-1998. Jim liked racing and started to race his own car in 1980. He raced at many places including, Red Cloud, Deshler, Doniphan, Lexington and McCool Junction. Along with time with his family, racing was his life, he liked to take the win in his No. 12 car.
Survivors include his wife, Kendra Buss; children, Melissa Buss and Kimberly Buss of Hastings, Hannah Buss and Daniel Buss; father, Rodney Buss; mother, Irene Buss; mother and father-in-law, Jerry and Cindy Neilson; sister, Diane Buss all of Blue Hill; half brother, Fred Valentine of Lincoln, Neb., grandchildren, Preston Buss of Hastings, Carson Buss of Blue Hill.
He was proceeded in death by a stepmother, Betty Buss, and brother, David Buss.

Steven Long
Steven Kevin Long, 60, the son of Jack and Irene (Greenwood) Long, was born on Dec. 26, 1956, in Lincoln, Neb. He died at his home on May 17, 2017, in Lincoln, Neb.
Steve moved with his parents from their home in Concordia, Kan., to Chester, Neb., in January 1964. He enrolled in the Chester Public School system, later Chester-Hubbell-Byron, and he graduated with the Class of 1975. Steve attended the University of Nebraska and also Kearney State College, later moving to Hubbell, Neb., where he joined his father in the Hubbell Bank.
In 1990, Steve married
Sandra Freese. To this union, their son, James, was born. Some years later, Steve moved to Lincoln, where he lived until his death. Steve was an avid Husker football fan and he liked to hunt and fish in his earlier years.
Steve was preceded in death by his grandparents, J.D. and Nona Long, Rose and Earl Greenwood, and step-grandfather, Henry Wehrman; uncle and aunts, Guy and Betty Swanson, Ann Greenwood Snyder, cousin, LeAne Chab, and step-son, Jordan Gausman.
He is survived by his parents, Jack and Irene Long; son, James and wife Meaghan and grandson Carter; and uncle, Russ Snyder, and a host of very special cousins and friends.
Memorial services were held on Monday, May 22, 2017, at 11 a.m. from the United Methodist Church in Chester, Neb., with Rev. Young Je Kim officiating.
Music was "Hymn of Promise," solo by Pastor Kim and congregational hymns, "Because He Lives" and "He Touched Me," with Kathy Larkins as the accompanist.
A private inurnment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may go to Chester United Methodist Trustees; the People's City Mission or the Clinic with a Heart, both in Lincoln, Neb.
