James 'Jim' J. Rutt
James "Jim" J. Rutt, 52, died Saturday (Oct. 13, 2001) at his home in McCook.
He was born Jan. 7, 1949, at St. Catherine's Hospital in McCook, to Dick and Lee Rutt. He grew up and attended school in McCook, graduating from McCook High School in 1967. He attended McCook College for one year before transferring to Mildord Technical School where he graduated with a degree in computer science. He returned to McCook and worked for Benjamin, Kasl & Corey. He later worked for Burlington Northern where he worked until health problems caused his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his father; one niece; and four grandparents.
Survivors include his mother, Lee Rutt of McCook; one brother, Tom and wife, Creta Rutt of Clarkston, Wash.; one sister, Marcia Spradlin and husband, Kevin of Clarkston; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be Tuesday, 2 p.m., at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home of McCook with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Private inurnment services for the family will follow. Memorials may be given in his name.

Elsie M. Peterson
ATWOOD -- Elsie M. Peterson, 86, of Atwood, died Tuesday (Oct. 30, 2001) at the Cedar Living Center in Oberlin.
She was born Nov. 22, 1914, in a sod house in Union Township in Rawlins County, Kan., to Axel Gerion Albin and Beda Victoria (Peterson) Peterson. She attended District 72 Sunrise country school. She was a lifetime area resident, a homemaker, and employed for several years by Dr. and Mrs. Charles Henneberger. She lived most of her life on the family farm with her brother, Herbert, moving into Atwood in 1991.
She was a member of the Herndon Covenant Church, and Covenant Women of rural Herndon.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Conrad in 1914, Clarence in 1981, and Herbert in 2000.
Survivors include two nieces, Connie Peckham and husband, Charles of Atwood, and Tonya Hill and husband, Terry of Fort Dora, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Bessie Beth Peterson of Atwood; two great-nieces; and two great-nephews.
Services will be Friday, 2 p.m., at the Herndon Covenant Church in rural Herndon with the Rev. Keith Reuther officiating. Interment will be at the Atwood Fairview cemetery in Atwood.
Visitation is today until 9 p.m. at Brantley Funeral Home of Atwood, and Friday, noon until the time of the service at the church.
Memorials may be given in her name to the Herndon Covenant Church.

George Stewart
George R. Stewart, a longtime resident of Curtis, died Mar. 2, 1997 at Sunset Haven Nursing Home in Curtis.
He was born July 11, 1908 at Swanswick, Ill., to Robert L. and Margaret Robb Stewart. He graduated from NSA in Curtis in 1926 and attended the University of Nebraska, Lincoln for one year. He and his father farmed for many years. After he quit farming, he bought and operated a gasoline transport business for a number of years, selling the business and enlisting in the Army where he served two and a half years, part of the time on overseas duty. After returning home, he worked 30 plus years for Wetzel Implements of Curtis.
In April of 1947, he married
Margaret Kitchen. They continued to live in Curtis.
George was a 75-year member of the United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of the American Legion of Curtis and a member of the Masonic Lodge, York Rites, Eastern Star and Elks of McCook.
Survivors include his wife Margaret; a sister Katherine and husband, Ross Dunn of Centralia, Wash.; a sister-in-law, Helen Grannis of Curtis; a niece and two nephews; great-nieces; great-nephews; cousins; and a host of friends.
A memorial has been established.
Services were held Mar. 6 at 11 o'clock at the Curtis United Methodist Church. Rev. Stan LaRue officiating. Music was provided by Joan Wetzel.
Pallbearers were Robert Russell, Robert Furrow, Opal Shaffer, Buzz Cole, Dwayne Covey and Ward Schick. Interment was in the Curtis cemetery with Wetzel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Kenneth D. Shinley
Kenneth D. Shinley, 73, of Westminster, Colo., died Feb. 27, 1997. Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Mar. 4 at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel with burial at Fort Logan Na tional Cemetery. Shinley was born at Orafino May 27, 1923. He lived in the Stockville area for many years.
He married
Myrna Oliver in 1967. He was an over-the-road truck driver. He was a member of the Westminster Elks and VFW.
Survivors include his wife; daughters VirJean Brooks, Margie Senkins and Vickie Whitney; son Richard; nine grandchildren; a great-granddaughter and one brother, Dwaine Shinley of Stockville.
Wayne Goettsch
Wayne Goettsch of Bella Vista, Ark., died recently. His wife was the former Doris Luedeman. He is survived by his wife Doris and 4 sons, brothers, sisters and grandchildren. Rev. Wayne Bartruff was in charge of the graveside services. Doris' address is 7 Melonie Circle, Bella Vista, Ark., 72714.
Elizabeth Lukl
CLARKSON - Elizabeth Lukl, 97, of Clarkson, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Clarkson where she had been a resident for about two years.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at the New Zion Presbyterian Church in Clarkson with the Rev. Dr. Earl F. Underwood, Jr. officiating. Burial will be at Clarkson National Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday at the church and will resume from 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the church.
Mrs. Lukl was born Aug. 20, 1905, south of Clarkson to Christian and Amelia (Najman) Gross. She graduated from Clarkson High School in 1924 and then attended Chadron Normal College for two years.
She married
Jerry Lukl on Feb. 16, 1928, in Schuyler. She taught school for several years in western Nebraska before returning to the Clarkson area. She and her husband made their home on the family farm south of Clarkson for many years before retiring and moving into Clarkson in 1970. She was very active in the Clarkson community. She volunteered at the library for 17 years and served on the Library Board for 15 years, serving as president for many years. She was an active volunteer at the church and with the Clarkson Women's Club. She also volunteered many hours with the special education program in the Clarkson schools. She did baking demonstrations for many years at Czech Days.
Survivors include one daughter, Shirley (James) Gustin of Clarkson; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband on July 22, 1992; her twin sister, Frances Hamernik; one sister, Mary Cednick and eight brothers, Gerhard Gross, Edwin Gross, Frank Gross, William Gross, Charles Gross, August Gross, Ben Gross and Earl Gross.
Memorials may be directed to the Clarkson Public Library or New Zion Building Fund.

Melvin Hueschen
MONROE - Melvin Hueschen, 85, of Monroe died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.
Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus with the Rev. Timothy White officiating. Burial will be at Zion Lutheran Grand Prairie, Platte Center.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday at Gass Haney Funeral Home in Columbus and from 9-10 a.m. Saturday at the church. There will be a family prayer service at 9:45 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Walter Schumacher Jr.
PLATTE CENTER - Walter J. "Sonny" Schumacher Jr., 80, of Platte Center died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Columbus Community Hospital Inc.
Services are 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church at Platte Center with the Rev. Rodney Kneifl officiating. Burial will be at Ss. Patrick/Joseph cemetery at Platte Center.
Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. Thursday at McKown Funeral Home in Columbus and after 6 p.m. with a 7 p.m. vigil Thursday at the church. Visitation will continue from 9-10 a.m. on Friday at the church.
Mr. Schumacher was born Jan. 7, 1922, in Platte Center to Walter and Bertha (Kuhlen) Schumacher Sr. He grew up in rural Platte Center and received his education at St. Joseph Grade School, St. Joseph High School and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
He married
Lougene Blecher at Humphrey on Sept. 29, 1948, in Humphrey. He farmed for 13 years on the home place. He also had his own insurance agency and worked as the state supervisor for Homestead Insurance Co. of Lincoln.
He was a lifetime member of the church. He served as a church trustee, served on the parish council and the Endowment Board. He was an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus Council 938, Scotus Board and the Elks. He was an avid football fan.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Patricia (Darrell) Janssen of Columbus and Debra (Brian) Johnson of Franklin, Tenn.; two sons, Richard (Beverly) Schumacher of Kearney and Roch (Janet) Schumacher of Apopka, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Mary Ann Schumacher of St. Charles, Mo.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Jack Schumacher and Paul Schumacher.
