Delva Rickett

SSC resident

Delva Marie Rickett, 91, of South Sioux City died Saturday, march 27, 2004 at a South Sioux City nursing home.

Services will be 10 a.m., Thursday, April 1, 2004 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Chuck Rager officiating. Burial will be in Silver Ridge Cemetery in rural Ponca, Neb.

Delva was born March 1, 1913, on a farm near Newcastle, Neb., the daughter of Floyd C. and Mary J. (LeStrange) Curry. She attended country schools to the eighth grade and graduated from Newcastle Public School in 1931. After graduating she worked in private homes taking care of mothers and newborn babies under Dr. Richards. She married Lawrence W. Rickett Feb. 21, 1935, in the Presbyterian Church in Albion, Neb. They lived on two different rented farms before buying their own farm in 1942 in the Newcastle and Ponca, Neb. area. They moved to South Sioux City in 1972. She was then employed at Ben Franklin Store for 10 years before retiring. They were members of the United Methodist Church of Christ in Newcastle for many years. After moving to South Sioux City the couple joined St. Paul United Methodist Church. She was also a former member of the Rebecca Lodge in Newcastle. Her husband Lawrence died Nov. 25, 1998 in South Sioux City.

Survivors include a daughter, Relda and her husband Lloyd Trout of St. Helena, Neb.; a brother Rexal and his wife Catherine Curry of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister-in-law Viola Curry of Monroe, Wash.; nine step grandchildren; 16 step great-grandchildren; five step great-great-grandchildren; two nieces, Rozlyn Anderson of Salina, Kan., Janet Willis of Monroe, Wash.; and three nephews, Gary Curry of Monroe, Wash., Paul Bisel of Greeley, Colo. And John Curry of Phoenix, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son C. Oscar Rickett, a brother, Cleone Curry and a sister Veryl Anfinson.

Pallbearers will be Dennis and Dean Rickett, Darrel Rahn, Robert, Donald and Harold Curry.

Martha Simons

South Sioux resident

Martha Lois Simons, 83, of South Sioux City died unexpectedly Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at her residence.

Services were Saturday at First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Karen Kaye officiating. Burial was in the Dakota City Cemetery.

Martha was born Jan. 23, 1921 in Walnut, Neb. the daughter of Earl and Anna (Boelter) McElhose. She married William V. Simons Aug. 21, 1949 in Creighton, Neb. She taught school in a one-room school outside of Creighton. She was a dental technician in Flandreau, S.D., was a retail sales clerk at various stores and was a devoted housewife and mother. The couple moved to South Sioux City in 1971.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church and a former member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary.

Survivors include two sons and their wives: Tom and Chris Simons of South Sioux City, Brad and Pam Simons of Littleton, Colo., three daughters and their husbands: Marlene and Dennis Cole of Gary, S.D., Jeanne and Bill Moscoff and Nancy and Leo Ziervogel, all of Milwaukee, Wis., a brother Gordon and his wife Vlasta McElhose of Verdigre, Neb., five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William on Dec. 28, 1976, in Sioux City, two brothers: Walter and John and a sister Violet.

Pallbearers were Greg Metz, Jason Cook, Trent Ziervogel, Todd Glasser, Randy Kratke and Joe Elmore.

Amy Hudspeth

Dakota City resident

Amy Michiko Hudspeth, 70, of Dakota City died Friday, March 26, 2004 at a South Sioux City nursing home.

Services were March 30 at Salem Lutheran Church with the Rev. Karen Kaye officiating. Burial was in the city cemetery at Onawa, Iowa.

Mrs. Hudspeth was born Jan. 29, 1934 in Yokohama, Japan the daughter of Kuniichi and Chimae (Matsunaga) Maekawa. She married Gerald Leon Hudspeth Sept. 3, 1954 in Yokohama, Japan. She came to the United States May 27, 1958 with her husband and two sons. In 1962 they made Ute, Iowa their home while living there she was a seamstress. She received her citizenship April 29, 1965. In 1972 she moved to Onawa, Iowa where she continued to sew. She has been a resident of Dakota City for 25 years. She was employed at IBP for 18 years, retiring in 1997, but continued to work part-time at Sears.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Onawa, Iowa and attended the Salem Lutheran Church after moving to Dakota City. She was a very loving mother, enjoyed cooking and sewing, gardening and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Jim and Sharon Hudspeth of Sioux City, George and Emily Hudspeth of Paducah, Ky.; two daughters and their husbands, Mickey and Daryl McCaffrey and Jeri and Jamie Bowman all of South Sioux City; one brother, Norio Maekawa from Yamato, Kanagawa, Japan; seven grandchildren, Regina Ronfelt, Heather Bily, Joe Hudspeth, A.J. and Amanda McCaffrey, Brittany and Breana Bowman; two step grandchildren Barry and Jessica Miller; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Nobuyuki and one sister Katuko Meadows.

Pallbearers were Jamie Bowman, Daryl McCaffrey, A.J. McCaffrey, Joe Hudspeth, Barry Miller, Mike Shanahan and Jim Peterson.

Edna Ida Linafelter

30-year area teacher

Edna Ida Linafelter, 95, of Omaha died March 29, 2004.

Visitation will be held this evening (Thursday) from 4-8 p.m. at Boyd Braman Funeral Home, 1702 N. 72nd Street in Omaha. Family will be in attendance from 6-8 p.m. Prayer service will be held Friday, April 2 at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with burial at Forest Lawn Cemetery immediately following.

Edna was born in Homer on March 12, 1909. She married the late Elmer Linafelter on March 1, 1927. She was a teacher in Dixon and Dakota counties for over 30 years before retiring in Omaha.

She is survived by a sister Hazel Knap, a son Donald Linafelter and daughter Mrs. Gerald Pridie (Marjorie), seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alva and Emma Trask, sister Ethel Cooper and brothers Elmer and Alva Jr. and son-in-law Gerald Pridie.

The family asks that memorials be given to Odyssey Hospice, Omaha.

Letha Mohrhauser

SSC resident

Letha B. Mohrhauser, 72 of South Sioux City died Saturday, March 27, 2004 at a Sioux City hospital.

Services were March 31, 2004 at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home with the Rev. Chuck Rager officiating. Burial was in the Dakota City Cemetery.

Letha was born Feb. 29, 1932, in Hawk Springs, Wyo. the daughter of Floyd M. and Jessie L. (Gwin) Hover. She married Edwin G. Mohrhauser Feb. 3, 1973 in South Sioux City. She was employed at IBP and later was a nurses aide at Green Acres Nursing Home.

She was Methodist.

Survivors include two sons, Ricky Chamberlain of Marshfield, Wisc., Rodney and his wife Kristen Herron of South Sioux City; three daughters, Sherry Broadway of Wichita, Kan., LaRae Chamberlain of San Diego, Calif., Jacqueline Chamberlain of Wichita, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Edwin on Nov. 10, 1990 in Hubbard, two sons, Melvin and Johnny Chamberlain, three brothers, Floyd George, Darrell and Billy Hover, her twin sister Retha Carmen and one grandchild.

Pallbearers were Kevin Rogers, Dustin Chamberlain, Gary Powell, Randy Walsh, Ron Polkinghorn and Dale Cadwallder.

Marisa Jo Goethals

1996 SSC High graduate

Marisa Jo Goethals, 27, of Sioux City passed away Monday, March 15, 2004 at Rochester Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn. after a lengthy illness.

Services were Friday at St. Michael Catholic Church in South Sioux City with the Rev. Daniel Wittrock officiating. Burial was in the Dakota City Cemetery.

Marisa Jo was born Nov. 23, 1976 in Vermillion, S.D., the daughter of Edward L. and Marilee D. (Kesselring) Goethals. She was an active member of the South Sioux City band and flag squad. She graduated from South Sioux City High School in 1996.

She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in South Sioux City.

Survivors include her parents of Dakota City, a very special friend, Raymond Spier of Sioux City, a sister Alicia Simonson of Dakota City, a niece Alyssa Jo Simonson, maternal grandmother Betty Kesselring of Dakota City, paternal grandmother Frances Goethals of Butte, Neb., many aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her grandfathers and two cousins.

Pallbearers were Michael McNeil, Dennis Shaver, Richard Goethals, Gene Boerger, Ronald and Russell Spier.

The family honored Marisa Jo’s concern and donated her heart and lungs for medical research in primary pulmonary hypertension.

Treva J. DeGraaff

Hubbard resident

Treva J. DeGraaff, 82, of rural Hubbard passed away Saturday, March 20, 2004 at a Sioux City hospital.

Services were Tuesday at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Dakota City with the Rev. Karen Kaye officiating. Burial was in the Dakota City Cemetery.

Treva was born May 20, 1921 in rural Homer, the daughter of Carl L. and Mary E. (Churchill) Chapman. As a child she moved with her family to Hubbard. She graduated from Hubbard High School. She married Henry DeGraaff Aug. 18, 1940 in Mapleton. The couple first settled near Mapleton, Iowa and farmed in partnership with Henry’s sister and her husband who was Treva’s uncle. In 1942, they moved to their present location four and one-half miles northeast of Hubbard and farmed for 25 years before going into the egg business. They retired in 1976.

She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and the Birthday Club in Jackson. She enjoyed reading, gardening, baking and time with her family.

Survivors include her husband Henry, three daughters and their husbands: Bonnie and Fay Warren of Fullerton, Calif., Laurette and Don Stolze of Thurston, Susan and Chuck Twyford of South Sioux City, a brother Jerry and his wife Bessie Chapman of South Sioux City, two sisters-in-law Bonnie and Betty Chapman, seven grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, very special friends Bob and Swanee Kacena of Hubbard, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Treva was preceded in death by her parents, a son Michael, three brothers: Don, Dick and Kay, a sister Fern Knudsen and two grandsons.

Pallbearers were Bob Blessing, Bob Knudsen, Mark and Wayne Chapman, Jeff Bartels and Kenny Beerman.

Clifford Gotch

Allen resident

Clifford R. Gotch, 79, of Allen died at his winter home in Green Valley, Ariz. on March 5, 2004.

Services were Friday at First Lutheran Church in Allen with Pastor Karen Tjarks officiating. Inurnment was at Eastview Cemetery at Allen.

Clifford was born Oct. 3, 1924 at Waterbury to Roy E. and Leona M. (Brownell) Gotch. He was a graduate of Allen Consolidated Schools in 1941. Clifford married Rose Von Minden on Oct. 11, 1944 at First Lutheran Church in Allen. The couple farmed north of Allen. Cliff was appointed as agent for State Farm Insurance Company in 1961 and retired from service in February 1992.

Clifford served on the Galena Township Board, the Allen Rural Fire District and the Dixon County Farm Bureau. He was elected to the Allen City Council, serving as chairman for one term. He was a member and past Master of Golden Rule Masonic Lodge #236 Abu Bekr Shrine and Cornhusker Shrine. Cliff was a charter member of the Safari Club in Green Valley. He was a member of First Lutheran Church of Allen and served on its church council and was an associate member of Desert Hills Lutheran Church in Green Valley.

Clifford and Rose moved into Allen in 1976. They have been making Green Valley their winter home for the past 15 years. Cliff most enjoyed and loved his family and friends at his home.

Survivors include his wife Rose, a son Dwight and his wife Ronnie of Allen, a granddaughter Amy and husband Jon Rahn of Pella, Iowa, a grandson Jeffrey and wife Deb of Papillion, Neb., five great grandchildren: Allicia, Mackenzi and Tori Gotch, Andrew and Alaina Rahn. He is also survived by one sister Ruth Jensen of Dakota City and a brother Bill and his wife Myrna Gotch of South Sioux City, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Clifford was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Joan.

Arnold Richards

Married in Dakota City

Arnold B. “Arnie” Richards, 80, of Sioux City died Sunday, March 21, 2004 at a South Sioux City nursing home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home with the Rev. Marvin Mueller, visitation pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating. Visitation is at the funeral home from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Military graveside services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Richards was born April 1, 1923 in Cando, N.D., the son of Frederick and Agatha (Zurkowski) Richards. He graduated from Cando High School. He joined the Air Force in 1941 and was a commissioned navigator when he was honorably discharged in 1945. He married Charlotte I. Armbright Nov. 29, 1943 at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Dakota City. He was employed for O.N. Knerl and Sons as a mobile bulk agent for 37 years.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sioux City for 57 years, American Legion Edward H. Monahan Post 64 for 59 years, Fraternal Order of Eagles #77 and the Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte, two daughters: Marsha M. and Peter Baumann of Greensboro, N.C., and Barbara L. Risting of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a daughter in law Marian Richards of South Sioux City; two brothers: Lawrence of Springfield, Mo. and George of St. Paul, Minn.; a sister Freda Bolmer of Seattle, Wash.; five grandchildren: Tammi and Todd Schweiger, Melissa and Jerry Anderson, all of Sioux City, Michele and Brian Sandberg of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Rebecca and Sarah Baumann of Greensboro, N.C.; and six great grandchildren: Andrew, Katelynn, Paige, Dalton, Bronte and Bryce.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Dennis C. Richards, two brothers: Roy and Freddie; and four sisters: Elda, Nancy, Martha and Gladys.
