Theodore Gartner
ALBION - Theodore "Ted" Casper Gartner, 97, of Grand Island, formerly of Albion, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at the Veterans Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Albion with the Rev. Frank Baumert officiating. Burial is at the Rose Hill cemetery in Albion with military rites conducted by the American Legion Post 162 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 736.
Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday with a 6:30 p.m. wake at the Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Mr. Gartner was born Jan. 16, 1903, on a farm southwest of Albion to Ignatius and Agnes (Redler) Gartner. He attended elementary school at Boone County District 42. He farmed until 1936, when he and his parents moved to Albion. He worked for a time at the Great Western Sugar Factory in Ovid, Colo., and had other jobs in Nebraska and Iowa. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. His active duty was from 1942-45. He served in the South Pacific area during World War II. He was honorably discharged with a rating of First Class Petty Officer (Carpenter's Mate First Class). After returning to Albion, he became a carpenter. He also bought a farm south of Albion where he raised crops and cattle.
He married
Gertie Saarem Nov. 16, 1948, in Chicago. They had lived all their married
life in Albion. In 1971, his eyesight began failing, but he continued to do some carpentry and farming for several years. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking and refinishing. He moved to the Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward in August 1997, then to the VA Home in Grand Island in January 1999. He was a member of the church throughout his life in Albion. He served on the Selective Service Board, and held the office of quartermaster in the VFW Post 736 of Albion for two years.
Survivors include one daughter, Jane (Tom) Goering of Grand Island; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife on Jan. 31, 1996; a daughter and son-in-law, JoAnn (David) Kratzer; an infant granddaughter; three brothers, Leo, Frank and Adam, and four infant brothers; and two sisters, Mary Flack and Helen Koeppen.
James Martin
SCHUYLER - Dr. James A. Martin, 38, of Schuyler died Monday, April 3, 2000, at the Alegent Health Memorial Hospital in Schuyler.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Schuyler with the Rev. William Whelan officiating. Burial is at the Schuyler Cemetery.
Visitation is until 5:30 p.m. today at the Svoboda Funeral Home North Chapel in Schuyler and after 6:30 p.m. at the church with a 7:30 p.m. rosary. Visitation continues Thursday from 8:30-10:15 a.m. at the North Chapel.
Mr. Martin was born Oct. 27, 1961, in Crawford to Dr. Benjamin O. and Regina A. (VanErt) Martin. He graduated from Pender High School in 1980, attended the University of Nebraska and graduated from Wayne State College in 1985 with a bachelor of arts degree in biology. He then graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1989.
He married
Jill Hanson Oct. 9, 1987, in Concord. He was a family practitioner. He moved to Schuyler in 1992. He was the chief of staff for Alegent Health in Schuyler, the medical director of Schuyler Nursing Center and Birchwood Manor in North Bend, medical director of Schuyler Ambulance and Howells Ambulance, medical director for the Immunization Clinic in Schuyler, medical director for Head Start in Schuyler, on the Alegent Health CME committee, recipient of Neuroanatomy Award of Excellence in 1989 and the Nebraska Public Health Award-Special Recognition 1999.
He was a member of the church, Schuyler Knights of Columbus, American Association of Family Practice, Nebraska Academy of Family Practice and Nebraska Medical Directors Association.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Lauren, Bonnie and Claire, all at home; one son, Will, at home; his parents of Pender; three brothers, Benjamin Jeffrey (Donna) of Wayne, and Dr. Steven Leslie (Anita) and Dr. Michael Patrick (Viann), all of Lincoln; six sisters, Kimberly Ann (Bill) Benson of Norfolk, Jeanne Lynn of Omaha, Joni Lynn (Kevin) Duncan of Kearney, and Julie Ann (Pat) Melena, Jill Marie (Chris) Bessmer and Shannon Marie (Doug) Carroll, all of Wayne.
Memorials are suggested to the Schuyler Library Foundation or the church.
Oswald Engelbart
COLUMBUS - Oswald "Ozzie" G. Engelbart, 55, of Fayetteville, Ark., formerly of Leigh, died Saturday, April 1, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rogers, Ark.
Graveside services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Roselawn cemetery in Columbus.
There is no visitation.

Lawrence Moran
COLUMBUS - Lawrence L. Moran, 78, of Columbus died Sunday, April 2, 2000, at the Columbus Manor.
Services are 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus with the Rev. Katherine Bullard officiating. Burial is at the Roselawn cemetery in Columbus.
Visitation is from 2-5 p.m. today at Gass-Haney Funeral Home in Columbus. Visitation continues Thursday from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the church.
Mr. Moran was born March 1, 1922, in Moundsville, W. Va., to Lawrence Larkin Sr. and Kathryn G. (Mitchell) Moran. He was raised in Gary, Ind. He graduated from high school in Gary and also graduated from Illinois Technical College in Chicago. He took classes at the University of Wisconsin.
He married
Charlotte Davis March 18, 1961, in Lansing, Ill. After marriage, they lived in Gary for three and a half years, then moved to Des Moines, Iowa, for three and a half years before moving to Columbus in 1979. He worked for Nebraska Public Power District as an electrical engineer for nine and a half years. He was a member of the church and drove the church bus to pick up the elderly for services.
Survivors include his wife.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and one sister.

Dorothy Warnick
STROMSBURG - Dorothy W. Warnick, 80, of Osceola, formerly of Polk, died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at the Osceola Good Samaritan Center in Osceola.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg with the Rev. Willis Pauls officiating. Burial is at the Polk Cemetery.
Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Ms. Warnick was born Dec. 29, 1919, on a farm east of Polk to Charles Albert and Lenora Florence (Johnson) Warnick. She attended school at District 26 near Polk. After school, she resided on the family farm where she was a homemaker for her parents and then her brother.
On Aug. 6, 1990, she moved to the nursing home due to her health.
Survivors include one brother, Leonard (Hilda) of Polk; and one sister, Marjorie Ehn of Polk.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Robert Lowell, Elmer and Virgil Walter; and one sister, Muriel Rinterman.
Lucille Walford
OSCEOLA - Lucille Walford, 77, of Stromsburg died Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.
Services are pending with Kepner-Roberts Funeral Home in Osceola.
Frank Cernousek
FULLERTON - Frank J. Cernousek, 88, of Fullerton died Wednesday, April 5, 2000, at Boone County Health Care Center in Albion.
Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton is handling local arrangements.
Stella Toy
COLUMBUS - Stella M. Toy, 68, of Bellwood died Sunday, March 26, 2000, at the Columbus Manor.
Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Gass-Haney Funeral Home in Columbus with the Rev. Marie Paterik officiating. Burial is at the Bellwood Cemetery.
Visitation is from 2-8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, all at the funeral home.
Mrs. Toy was born Oct. 14, 1931, in Columbus to Eugene and Isabelle (Hopkine) Lewis. She attended Bellwood Public Schools.
She married
Robert Toy in Texas. They enjoyed traveling, country music and concerts. She spent her entire life in the Bellwood area. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband; her mother of Bellwood; four sons, Clifford of Columbus, David of Conde, S.D., Robert Jr., and Roy (Kristi), all of Lincoln; two daughters, Debora of Bellwood and Cheryl (Newil) Wall of Grand Island; two brothers, Bobby (Marie) Lewis Sr. of Bellwood and Gary Lewis of Fallon, Nev.; one sister, Darlene Lovell of Columbus; one brother-in-law, James Egr of Bellwood; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father; two brothers, Richard and Lloyd; one sister, Bonnie Egr; and one grandson.
Memorials are to be family's choice.
Rose Laska
GENOA - Rose B. Laska, 96, of Genoa died Monday, March 27, 2000, at the Columbus Community Hospital Inc.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Genoa with the Rev. Robert Nienaber officiating. Burial is at the St. Stanislaus cemetery in Duncan at 1:30 p.m.
Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the church with a 7:30 p.m. wake service.
Mrs. Laska was born April 2, 1903, near Duncan to Gustav and Anna (Drozd) Drozd. She attended St. Stanislaus Catholic School.
She married
John Laska Feb. 7, 1923, in Duncan. They then farmed near the communities of Monroe, St. Edward and Lindsay until 1962 when they retired and moved to Genoa. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1973. Mr. Laska died on Jan. 13, 1979. She moved into Country View Care Village in Genoa in October 1989, and had been living there at the time of her death. She was member of the church where she was honored in February as being the oldest living member, and also the church Altar Society. She loved baking, gardening and playing cards.
Survivors include one daughter, Genevieve (Edward) Sempek of Columbus; one son, Dennis (Delores) of Columbus; one sister-in-law, Victoria Drozd of Columbus; one brother-in-law, Frank of Szynwald, Poland; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; three children, Adrian, Lawrence and Delores; four sisters, Laura, May, Elizabeth and Viola; and four brothers, Alex, Charlie, Tony and Frank.
Memorials are suggested to the Genoa Medical Services Foundation in Genoa.
