Jack C. Petersen
Jack C. Petersen of Bennet, formerly of North Bend, died Jan. 1 in Lincoln after a brief battle with cancer. He was born Aug. 15, 1947, in North Bend to Oswalt “Ossie” and Bernice (Buchholtz) Petersen.
Jack was a 1966 graduate of North Bend High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1970 aboard the USS Ranger during the Vietnam war. Jack graduated from Milford Technical College in 1972 with a degree in welding. He lived a short time in Lincoln before moving to Bennet where he was employed by Judd Brothers Construction Company.
Jack married
Carol Zabava, they divorced. He later married
Sue Lowe.
Jack was a member of American Legion Post #340 of Morse Bluff.
He is survived by his wife, Sue; daughters, Jennifer (Marvin) Hestermann of Firth, Sara (John) Boldt of Omaha; step-daughter, Robin Lowe of Bennet; sisters Karen Legler of Morse Bluff, Connie (Bill) McCann of Columbus; and three grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life and gathering of family and friends was held Jan. 19 at Jack and Sue’s acreage near Bennet.

Eugene Emanuel
Eugene J. Emanuel of North Bend died Jan. 2 at the Parkview Home in Dodge.
He was born April 27, 1920, in the Pleasant Valley area of rural North Bend to Joseph and Helena (Becker)Emanuel. Eugene married
Elsie Vacha on Jan. 6, 1944, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Dodge. The couple farmed and had a dairy herd three miles west of Webster until retiring in 1987 and moving to North Bend. Elsie died Jan. 25, 2011.
Eugene was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend and a charter member of the Knights of Columbus Council #3736 of North Bend. He was a member of the American Dairy Association.
Eugene is survived by sons Wayne (Maria) Emanuel of Beemer, Joseph (Bonita) Emanuel of Hartington, Eugene (Kim) Emanuel of Monticello, Minn., Kevin (Kate) Emanuel of Osceola, Iowa, Chad (Cheryl) Emanuel of Waukee, Iowa, and Roch (Diane) Emanuel of North Bend; daughters, Elizabeth (Tony) Wiese and Sandra (Leo) Blaha, all of Dodge, Dorothy (Leo) Showers of Lincoln, Mary (Dean) Von Seggern of Scribner, and Denise (Glen) Temple of Ottumwa, Iowa; sister-in-law Mildred Emanuel of North Bend; brother-in-law Dwain Molle of West Point; 30 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Eugene is the last of ten Emanuel siblings that included brothers Francis, Joseph, Ralph, Herman and Vincent Emanuel; and sisters Phyllis Baumert, Edith Emanuel, Mary Scheppers and Victoria Molle.
Funeral mass was Jan. 5 at St. Charles Catholic Church in North Bend with Don Cleary officiating. Burial was at St. Mary’s Ridgeley Catholic cemetery near Scribner. Memorials may be given to St. Charles Catholic Church and St. Mary’s Ridgeley Cemetery.

Mabel Morse
Mabel E. Morse of Morse Bluff passed away Feb. 10 at Dunklau Gardens in Fremont.
Mabel was born on May 31, 1921, to Louis and Emma (Placek) Stranik. She graduated North Bend High School in 1939. Mabel taught in the rural schools of Schuyler and Rescue and attended Midland Lutheran College. She married
Duane Morse on Sept. 22, 1954, in Crested Butte, Colo.
Mabel and Duane moved quite frequently due to his job. She had several job positions ranging from teaching to war plane production, teaching at California Military Academy, homemaker and accounting. She retired in 1986 from the Safeway Division Office. Mabel then worked as a greeter at Wal-Mart from 1989 to 2013.
She was a member of ZCBJ Lodge #9 in Morse Bluff, and enjoyed the casinos, gardening and traveling.
Mabel is survived by her son Greg Morse of Morse Bluff; sister-in-law Rosie Stranik; nephew Robert Stranik; cousins Tom, Jim, and Maribeth Stranik.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister Leona Fencl; brothers Louis, Raymond, and Lumir Stranik.
Her funeral service is at 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 14 at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend. Rev. Scott Jensen will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Feb. 13 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Prague National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family.
Jay Faist
Jay D. Faist, age 54 years, of Beatrice passed away Jan. 13 at Beatrice Community Hospital. He was born March 25, 1964, in Fremont to Gary and Lois (Rood) Faist.
Jay grew up in Scribner until the age of 5. He then resided in several places including Kearney, Hastings, Fremont and Norfolk, and in January 1978, he settled in Beatrice.
He is survived by his parents, Gary and Lois Faist of Fremont; brothers Kelly (Monica) Faist, Matthew Faist all of Wayne; sister Michelle (Bryon) Page of Omaha; aunts Karen (George) Robertson of Mead, Judy Rood of Ashland, Mo. and nephews, Joshua and Caleb Page.
Jay was preceded in death by his grandparents.
A memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m., Jan. 16., at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in North Bend. Father Keith Rezac will officiate. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Memorial Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to The Beatrice State Development Center.
Dennis Bailey, December 30, 2008, age 70
Funeral services for Dennis E. Bailey were Dec. 30 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Schuyler, with Vicar Bill Mattfeld officiating. Burial was at Schuyler cemetery with military honors by Hespen-Mitchell Post 4836 of the V.F.W. and McLeod Post #47 of the American Legion.
Dennis was born May 28, 1938, in Schuyler to Morris E. and Geraldine (Douglass) Bailey. He graduated from Schuyler High School in 1956. He served in the United States Navy from 1957-1961.
On Feb.14, 1970, he married
Marjorie A. Schulz at Trinity Lutheran Church. Dennis worked as a Police Officer for the City of Schuyler 1961-1966, owned and operated Bailey Redi-Mix, and then ran Bailey Digging until retiring in 2000. Dennis died Friday, Dec. 26, at the Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Lifetime member of the Schuyler Legion and VFW,
and was past member of the Schuyler Grade School Board.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Marjorie of Schuyler, daughter Michelle (Darrell) Parks, Prairie Village, Kan., son Todd (Shari) Bailey of Schuyler, one brother Gerald(Gwen) Bailey of Overland Park, Kan., two granddaughters. Obit dated Dec. 31, 2008
Ronald W. Steenblock, December 23, 2008, age 55
Funeral services for Ronald William Steenbock were held Dec. 23, 2008, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Schuyler, with Jerry L. Kracl officiating. Burial was at the Schuyler Cemetery.
Ronald was born Feb. 11, 1953 in Council Bluffs, IA. to Lester W. and Arlu (Koenig) Steenbock. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1972.
On June 17, 1983, he married
Nancy Nielsen in Omaha.
He had served as President of the Schuyler Chamber of Commerce and Church Council of St. John’s Lutheran.
Ronald is survived by his wife Nancy, daughters, Brook Steenbock, Omaha, Niki Nielsen, Denise (Bryan) Spilinek, both of Fremont; son Shannon (Mandy) Steenbock of Omaha; four grandchildren; sisters Colleen (Terry) Donaldson, Lockport, Ill., Karon (Gene) Christiansen and Sharon (Bill), Fitzgerald, of Persia, Iowa, Diane (Al) Kuta and Yvonne (Patrick) Tooley, of Columbus. Myrna (Karsk) Chambers, December 11, 2008, age 93
Myrna Karsk Chambers was born near North Bend on Dec. 6, 1915, to John and Selma Karsk and died Dec. 11, 2008 at a retirement community in Newport News, Va. Myrna graduated from North Bend High School in 1933 and taught several years in rural schools, including District #56, where she had attended as a child. Later, she attended a business college and then worked as a secretary in the War Department.
Myrna married
Ralph L. Chambers, a Tech Sgt. in the U.S. Army in l943 and when the war ended, she left civil service and became a full time mother. Sons, Larry, of Florence, Ore., and Terry, of Anchorage, Alaska, survive as well as her husband, grandchildren, nephews and nieces and sister-in-law, Vernelle Karsk Werblow of Fremont.
Her life was celebrated Dec. 18, 2008 at the Smith Funeral Home in Newport News. Burial will be in Arlington National cemetery on Jan. 7, 2009. Obit dated Jan. 7, 2009
Jean M. Tapster, December 2, 2008, age 88
Jean Margaret Tapster died at Merrick Manor in Fremont on Dec. 2, 2008. Jean was born Aug. 13, 1920, in North Bend to John and Emily (Collom) Tapster. Her family had lived in North Bend since 1894, where her father owned the Tapster Drug Store in downtown North Bend from 1904 until 1949.
Jean was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and the church circle and an over 50 year member of Ruth Chapter #119, Order of Eastern Star.
She is survived by Dick and Betty Jurgens of North Bend, Richard, Diana and Steven Novak or Gretna, William Novak of Vanderberg Air Force Base, Calif., Leroy and Christine Bax of Omaha, Brian and Nathan Jurgens of Papillion.
The funeral was Dec. 5. at the United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Maetta Snyder officiating. Burial was at the Woodland cemetery in North Bend.
Memorials are suggested for the United Presbyterian Church, North Bend Area Senior Center and the Fremont Area Medical Center.

Dorothy G. (Newberrey) Eaton, November 30, 2008, age 68
Dorothy G. Eaton of Columbus died Nov. 30, 2008, at Columbus Community Hospital. She was born Jan. 24, 1940, in Cumberland, Md., to Willliam and Wilma (Schaefer) Newberrey. She graduated from Franklin High School in Reisterstown, Md., and Central Community College in Columbus, and passed her CPA exam.
In 1958 Dorothy moved to Nebraska, living in Morse Bluff, Fremont, North Bend, returning to Maryland, then back to Schuyler, moving to Omaha in 1990, and Columbus in 2004. She ran Eaton Tax Service since 1971 and worked for the City of Omaha and account firms at places she lived.
On Nov. 24, 1957, Dorothy married
Benjamin F. Eaton at Westminster, Md. He died Oct. 28, 2005.
Dorothy was a member of FOE Auxillary Aerie 3568 at Schuyler, Order of Eastern Star in Columbus, Daughters of The Nile in Omaha. She was a former member of the Amercian Business Women’s Assoc., Toastmasters in Omaha, Assoc. of Government Accountants, holding several offices; Volunteers Intervening for Equaity (VIE) conservatorship program and Senior Health Insurance information Program (SHIIP). Dorothy was a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Government Financial Manager.
Survivors include sons Ben Eaton Jr. of Lincoln, Richard (Malveen) Eaton, Martin (Diane) Eaton, all of Columbus, Gary (Tina) Eaton of Schuyler; daughter Cindy (Orlando) Stevenson of Columbus; sisters Carole Hofmeister, Wilma (Bruce) Lippy, Kay (Sam) Venri, all in Maryland; 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Dec. 4 at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend with Darrell Buck and the Rev. Celeste Norman officiating. There will be visitation two hours before the service at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Killan cemetery near Morse Bluff.
Memorials are suggested for the American Heart Assoc., or American Cancer Society.

Doris E. Moser
Doris E. Moser of Fremont died Nov. 24 at Fremont Area Medical Center. She was born Sept. 22, 1931, in Wahoo to John and Wilma (Masek) Wotipka.
Doris grew up in rural Wahoo and was a 1949 graduate of Wahoo High School.
On Feb. 18, 1950, Doris married
Edward L. Moser at Wahoo. He died Feb. 20, 2008. The couple moved to Cedar Bluffs in 1953 where they owned and operated the Moser Funeral Home. In 1966 they moved to Fremont and established Moser Memorial Chapel.
Doris was a licensed Funeral Director for 50 years. The couple also owned and operated the Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend and the Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington.
Doris was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, St. Patrick’s Women, Nebraska Funeral Directors Association, National Funeral Directors Association, Laureate Zeta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and former member of Altrusa International.
Survivors include daughters Mary (Robert) Bodell, Monica (Mark) Coulter; son John (Julie) Moser, all of Fremont; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral is 10:30 a.m. Nov. 29 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. in Fremont. There will be a rosary vigil service Nov. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at Moser Memorial Chapel, Fremont. Visitation will be Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, with the family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Saturday one hour prior to the service.
Burial will be at Calvary cemetery in Fremont.
Memorials are suggested for Calvary cemetery Endowment and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
