John Murville Mundy, April 27, 2008, age 82
John Murville Mundy of Santa Clara, Calif., died April 27, 2008.
John was born June 6, 1925, in North Bend to Dan and Eva (Rexroth) Mundy. He was raised by his grandparents, Peter and Anis Munday. John joined the Navy after graduating from North Bend High School in 1942. After discharge from the military, he remained in California, working for Armour Foods for 36 years.
Survivors include his wife Joyce, son Donald, daughters Carol, Lynn and Katie, six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, all of California; cousins James Kruger of Omaha, Evelyn Farris of North Bend.

Don Zima, David City, Dec. 18, 2009, age 76
Don Zima died Dec. 18 at the age of 76. His funeral was Dec. 22 at Kracl Funeral Chapel in David City with lay minister Jerry Kracl officiating. Burial was at David City cemetery with military honors by VFW Post 5814 and Post 125 of the American Legion.
Memorials have been established for American Legion Post 125 and the David City Volunteer Fire Department
Donald James Zima was born Dec. 6, 1933, in Abie to James and Laura (Krenk) Zima. He graduated from David City High School in 1952. Don served in the U.S. Army.
On Dec. 2, 1967, Don married
Margaret Krumbach at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby. He was a lifelong farmer near Abie and Linwood, retiring in 2000. He was a member of the American Legion Post #125 in David City.
Don is survived by his wife Margaret of David City, daughters Joan (Scott) Leu of Omaha and Donna Zima of Wrentham, Mass., brother Adrian (Marlene) Zima of Schuyler, three grandchildren; Abbi, Conner and Caitlin Leu, all of Omaha. Obit dated Dec. 23, 2009
Rev. Orin C. Graff, Lincoln, Dec. 17, 2009, age 90
The Rev. Orin C. Graff of Lincoln, passed away on December 17 at Eastmont Towers surrounded by family. He served as the pastor of the United Presbyterian Church in North Bend from 1975 to 1986.
He was born to Raymond Chester and Ida C. (Hanson) Graff on Sept. 6, 1919, in Bancroft.
On June 1, 1942, he married
Dolores Larson, who survives him. He is also survived by sons David (Cheryl), Baileyville, Ill., Paul (Loris), Casper, Wyo.; Steve (Ann), Sedalia, Mo.; and Philip of Lincoln; daughters Mary Graff, Deborah (Gary) Kilian, all of Lincoln; Elizabeth (Sam) Shotts, Highland Village, Texas; 20 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; brothers Curtis Graff of Dalhart, Texas, Lyle Graff of Laverne, Minn.
Orin was ordained as a minister in the Presbyterian Church, serving in this capacity for over 60 years in Nebraska, Illinois, Missouri, and Iowa churches. He founded Cleveland Bible Camp near Stuart.
A memorial service for Orin was held Dec. 22 at Eastmont Towers, Lincoln, with the Rev. J.P. Carlson, officiating. Internment will be at Bancroft cemetery at a later date. The family suggests a gift to the Eastmont Towers Bed Replacement Fund in lieu of flowers. Obit dated Dec. 23, 2009
Sophie (Jecha) Odvody, Wahoo, Dec. 15, 2009, age 91
Sophie H. Odvody of Wahoo died at her son’s Morse Bluff home on Dec. 15. She was born May 8, 1918, to Frank and Mary (Stanek) Jecha in Brainard.
On Jan. 9, 1940, Sophie married
Ernest M. Odvody. The couple farmed south of Morse Bluff until retiring and moving to Wahoo in 1985. Ernest died Jan. 16, 1996.
Sophie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wahoo and Special Friends Cancer Survivors.
She is survived by son Milton (Marilyn) Odvody of Morse Bluff; daughter Mildred (Marvin) Fujan of Wahoo; sister-in-law Dorothy Jecha of Schuyler; grandchildren Carolyn (Allan) Beethe, Cheryl (Rob) Brennan, Marie (Jim) Schmitt; eight great-grandchildren: Andrew, Carrie and Ashley Beethe, Sophie and Elizabeth Brennan, Shelby, Naomi, and Dan Schmitt.
The funeral was Dec. 19 at First Presbyterian Church in Wahoo with the Rev. Patrick Marshall officiating. Burial was at Sunrise cemetery in Wahoo.

Mildred B Bignell, Cortez, Colo., Nov. 22, 2009, age 91
Mildred B. Bignell of Cortez, Colo., died Nov. 22. She was born May 17, 1918, in North Platte to George and Sadie (Tetterton) Star.
On May 16, 1936, Mildred married
James F. Bignell at Julesburg, Colo. He died March 23, 2001.
Survivors include her son James W. (Ruth) Bignell of Manchos, Colo.; granddaughter Kristy Fulghum; three great-grandchildren; siblings Marge Dougherty of Fairfax, Va., and George Star of North Platte.
Graveside services will be 1:45 p.m. Dec. 2 at Fleming cemetery in Morse Bluff with the Rev. J.O. Baumgartner officiating.

Daniel M. Post, Schuyler, Nov. 15, 2009, age 43
Daniel Matthew Post of rural Schuyler was killed in an automobile accident on Nov. 15 three miles west of Schuyler on US Highway 30.
Dan was born July 24, 1963, in Zumbrota, Minn., to Walter and Joanne (Bright) Post. He graduated from Zumbrota High School and attended a technical school.
On May 20, 1994, he married
Carla Koepsell in Columbus. They lived west of Schuyler and Dan worked in maintenance at Cargill Meat Solutions in Schuyler.
Dan is survived by his wife, Carla; daughters Kyla and Kerrie Post; step-son Brandon Koepsell, all of Schuyler; two brothers, Dennis (Molly) Post of Mazzepa, Minn. and Dale (Barb) Post of Zumbrota, Minn.
A memorial service was held Nov. 17 at Kracl Funeral Chapel with Jerry L. Kracl, speaker. Committal will be in Minnesota at a later date.
Joyce (Fox) Houfek, Schuyler, Nov. 15, 2009, age 84
Funeral services for Joyce E. Houfek were held Nov. 19 at Kracl Funeral Chapel with Jerry L. Kracl speaking. A private committal will be held later. Memorials are suggested for the Colfax County Senior Citizens Center or St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Joyce Houfek, of Schuyler, died Nov. 15 at the Golden Living Center in Schuyler. She was born Oct. 16, 1925, in Chambers, Nebraska to George Henry and Helen Mabel (Butterfield) Fox.
On Oct. 16, 1947, she married
Edward L. Houfek in South Dakota. They lived in Schuyler and Joyce worked at Kruger Grocery and later for Dale Electronics for 14 years. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, the Women of the ELCA, Schuyler Eagles Club and volunteered at the Colfax County Senior Citizens Center in Schuyler.
Joyce is survived by daughter Bonnie Salak of Columbus; sons Bernard Houfek of Tennessee, Bud (Penny) Houfek of Schuyler and Bob (Valeria) Houfek of Sioux Falls, S.D.; brother, Wallace (Shirley) Fox, Huntsville, Ala.; nine grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Duane E. Hartmann, Fremont, Nov. 8, 2009, age 85
Duane E. Hartmann of Fremont died on Nov. 8. He was born Sept. 12, 1924, to Earl and Verna (Dunker) Hartmann of North Bend.
Duane graduated from North Bend High School in 1942 and entered the Army. He served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne, seeing action in the European theater.
After his discharge from the military in Dec. 1945 Duane attened Midland College, graduating in 1948. He was a teacher, principal, and coach at Snyder High School until 1957. He moved with his famiy to Oregon where he attended the University of Oregon and began teaching at Lebanon, Ore., where he spent the next 26 years in the high school business dept.
On June 15, 1947, Duane married
Ruby Schmale. They moved back to Fremont in 1998.
Survivors include his wife, son Wayne Hartmann of Keizer, Ore., daughters Cynthia (Stanley) Tarr of Covington, Wash., Brenda (Robert) Duran of Antlers, Okla.; seven grandchildren, seven great-grand-children; sister Doris (Arnold) Rector of Fremont; sisters-in-law Laverne Schmale of Schuyler and Carol Lewis of Fremont.
The funeral was Nov. 11 at Salem Lutheran Church in Frmeont with the Rev. Michael Thomas and the Rev. Robert Duran officiaitng. Militay rites were performed by Fremont Honor Guard of VFW Post 854 and American Legion Post 20.
There will be a memorial service at a later date in Fremont.
Memorials have been established for Salem Lutheran Church, Odyssey Hospice and Alzehimer’s Association.
Willis H. Sellhorn, Lincoln, Nov. 1, 2009, age 84
Willis H. Sellhorn died Nov. 1 at his home in Lincoln.
Willis was born June 20, 1925, to Herman and Mary (Watt) Sellhorn of North Bend. He graduated from North Bend High School in 1943 and joined the Army. After his discharge he attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He graduated from a mortuary science school in St. Louis and worked with his father at Sellhorn Funeral Home in North Bend for several years.
On Feb. 6, 1948, he married
Virginia L. Lorent in Washington, D.C. She died March 7, 2006.
In 1950 he began working for OPPD, a job that took him to Ralston and Tecumseh before retiring in 1987. He then lived in California until returning to Nebraska in Oct. 2009 to live in Lincoln.
He is survived by sons Mark (Barbara) Sellhorn of Lincoln, Brent (Donna) Sellhorn of Lindsborg, Kan.; daughters Susan Puchalla of Omaha, Janet (Bill) Shelly of Brea, Calif., and Mary (Brice) Moeller of Columbia, Mo.; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and sister Phebe Rehbein of Fremont.
Willis was a member of North Bend Masonic Lodge 119 and North Bend VFW Post 8223.
Grave side services will be Saturday, Nov. 14, 10:30 a.m., at Woodland cemetery with military honors conducted by VFW Post 8223, AmVets Post 20 and Morse Bluff American Legion Post 340. Obit dated Nov. 11, 2009
