Edna Holstein, 96
Edna Holstein, 96, of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Fremont, died Saturday, July 18, 1998, in Kansas City.
Services were Tuesday, July 21 at First United Methodist Church in Blair. Rev. A.K. Saul officiated. Burial was in the Blair Cemetery.
Edna Caroline Hovendick Holstein was born on July 2, 1902, to William and Abigail (Rosenbaum) Hovendick at Herman. On Feb. 2, 1922, she married
Dewey Holstein in Omaha. Mr. Holstein preceded her in death. She worked at Schweser'; s Department Store for many years. She lived in Washington County and Dodge County prior to moving to Kansas City.
She was a member of the Fremont Methodist Church and Trinity Methodist Church in Kansas City. She was also a member of Degree of Honor Fraternal Association.
She is survived by her daughter, Ruby Holstein of Kansas City, Mo.; one sister, Edyth Atwood of Blair and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey; her parents; three brothers, Walter, Edward and Bill; and four sisters, Mabel Lindenmeir, Myrtle Christensen, Pearl Kimbro and an infant sister.

Bernadine A. Root, 92
Bernadine A. Root, 92, of Aitkin, Minn., formerly of Blair, died on Thursday, July 16, 1998, at the Aicota Health Center in Aitkin.
Services were Monday, July 20 at St. John'; s Lutheran Church in Aitkin Rev. David Becker officiated. Burial was in the Valley cemetery in Shakopee, Minn.
Bernadine A. Anderson was born Jan. 13, 1906, in Chicago, Ill., to Oscar and Amelia (Bleich) Anderson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She moved with her family from Chicago to Burt, Iowa, and then to Eau Claire, Wis. She attended schools in Eau Claire. She married
Frank Root in Eau Claire on Aug. 28, 1982. They moved to New Richland, Minn., where they lived until moving to Aitkin in 1950. They lived in Blair for about 10 years where they were administrators for the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home.
She was a member of St. John'; s Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aid, the quilting club, the Bible study and was a former Sunday school teacher for more than 25 years.
She is survived by a daughter, Carol Shields of Aitkin; a son and daughter - in - law, Gordon and Jean Root of Aitkin; a sister, Esther Gronfor of Shakopee, Minn., two granddaughters and two great - granddaughters; several nieces and nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, in 1971; her parents; and two brothers, Irving and William.

Leona Wilson, 91
Leona Wilson, 91, of Columbus, formerly of the Herman area, died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, at Columbus Community Hospital.
Services were Saturday, July 18, 1998, at Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus. Rev. Michael V. Klatt and Rev. Ernest G. Smith officiated. Burial was in the Roselawn cemetery in Columbus.
Leona Borgelt Wilson was born Feb. 25, 1907, at Dodge to Fred and Augusta (Werbelow) Borgelt. She attended parochial school in Snyder. On Sept. 20, 1933, she married
W. Martin Wilson at St. Peter'; s Lutheran Church in Snyder. They lived and farmed in many areas including Herman, Palmer, Murdock and Louisville. She worked for many years in Fremont as a beautician. She moved to Columbus in 1974.
In 1993, she received the Resident Volunteer of the Year Award at the Colonial Manor in Clarkson. In 1994, she received the Resident Volunteer Award for the Region V of Beverly Enterprises. In 1996, she received the Resident of the Month Award at the Columbus Manor.
She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus and the Ladies Aid in Palmer.
She is survived by two daughters, Carol Bignell and Jan Cook, both of Columbus; one sister, Laura Kohlmeyer of Tavaras, Fla., six grandchildren and 15 great - grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Martin; her parents; five brothers and four sisters.
Memorials are suggested to Peace Lutheran Church or the donor'; s choice.

Carolyn Ann Standen, 56
Carolyn Ann (Stokes) Standen, 56, of Omaha died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998, at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Blair. Burial will be in the Herman Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Campbell - Aman Funeral Home.
Carolyn Ann Stokes was born on Aug. 16, 1942, in Blair to Earl and Doris (Christiansen) Stokes. She was baptized at an early age and later was confirmed at the Methodist Church in Walthill. Her family moved from Walthill in 1953. She attended Blair High School and graduated in 1960. She worked for Kelly Ryan Equipment Company as a secretary. She moved to Omaha in 1962 and was employed at several places, including the Nebraska Credit Union League and Ramada Inn. On Aug. 16, 1964, she married
Daryl Jack Standen in Blair.
She is survived by her daughter and son - in - law, Kimberly Joy and Jon Arrington of Omaha, two grandchildren, Nickolas and Mikayla; and her parents, Earl and Doris Stokes of Blair.

Wade E. Sheppard, Jr., 76
Wade E. Sheppard, Jr., 76, of Fort Calhoun, died on Thursday, Aug. 13, 1998, at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha.
Services were Monday, Aug. 17, 1998, at Larkin Funeral Home Southwest Chapel in Omaha. Rev. Eugene Loftis officiated. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery in Omaha with military honors by American Legion Post 348 of Fort Calhoun.
Wade E. Sheppard was born Jan. 25, 1922, in Ralston to Wade Sr. and Luella Sheppard. He graduated from Omaha South High School in 1940. He worked in the family business, Union Rubber Works in Ralston. On Oct. 9, 1942, he entered the Army to serve in World War II. He fought in France, Germany and other European locations, as well as North Africa, where he received the Purple Heart in April of 1945. He received other medals and numerous ribbons. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Ralston and continued working in the family business. He married
Frances Cachelin of Fort Calhoun on Aug. 17, 1947, at Miller Park Presbyterian Church in Omaha. The couple opened the Ralston Family Store in 1955. Later they bought the Sievers Grocery Store in Fort Calhoun, which they named Sheppard's. Because of their love for the outdoors, they started vegetable gardening and established K & S Gardens in Fort Calhoun. In 1987, Mr. Sheppard retired as a mechanical engineer from Mutual of Omaha.
He served as president of the Ralston Lions Club, was a member of the Ralston City Council and was a deacon of the Ralston Community Church. He served on the Washington County Veterans Board and was a member of American Legion Post 373 in Ralston before transferring to Post 348 in Fort Calhoun.
He is survived by his wife, Frances; one daughter and her husband, JoAnn and Russ Daly of Beaver Lake; two sons and their wives, Ed and Connie Sheppard of Malvern, Iowa and Robert and Barbara Sheppard of Fort Calhoun; grandchildren and their spouses, Jim and Cindy Daly, Corrie and Chris Hardick, Brett Sheppard, Dustin Sheppard, Carla Timm, Michelle Timm, Chalone Elsasser, Gabe Yocum, Michael Sheppard and Laura Shephard; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Alta Mack of Omaha; one brother and sister-in-law, David and Carolyn Sheppard of Ralston; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Russ Daly, Jim Daly, Michael Sheppard, Bret Sheppard, Chris Hardick and Richard Gehrig.
William C. "Bill" Bolton, 58
William C. "Bill" Bolton, 58, of Blair died Monday, Aug. 17, 1998, at St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at Campbell - Aman Funeral Home in Blair. Burial will be in the Blair Cemetery.
William C. Bolton was born May 25, 1940, in Blair to Chris and Willie ( Jones ) Bolton. He attended school in Blair. He worked for many years for Hawkins and Vrana Construction.
He is survived by three daughters and sons - in - law, Tammy and Wesley Inman, Kim and Danny Lovato and Wendy and Darrel Cates, all of Denver, Colo.; one son, Chris Bolton of Blair; eight grandchildren; four sisters, Gloria Mantell, Sharon Robinson, Shirley Bolton, all of Blair, and Mary Shumake of Tekamah; four brothers, Jim, Larry, Bob and Pat Bolton, all of Blair; and by a special friend, Rose.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one son, Shawn.
Freida Haley, 90
Freida Haley, 90, of Blair died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998, at the Tekamah Nursing Center.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church in Blair. A 3 p.m. graveside service is scheduled at Woodlawn cemetery in Wausa.
A prayer service will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Campbell - Aman Funeral Home, who is in charge of arrangements.
Freida Brassfield Haley was born on June 1, 1908, in Half Rock, Mo., to Orville and Sarah E. ( Brittian ) Brassfield. She was baptized and became a member of the Baptist Church. She graduated from Chillicothe High School in Missouri. In 1932, she married
Leon Haley. The family lived in Omaha for 17 years before moving to Wausa in 1949. They were members of the United Methodist Church in Wausa. She worked as a bookkeeper for a hatchery and then as a secretary for a lawyer and an insurance salesman. She later lived in California for 10 years and worked in a Boy Scout office. She retired in Morrill, close to her daughter, Carol. She enjoyed helping as a volunteer grandmother in the Morrill Schools. She moved to Blair and lived in Parkview Manor. She later moved to Good Shepherd Home.
She is survived by two daughters and sons - in - law, Carol and Virgil Baker of Wheatland, Wyo., and Connie and Alvan Andersen of Blair; one son, Patrick Haley of Reno, Nev.; eight grandchildren; 17 great - grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon, in 1949; her parents; three sisters and one brother.
Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church in Wausa or the First Lutheran Church in Blair.
