U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Dr. Richard Shigley
Dr. Richard Todd Shigley, 60, of Granbury, Texas, and formerly of Nebraska City, died Oct. 9, 2007 at a Fort Worth Hospital in Texas.
He was born and married in Nebraska City.
Memorial services will be held Friday, Oct. 12, 2007 at 3 p.m. at Wiley Funeral Home Chapel in Granbury, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two step-brothers, Wayne and Dean Lange and step-sister, Donna Lange Clark.
Dr. Shigley was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Sharlene of Granbury; daughter and her husband, Sarah Shigley and Jonathan Zarate of Beaumont; and brother and his wife, Orville and Sharla Shigley of Mobile, Ala.

Erwin ‘Erv’ A. Berthold
Erwin "Erv" A. Berthold, 82, of Nebraska City, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2007, at his home with his family at his side. He was born on Aug. 15, 1925 in Nebraska City to G. E. and Christina (Guthals) Berthold.
On Aug. 15, 1943 Erv entered the Navy and served during WWII. On July 6, 1945, Erv and Reva M. Yeager were married in Hiawatha, Kan. He received his Honorable Discharge on Dec. 18, 1945 and returned home to graduate from Nebraska City High School in 1946.
He worked in the family business, Berthold Florist and Greenhouse, until he retired in 1983. He was a member of the Bethel United Church of Christ, Elks Lodge 1049, Fraternal Order of Eagles #968, American Legion Post #8 and the VFW. He enjoyed being outdoors hunting and fishing, traveling, and collecting WWII memorabilia.
He was preceded in death by daughters Linda Hobbie and Susan Fleck; grandsons Shane Fleck and Adam Hobbie; brothers Otto and Walter "Shorty"; and sisters-in-law Jean Berthold and Gail Brown Berthold.
Survivors include his wife, Reva M. Berthold of Nebraska City; son Gary Berthold and wife Mary Ellen of Nebraska City; two sons-in-law, Jack Hobbie and wife Peggy of Nebraska City and Bill Fleck of Springfield, Mo.; six grandchildren: Gerald Berthold, Randall Berthold, Richard Berthold, Scott Berthold, Kelly Fairbanks and Jason Fleck; six great grandchildren; brother Arthur Berthold of Lincoln; two sisters-in-law, Mina Yeager of Nebraska City and Yvonne Berthold of Grand Island; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
Visitation will be Friday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 5-7 p.m. at the Peterson Mortuary Chapel.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13, at 11 a.m. at Peterson Mortuary Chapel, with the Rev. Roger Good of the Bethel United Church of Christ officiating. Burial with full military rites will be by the American Legion Post #9 and Nebraska National Guard Honors Funeral Detail at Wyuka Cemetery in Nebraska City. Casket-bearers will be LaVerne "Slick" Baucke, Gerald Berthold, Randall Berthold, Richard Berthold, Scott Berthold, Kelly Fairbanks and Jason Fleck.
Memorials may be directed to the choice of the family.
Arrangements are by Peterson Mortuary.

Max Cupp
Max Leroy Cupp, Sr., 78, of Thurman, Iowa, died Oct. 7, 2007. He was born at home Feb. 27, 1929 three minutes after his twin sister, Marion, to Cassell and Eva (Webber) Cupp. He married Lillie Ann “Billie” Hill May 25, 1950 at Council Bluffs.
He graduated from Thurman School in 1946. He attended Tarkio College in Tarkio, Mo., and graduated from Peru State College in 1951.
He served in the Navy from Dec. 5, 1951 to Oct. 27, 1955. He then worked in several states before returning to Thurman.
He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and training English Pointer and German Shorthair hunting dogs. He raised and trained a field-trial champion, Paladins War Brandy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, brother-in-law Don McKim and sister Norma Cupp McKim.
He is survived by sister Marion Cupp Johnson and husband Bill of Thurman; son Max Cupp and wife Dee of Malvern, Iowa; daughter Mary Cupp Whelton and husband John of Omaha; daughter Michelle Cupp Deatz and husband Scott of Rock Port, Mo.; sister-in-law Patty Desh and husband Bob of Palmyra; nieces and nephews John and Sue Johnson, Ryan Johnson, Emily Johnson, Jim McKim and Robby McKim.
Graveside services with military rites are at the Thurman Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 12 with Gary Moles officiating and hymns by family friend Brian Forney.
Honorary pallbearers will be Scott Deatz, John Whelton, John Johnson, Jim McKim, Bill Johnson, Cass Cupp, Kelsey Peverill and Bob Desh.
Memorials are suggested to Thurman Cemetery’s Avenue of Flags.

Crystal G. McPherson
July 27, 1905-Sept. 18, 2007
Crystal G. McPherson, 102, Syracuse, formerly Douglas, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2007, at the Syracuse Good Samaritan Center. She was born June 27, 1905, at Hickman, daughter of Ben and Mamie (Morrison) Walvoord. She married David McPherson June 11, 1929, at First Presbyterian Church, Lincoln. He died May 15, 1991, at Omaha.
McPherson was a retired teacher. She was a member of the Syracuse United Methodist Church and Alpha Delta Pi.
Surviving are a son, Douglas and wife Mary, Angel Fire, N.M.; daughter, Carol Krogh and husband Darrel, Syracuse; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded by her parents; one sister and one brother-in-law.
Services were Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Syracuse United Methodist Church. The Rev. Richard Dimond officiated. Interment was at Park Hill Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Scott, Darin and Patrick Niday; Rick Swanson; Dave Nannen; Robert and Benjamin Wilkinson and Patrick McPherson.
There was congregational singing.
Memorials are suggested to the Syracuse United Methodist Church or the Syracuse Good Samaritan Center.
Fusselman-Wymore Funeral Home, Syracuse, was in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy M. Patterson
Sept. 24, 1923-Oct. 4, 2007
Dorothy Margaret Patterson, 84, Lincoln, formerly Syracuse and Tecumseh, died Thursday, Oct. 4, at Lincoln. She was born Sept. 24, 1923, at Syracuse, daughter of William and Dora Wilken. She married Columbus Patterson May 4, 1944, at Garden City, Kan. He died May 28, 1989.
Surviving are daughters, Karen Wells and husband Virgil, and Wanda Johnson and husband Harry, all Lincoln; five grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides her husband, Patterson was preceded by her parents; daughter, Beverly Warner; sisters and brothers.
Services were Monday, Oct. 8, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lincoln. Pastor Jeffrey L. Bloom officiated. Interment was at the Tecumseh Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Clarence Wells, Jonathan Johnson, Jason Barber, Silverio and Caden Asencio and Ted Woodard.
Honorary pallbearers were Wanita Frattalone, Michelle Asencio, Shawn Barber, Amy Johnson and Donna Throneberry.
Memorials are suggested to the family’s choice.
Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home, Lincoln, was in charge of arrangements.

Angela E. Volkmer
Angela E. Volkmer, 89, Nebraska City, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2007, at the Ambassador, Nebraska City. She was born Feb. 17, 1918, at Watson, Mo., daughter of Jacob Nicholas and Amelia Elsie (Herman) Leisman. She married Emil Volkmer Dec. 4, 1939, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church near Paul. He died Dec. 21, 1964. She later married Ronald M. Volkmer Dec. 26, 1968, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Nebraska City. He died Sept. 25, 2002.
A 1935 Nebraska City High School graduate, Angela Volkmer was a housewife and homemaker. She also worked for optometrist Dr. Wilmes in Nebraska City. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, Catholic Daughters, an associate member of the Legion of Mary and was a 4-H leader five years. She was in charge of the funeral dinners at St. Mary’s Catholic Church for many years. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are her children: Jacqueline Oelke and husband Orville, Nebraska City; Sharon Hoffman and husband Jerold, Lincoln; Patricia Lock and husband Charles, St. Louis; Father Michael E. Volkmer, Liberty, Mo.; Marylea van Daalen and husband Gianni, Moscow, Russia; Ronald R. Volkmer and wife Rosie, Omaha; Diane Meyer and husband Dean, Minnetonka, Minn.; Jon P. Volkmer and wife Janet, Telford, Pa., and Christopher J. Volkmer and wife Danette, Dallas; 21 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; other family members and many friends.
Besides her husbands, she was preceded by a sister, Rosa Volkmer.
Services will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 7, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Nebraska City. Father Michael Volkmer and Father Michael McCabe will celebrate Mass. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
A parish and Christian Mothers rosary will be recited Monday at 7 p.m. at Gude Mortuary followed by family greeting friends until 8 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or the Lourdes Endowment Fund.
Gude Mortuary, Nebraska City, is in charge of arrangements.

Edith J. Wurtele
Edith J. Wurtele, 88, died Sunday, July 22, 2007. She was born Aug. 8, 1918, at Yuma, Colo.
Surviving are her husband of 68 years, Lester “Bud,” Mesa, Ariz.; daughters, Carol J. Miller, Mesa, and Nancy J. Moore, Spokane, Wash.; grandchildren, Steve, Keith and Brent Moore, Jeff Clymens and Julie Fechner, all Spokane.
Services were Wednesday, July 25, at Mountain View Memorial Gardens Mortuary, Mesa, Ariz.

Shirley M. Frerichs
Shirley M. Frerichs, 81, died July 18, 2007, at Beaverton, Ore. She was born Aug. 28, 1925, at Nebraska City, daughter of John D. and Margery I. Stocker. She married John S. Frerichs March 17, 1951.
A 1943 Nebraska City High School graduate, Frerichs attended the University of Nebraska, where she was a member of KKG sorority. She and her husband settled on the West Coast after he served in the U.S. Navy. They moved to Beaverton, Ore., in 1987.
Frerichs was active in her church and library. She was an avid reader and bridge player.
Surviving are her husband, John; daughter-and son-in-law, Stacey and Kyle Arnold; son, Edward; grandson, Eric Hoss, all Beaverton, Ore.; sister and brother-in-law, Jeanette and Ed Ellis, Brock; and two nieces and three nephews.
Memorial service was Saturday, July 21, at Cooper Mountain Presbyterian Fellowship Church, Aloha, Ore.

Dearle ‘Hank’ Henry
Dearle “Hank” Henry, 68, of Talmage, died at Duff’s Nursing Home ��“ Nebraska City on Sept. 12, 2007. He was born Sept. 27, 1938 at Talmage to Merle and Letha (Jackson) Henry. He was married to Patricia Ruth of Macon, Mo., from 1962 to 1994. He married Patricia Shonerd in 1995. She survives him.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Henry of Talmage; children Kelley Gripe and husband Chris of Shawnee, Kan., Todd Henry and wife Val of St. Peters, Mo., and Andrea Henry of Heber Springs, Ark.; step-children Linda Tucker of Argos, Ind., John Bourne and wife Khris of Lincoln, David Bourne and wife Deena of Lexington, Ky., and Sondra Smale and husband Chad of Ely, Iowa; grandchildren Jordan and Mackenzie Gripe and Allysa and Karstin Henry; step-grandchildren Kandra Tucker, Justin Tucker, Taylor Bourne, Hannah Bourne, Michael Bourne, Kassi Bourne, Jared Bourne, Andrea Smale and Nathanael Smale; sisters Alene Landwehr of Dunbar and Phyllis Wellsandt of Talmage; brothers- in-law and their spouses Richard Shonerd, Robert and Marge Shonerd, and William and Judy Shonerd, all of Lincoln; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister, Carol.
He attended Otoe County Rural District 51 School and graduated from Talmage High School in 1956. He attended the University of Missouri and Peru State College. He served in the U.S. Army 101st Division from 1961 to 1963. He formerly lived in Illinois; Macon, Mo.; Thief River Falls, Minn.; Brock; and Branson, Mo., prior to returning to Talmage.
He worked for National Business Association Insurance as an agent and at Entire Recycling. He loved gardening, collecting farm toys and was a member of the Calvary Community Church in Nebraska City and was currently serving on the Talmage Village Board of Trustees.
His life’s work has included computer programming, farming, cattle, real estate broker and sales, auctioneer, toy museum owner in Branson, Mo., and insurance agent.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at Calvary Community Church in Nebraska City with David T. Bourne of the Immanual Baptist Church of Lexington, Ky., officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Talmage.Military rites will be performed by Talmage American Legion Post.
A memorial fund has been established.
Visitation is 1-9 p.m. Sunday at Marshall Funeral Chapel in Nebraska City with the family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m.
Marshall Funeral Chapel of Nebraska City is in charge of arrangements.

Laurence Edson Ford
Laurence Edson Ford, 90, former Hemingford resident, died May 23, 2003, in Temecula, California. He was born June 28, 1912 in Stamford, Nebraska.
Ed was raised in Hemingford, Nebraska. He left home in 1931 following high school graduation from St. Mary’s Academy in Rushville, Nebraska. He spent two years in the U.S. Army. He traveled throughout the west, in his early years. He met and married his wife of 63 years, Amolia (Mollie) Christina Berg, in Fresno, California, on May 5, 1939.

Joy Ushio
Joy Ushio, 89, of Alliance, NE, died Friday, June 27, 2003 at Box Butte General Hosital.
Joy T. Ushio was born June 6,1914 in Emmett, Idaho. He was the eldest son of Taka and Shigeo Ushio, immigrants from Fukuoka, Japan. The family worked in the laundry business in various towns in Idaho and Salt Lake City before moving to Alliance in 1930, when they purchased the Alliance Cleaners.
