Margaret Weber
Formerly of Ponca
Margaret E. Weber, 98, formerly of Ponca, died April 2, 2004 at St. Joseph’s Rehab and Care Center in Norfolk, which was her residence for the past 12 years.
Funeral services were Thursday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ponca. Father David Liewer officiated. Burial was in Calvary at South Creek Cemetery in rural Ponca.
Margaret was born Sept. 14, 1905 in rural Newcastle, the daughter of Thomas P. and Katherine A. (Mangan) Fitzgerald. She grew up in the Newcastle area and graduated from high school in Jackson. She married Frank B. Weber on Aug. 17, 1931 in Newcastle. The couple farmed and lived in the Ponca area all of their lives. Frank passed away in July of 1989.
Margaret was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ponca, was an active past member of the Catholic Ladies Society and the Ponca Senior Citizens organization.
Survivors include one son Francis (Gerald) Weber and his wife Zoe of Umatilla, Fla., one daughter-in-law Joann Weber of Ponca, five grandchildren: Michael Weber of Summerfield, Fla., Mary and her husband Doyle Owens of Norfolk, Patty Novak of Umatilla, Loretta and her husband Tim Jones of Sioux City, and Joe and his wife Amy Weber of Homer; eight great grandchildren: Derrick and Dillon Owens, David and Matthew Novak, Kristi Klappal, Rachel and Patrick Weber, Jr. and Austin Weber of Homer.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Frank, one son Donald Weber in March of 1978, one grandson Patrick Weber in October of 1989, two great grandsons, five sisters and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jacob Kunzie
Homer 7th grader
Jacob “Jake” Donald Kunzie, 13, of Homer died Thursday, April 8, 2004 at a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness.
Services were Monday at the Homer High School gymnasium with the Rev. Annette Minderman officiating. Burial was in the Omaha Valley Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate memorials to be used to improve handicap accessibility at the Homer High School.
Jake was born Aug. 15, 1990 in Sioux City, the son of Donald D. and Gaylene F. (Nielsen) Kunzie. He was a seventh grader at the Homer School and annually attended M.D.A. Camp. He enjoyed watching basketball, especially a fan of the Huskers, football, especially a fan of the Dukes, going to movies, monster trucks and playing PlayStation II.
He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Homer.
Survivors include his mother Gaylene, and her fiancé Ivan Roost, Jr. of Homer, his father Donald and his special friend Lisa McArdle of Winnebago, a brother Zeb and a sister Emma, both of Homer, his maternal grandmother Beverly Nielsen of South Sioux City, paternal grandparents Ed Kunzie of Winnebago and Margaret “Peg” Kunzie of Homer, aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Marvin Nielsen.
Pallbearers were Donald, Daniel and Edward Kunzie, Milt Eloe, Paul Heller and Donnie Hightree.

Frances Stull
Long-time SSC resident
Frances Joy Stull, 91, of South Sioux City died Monday, March 22, 2004 at a South Sioux City nursing home.
Services were March 26 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Rev. Chuck Rager and Rev. Duane Queen officiating. Burial was in the Graceland Cemetery.
Frances, a longtime South Sioux City resident, was born May 7, 1912 in Lawton, Iowa, the daughter of Charles F. and Elsie M. (Prescott) Marquart. She graduated from Lawton High School in 1930. She received her teacher’s certificate from Iowa State Teachers College in 1932. She taught in Hospers, Aurelia and Newkirk, Iowa and in the South Sioux City school system. She graduated from Morningside College with a bachelor’s degree in 1961.
She married Carroll D. Stull June 30, 1940 in
South Sioux City. He died Oct. 8, 1960 in South Sioux City.
Frances was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church and various circles and ladies groups of the church. She was a former member of Rebecca Lodge, Daughters of the American Revolution, Thomas Rogers Society and the Society of Mayflower Descendents.
Survivors include a son Walter J. “Bud” and his wife Jane Stull of Minneapolis, Minn., a daughter Jane and her husband Robert Prenger of South Sioux City, a brother Douglas Marquart of Dakota City, four grandchildren: Bob, Corrin, Matthew and Emily and four great grandchildren: Sydney, Brett, Nicole and Jake.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother Charles Kenneth Marquart and a sister Nina Chartier.
Pallbearers were Bob Prenger, Matthew Bribitzer-Stull, Tom Chartier, Jerry Gunsolley, Ed Redenius and Lyle Miller.
Gale R. Booth
Family in Homer
Gale R. Booth, 83, of Lincoln passed away on March 12, 2004.
Gale is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty, daughters and son-in-law Kay and Randy Haveman of Whiting, Iowa, Nancy Booth of Kansas City, Mo., grandson and wife Bill and Tammy Swoboda of Homer and great granddaughters Amber and Annie Swoboda of Homer.
Gale was preceded in death by his grandson Dave Swoboda of Whiting.
Russell Hall
Daughters in Dakota Co.
Russell Hall, 87, of Carroll passed away April 2, 2004 in Sioux City.
Services were Wednesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Winside, Neb. with the Rev. Timothy Steckling officiating. Interment was in the Elmwood Cemetery in Carroll.
Russell William Hall, son of William and Edna (Ulrich) Hall, was born Nov. 25, 1916 on a farm southeast of Randolph, Neb. He attended Pearl Creek Country School near Randolph, then worked as a hired hand for area farmers. Russell was united in marriage to Evelyn Hansen on Dec. 18, 1941 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Carroll. Russell entered the United States Army serving during World War II from January 1942 until his discharge in November of 1945.
The couple moved to their farm north of Carroll where they farmed, operated a dairy farm and raised Grand Champion hogs. Following his retirement in the early 1980s, Russell was employed at Carroll Grand and Freed and was the Elmwood Cemetery Sexton at Carroll for several years.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Winside and was a lifetime member of the Carroll American Legion and served as commander for several years. He enjoyed working with his livestock, watching sports on television, was an avid Cubs fan and especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
Russell is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Sandy Hall and Kenneth and Debbie Hall, all of Carroll; four daughters and three son-in-laws, Joyce and Harley Godberson of Omaha, Marilyn Warburton of Sioux City, Wanda and Sam Schram of South Sioux City and Linda and Jerry Walsh of Hubbard; 18 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, one brother and two sister-in-laws, Harold and Jean Hall of Crawfordville, Iowa and Elenor Hall of Puyallup, Wash., one sister Phyllis Johnson of Washington, Iowa, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Evelyn in December 2002, two brothers and a son-in-law Larry.
Charlotte Krumwiede
South Sioux resident
Charlotte Velma Krumwiede, 70, of South Sioux City died Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services were Friday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home with the Rev. Chuck Rager officiating.
Charlotte was born March 12, 1934 in Winnebago, the daughter of Thomas N. and Ruth V. (Smith) VanCleave. She attended Homer School. She tended bar and did house cleaning for many years. She married Richard L. Krumwiede July 21, 1963 in South Sioux City.
Her hobby was ceramics and she won several ribbons and trophies for her work. She was a loving wife, mother and best friend.
Survivors include her husband, Richard, a daughter Barbara K. Wiscott of Sioux City, a son Thomas B. Garner of Portland, a brother Rolland Hunter, two sisters: Margie Hedrick and Bonnie Heckathorn, all of South Sioux City, a grandson and a great granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
Carl Swanson
Homer resident
Carl Roger “Swede” Swanson, 62, of Homer died Friday, April 2, 2004 at a Sioux City hospital.
Services were Tuesday at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Dakota City, with the Rev. Karen Kaye officiating. Burial with military graveside services was the Omaha Valley Cemetery, rural Homer.
Mr. Swanson was born June 5, 1941 in Homer, the son of Carl V. and Dorothy M. (Stecker) Swanson. He graduated from Homer High School in 1959 and was discharged June 23, 1965. He married Sharon G. Merrill July 23, 1966 in Salem Lutheran Church. He was employed as a baker for Continental Bakery in Sioux City until retiring in 1994.
He was a Lutheran and a member of American Legion, Buckland Post 97 in Homer. He enjoyed the Huskers and all other sports, playing cards and chess.
Survivors include his wife Sharon, two sons: Daniel Swanson of Homer and Keith Swanson of Omaha, a daughter and her husband Wendy and Lindsay Astin of Homer, a sister Sherry and her husband Jim Scheurich of San Antonio, Texas and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Esther Balke
Family in South Sioux
Esther Henrietta “Hildebrandt” Balke, 82, of Perkins Pavillian passed away Thursday, April 1, 2004.
Services were Tuesday in the Peace Lutheran Church with Rev. Donald Boeschen officiating. Burial was in the Parkview Cemetery.
Esther was born in Golden Spike, Alberta, Canada on July 1, 1921 to Rudolf Hildebrandt and Sophia (Gehrke) Hildebrandt. She married Hillard Balke July 27, 1941 in Onaga, Kan. She moved from Yankton, S.D. to Hastings in 1972. She was a high school graduate of Girard High School in Girard, Kan. in 1939. She attended Emporia State College. She taught schools in Avon, S.D.
She was a department manager for Allen’s Department Store starting in 1972 and retired in 1983.
She was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Women’s Lutheran missionary league. She was a church organist for 65 years.
Her husband, Hillard, preceded in death on May 23, 2003 in Hastings.
Esther is survived by one son, Gerald E. Balke of South Sioux City, one grandson Brian E. Balke of South Sioux City and one granddaughter Brenda L. Gawlikowski and husband Bart of Lake Helen, Fla. She is also survived by four sisters, Leota Figge of St. Mary’s, Kan., Lois Werner and husband Lloyd of Norfolk, Grace Springer and husband Phil of Onaga, Kan. and Alice List and husband Rodney of Los Angeles, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one sister and one brother.
Memorials may be given to the Peace Lutheran Church.
Harold Langmack
Emerson resident
Harold Langmack, 96, of Emerson, Nebraska died on Saturday, April 3, 2004 at the Pender Community Hospital in Pender.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Emerson, with the Rev. Gretchen Ritola officiating. Interment will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Emerson.
Harold was born on March 22, 1908 on a farm five miles north of Emerson, to Leonard and Anna (Wriedt) Langmack. The family moved to Emerson in 1918. While growing up, he helped his father run a dairy business. He graduated from high school in 1929, and took over the dairy business in 1936. He sold that business and bought Vogt Produce in 1947. He married Viva Lukens on June 20, 1954 in Emerson. In 1957, he and Densil Sebade bought a mobile mill, and moved to the present Langmack Produce location in 1959. The business was sold to Marlowe and Linda in 1973.
Harold served as president of the Emerson Chamber of Commerce, he also served two terms on the Emerson Town Board. He was secretary-treasurer of the Fire Department for 25 years. He also served on the church council and was treasurer of St. Luke’s Church. He was a past master of the Masonic Lodge, Magnolia Lodge #220, and has held the Jordan Medal since 1996. He was also the secretary-treasurer of the Modern Woodman for 25 years, a member of the Abu Bekr Temple of Sioux City, as well as a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge #182. He also served on the Tri-View Board from 1972 to 1988.
Harold is survived by his wife, Viva, a daughter, Rita Fendrick and her husband Richard of Wakefield, a son, Marlowe and his wife Linda of Emerson. He is also survived by grandsons: Jason Fendrick and his wife Cindy of Omaha; Joe Fendrick of Wakefield, Scott Langmack and his wife Stacey of Mitchell, S.D.; and Tim Langmack of Emerson; as well as a granddaughter Brenda Mueller and her husband Justin of Cortland, Neb. He is also survived by great grandchildren: Morgan, Blake, Cole and Kallie Langmack; and Brayson Mueller, and a nephew Roger Servison of Brookline, Mass.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Hilda Servison.
