Fred Whitney
FULLERTON - Fred R. Whitney, 85, of Fullerton, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003 at the Litzenberg Memorial Hospital in Central City.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Fullerton with the Rev. Valjean Warman officiating. Burial will be in the Fullerton cemetery with military rites conducted by The American Legion Post 151 of Fullerton.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton.
Mr. Whitney was born June 28, 1918, to Jacob and Mary (Splichal) Whitney in Nance County. He attended District 55 "Whitney School, " graduated from Fullerton High School in 1936 and from the University of Nebraska in 1941.
He married
Helen Forney on June 16, 1941, at Fullerton.
He taught vocational agriculture in Rushville until entering the U. S. Navy in 1942, serving as a lieutenant. In 1945 he returned to farm the family farm at Fullerton until 1992 when he retired and moved into Fullerton.
He was a member of the church, a lifetime FFA alumni member, the Lions Club, the Tatters, and the Eagles. He served on the District 55 school board, the ASCS Board and the Farmers Co-op Board.
He received the Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award in 1998.
He enjoyed gardening, genealogy, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Jean (Jerrold) Hibbs of Smithfield, Marilyn (Terry) Grotelueschen of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Linda (Dale) Lesiak of Fullerton; a brother, Leslie (Jean) Whitney of Grandview, Mo.; a sister, Mary (Bill) Wynne of Reinhold, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Joe Whitney.
Christina Levos
COLUMBUS - Christina A. Levos, 19, of Shelby, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby with the Rev. John Rooney officiating.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday with a 7 p.m. vigil and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday all at the church.
McKown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Virginia Johnson
NEWMAN GROVE - Virginia Johnson, 88, of Newman Grove, died Sunday, Aug., 3, 2003, at St. Cloud, Minn.
Services are pending with Newman Grove Memorial Funeral Home in Newman Grove.
Blake Kelly
COLUMBUS - Blake C. Kelly, 21, of Columbus, died Tuesday July 29, 2003, in Bosnia.
An outdoor service is 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church -Pilzno, 1740 140th Road, Osceola, with the Rev. Thomas McGuire officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites conducted by the Nebraska Army National Guard.
Visitation is after 4 p.m. today with a 7:30 p.m. vigil at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby and will continue Wednesday from 9-10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church - Pilzno.
Mr. Kelly was born May 7, 1982 to Randy and Patty (Bock) Kelly in David City. He graduated from Shelby High School in 2001. He attended Southeast Community College in Beatrice where he majored in livestock production and was an active member of the Rodeo Club.
He married
Christina Cyza on Sept. 7, 2002, at St. Mary's Church-Pilzno.
He was a member of the church.
He served in the Nebraska Army National Guard from Nov., 17, 1999, to July 29, 2003. He enlisted into Detachment 1 Troop A 1-167th Calvary Squadron as an Abrams Tank System Maintenance Mechanic. He attended basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C., and advanced individual training in Fort Knox, Ky. His units of assignment included Detachment 1 Troop C and Troop B 1-167th Calvary Squadron for the Bosnia deployment.
Survivors include his wife, Christina of Columbus; his parents, Randy and Patty Kelly of Shelby; two sisters, Tina (fiancé, Shane Fedde) Kelly of Columbus and Korie (Christopher) Whitmore of Shelby; a grandmother, Joan Bock of Shelby; and a grandfather, Marlyn Kelly of Iowa Falls, Iowa; his parents-in-law, Ron and Yvonne Cyza of Columbus; four sisters-in-law, Sandra (Michael) Burwell of Shelby, Laura (Michael) Moravec of David City, Mary (Chad) Brady of Sioux City, Iowa, and Angela Cyza of Columbus; and a brother-in-law, Mark Cyza of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by a grandfather, Don Bock and a grandmother, Doris Blankenship.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Alice Deichmann
LEIGH - Alice A. Deichmann, 90, of Columbus, formerly of Leigh, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003, at the Columbus Community Hospital.
Services are 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church of Leigh with the Rev. Douglas Zurek officiating. Burial will be in the Leigh Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. today at Leigh Memorial Funeral Chapel at Leigh and continue on Wednesday for one hour prior to services.
Mrs. Deichmann was born July 25, 1913 to George and Emma (Thalken) Reininger Sr. at rural Leigh. She attended District 20, rural Leigh in Colfax County.
She married
George H. Deichmann Feb. 7, 1934, at Leigh. They farmed south of Leigh until retiring to Leigh in 1969. She remained living in Leigh until moving to Cottonwood House in Columbus in April of 2002.
She enjoyed crocheting afghans.
She was a member of the church, the church guild, the Jolly Wilsonettes Extension Club, the Sunnyside Club, and the Dozen Card Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Bernice (Gary) Busteed of Columbus and Mona (Wayne) Kubert of Lincoln; a sister, Adeline Brown of Leigh; four grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband on March 25, 1997; a sister, Katherine Wendt; two brothers, Fred Reininger and George Reininger Jr.; and a granddaughter.
Kurtis Bembry
COLUMBUS - Kurtis O. Bembry, 53, of Lakeside, Calif., formerly of Columbus, died Thursday, July 24, 2003, at Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa, Calif.
Services are 11 a.m. Monday at Gass Haney Funeral Home in Columbus with the Rev. Nancy Peebles officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial cemetery in Columbus with military rites conducted by The American Legion Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard.
There will be no visitation.
Jonathan Craft
COLUMBUS - Jonathan "Jon" Wayne Craft, 23, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha.
Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Gass Haney Funeral Home in Columbus with the Rev. Gary Main officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. today and 8:30-10 a.m. Saturday, all at the funeral home.
Mr. Craft was born Feb. 5, 1980 to Larry Craft and Judith (Mott) Coe in Hastings. He attended Columbus and Lakeview Public Schools.
He was a mechanic. He enjoyed fishing, model cars and building things.
Survivors include his father, Larry (Therese) Craft of Hastings; his mother, Judith (Mike) Coe of Columbus; a son, Jordan Craft of Columbus; four sisters, Abigail Coe, Emilie Coe, Stacy Dwelle, and Stephanie (Scott) Stevens, all of Columbus; a step-sister, Cassie Coe of Lincoln; a step-brother, Chad (Brenda) Coe of Hastings; grandmothers Virginia "Ginger" Craft and Mrs. Byron Mott, both of Hastings; and special friend, Sarah Long.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Gilbert Craft and Byron Mott.
