Barbara J. Bates

Barbara Jean Bates, 68, died Monday, November 21, 2011 at Good Samaritan Health Care Center.
She was born January 23, 1943 in Grand Island, Nebraska to Arthur L. and Lola B. (Brown) Castor.
Barbara had lived in North Platte for several years before moving to Illinois and Iowa. She later returned to North Platte and moved to Alliance in 1997 to be near her family.
She loved to dance, do crafts and painting, enjoyed playing bingo, and loved to fish. She was a member of the Eagles Club while living in North Platte.
Barbara is survived by her daughter, Debbi Nissen of Milford, Iowa; her mother, Lola Castor of Alliance; sisters, Sharon (Leroy) Perkins of Maxwell, Nebraska, Linda (Dallas) Houchin and Alice Foster of North Platte, Nebraska, Esther Castor of Wyoming, and Gladys (Bud) Welch of Alliance; and her brothers, Arthur Castor, Jr. and Roger Castor both of North Platte, Nebraska; grandchildren, Allicia Nissen and Melissa Nissen; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and 2 children, Michael Reed and Melissa Bates.
Memorial services will be held Friday, November 25, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel with Sister Jane Schneider officiating.

Tressa Bell Duncan
December 12, 1938 - November 19, 2011
Tressa (Ted) B. Duncan, 72, of Hemingford, NE went to be with her Lord and Savior November 19, 2011.
She was born December 12, 1938 in Ellsworth, KS to Forrest and Iona (Pierson) Branson. The family lived in Endicott, NE for several years, where her father worked in the brick yards. They then moved to Hemingford, NE in 1943 and Tressa began her education at Hemingford Elementary school and graduated from Hemingford High School in 1956.
She was married
to Bob Duncan November 8, 1957 in Rapid City, SD, to this union two sons were born, Daniel and Douglas. The couple were lifetime residents of Hemingford.
She was a member of Hemingford Volunteer Fireman Auxiliary and was instrumental in developing the dispatcher system for the Volunteer Fire Department. She was a dispatcher for 25 plus years. She was a Cub Scout leader Pack 210; attended the Evangelical Free Church in Alliance and her passion in life was sharing the salvation message of the Lord Jesus Christ. She was employed at Bruns Meat Service for ten years.
She is survived by her two sons, Dan (Nancy) Duncan of Loveland, CO, Doug (Cindy) Duncan of Omaha, NE; granddaughter, Brooke Danielle Duncan of Loveland, CO; grandson, Bobbie Dylan Duncan of Omaha, NE; step-grandsons, Brett Taylor of Fort Worth, TX, Mark Blanco of Bayard, NE; her sister, Dorothy Tinsley of Mitchell, NE; brother, Lee (Mary) Branson of Chadron, NE; numerous nieces and nephews and many special friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bob in 2001; two brother-in-laws, Norm Tinsley, Don Duncan and mother-in-law Mildred Mazanec.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, November 23 at Bates-Gould Chapel, Alliance, NE at 3:00 p.m. Pastor Dennis Gruber will officiate with burial in the Hemingford Cemetery. Viewing will be held at Bates-Gould Funeral Home in Hemingford on Tuesday from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Memorials may be made to Hemingford Volunteer Fire Association or Prairie Haven Hospice.
Monte W. Garner
Monte Wayne Garner, 58, of Hyannis, died Friday, November 18, 2011 from injuries in a motor vehicle accident in rural Cherry County.
He was born in Gordon, Nebraska on August 31, 1953 to Nyal and Edythe (Hathorn) Garner. He grew up south of Lakeside, attended Lakeside Rural school and graduated from Alliance High School in 1972.
On June 21, 1975 he was united in marriage to Marina J. Dafney in Alliance. They lived in Martin, South Dakota and Lusk, Wyoming before moving to Grant County in 1981.
Monte enjoyed agriculture and working on Sandhills area ranches all of his life. Monte owned and operated Garner Contracting. Most importantly, Monte was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend. He was an avid outdoorsman loving to hunt and fish. He also enjoyed nature and working with horses.
He is survived by his wife, Marina, his daughter, Marisa (Ron) Betson of Crawford, his son, Matthew (Mandy) Garner of Lincoln, his grandchildren, Jacob, Miranda and Amelia Betson and Miles Garner. He is also survived by his mother, Edythe Garner of Alliance, his sisters and brother, Shirley (Bruce) Herman of Joliet, MT, Jim Garner of Libby, MT, Sherry (John) Oliver of Gering and Debra (Calvin) Boyd of Callaway, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, his sister, Lynda Steffen and his nephew, Brad Herman.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, November 23 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Alliance. Father Don Huber will officiate. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Holly Ann Vogel
Holly Ann Vogel, 54, died Friday, November 18, 2011 at Box Butte General Hospital.
She was born on January 13, 1957 in Livermore, CA to Theodore Teller and Betty Sue (Trantham) Manz.
On February 10, 1973 she was united in marriage to Michael Allen Trout in Collbran, CO. He preceded her in death in 2005. She married
Darrel Vogel on February 14, 2009 in Alliance.
Holly ranched in DeBeque, CO for 22 years before moving to Alliance where they owned and operated their family ranch for 10 years. While in Colorado Holly was a volunteer E.M.T. and volunteered at a nursing home and ministered with Young Life. Following her move to Alliance she volunteered at Good Samaritan Health Care Center and was active in the Alliance Berean Church and with the Awana’s youth group as a music leader.
She is survived by her husband, Darrel Vogel, her children, Michael (Daneen) Trout, Shannon Trout-Rash, Justin (Tara) Trout, Jerry (Misty) Trout, her stepdaughters, Sara, Olivia and Anna all of Alliance. She is also survived by her mother, Betty (Russell) Mock of Sunset, TX, her sisters and brothers, April (Stephen) Maio of Westminster, CO, Mark Manz of Sioux Falls, SD, Johanna (Patrick) McCarty of Longmont, CO, and her sister-in-law, Ila Trout of Alliance. Her 12 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her first husband, Holly was preceded in death by her father.
Memorial services will be Sunday, November 27 at 4:00 p.m. at the Alliance Berean Church.

Dorothy McCune
September 19, 1920 - November 18, 2011
Dorothy Ann (O’Keefe) McCune, 91, of Alliance, died Friday, November 18, 2011 at her home.
She was born September 18, 1920 to Dr. Everett and Helen O’Keefe in Alliance. She graduated from St. Agnes Academy in Alliance.
On December 31, 1940 she married
Dee B. McCune and together they had 7 children.
She was preceded in death by her husband in1996, her daughter Deanne and son-in-law Wade Ellis, Jr. and her son, David.
Dorothy was an active member in the American Legion Auxiliary, Holy Rosary Altar Society, Museum Partners and a life long parishioner of Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
Dorothy’s quick wit and sense of humor will be greatly missed by her four surviving sons as well as her large extended family: Dan and wife Jo, Martin and wife Diane, Patrick, Paul and wife Debbie, Dan and Michael Ellis. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, the children of her late sister, Eileen (O’Keefe) and her husband Ted Percival and her late brother, Bob and his wife Darlene O’Keefe.
Dorothy lived a long and fruitful life here in Alliance. Her passing and life will continue to be remembered at the many multi family reunions yet to come. May perpetual life be granted upon her.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, November 23 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church with Father Lou Nollette officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Wake services will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home

Betty Mary Ushio
May 20, 1926 - November 15, 2011
Betty Mary Ushio, 85, died Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at Poplar Living Center in Casper, Wyoming where she had been staying during medical treatments at Wyoming Medical Center.
She was born May 20, 1926 in rural Cherry County, Nebraska to Orval and Mary Elizabeth (Sears) Baker. Betty was a resident of Alliance for 66 years, moving here with her mother after living in Valentine, Ainsworth, and Curtiss. She worked at Thiele's Soda Fountain, the Orange Tea Room; the Jet Factory; and Lenla's before joining her husband as co-owner of Alliance Cleaners. They worked together for many years in their business where they made many lifelong friends until their retirement in 1997.
On January 28, 1950 she married
Joy Ushio at the Presbyterian Church in Sterling, Colorado. Following his passing in 2003, she married
Lloyd Serl on October 4, 2005.
Betty was a member of the United Methodist Church, Job's Daughters Bethel Guardian Council, Eastern Star, Eagles Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 7 where she had served as president. She enjoyed her time with the Job’s Daughters members and mothers catering dinners, traveling on spring trips and attending Grand Bethel Sessions. Supreme Session in Hawaii as a chaperone in 1981 was one of her highlights. This was one of her five trips to the islands including others with the 442nd WWII Nisei Veteran’s Group, American Legion Auxiliary, and her niece Julie’s wedding.
She is survived by her husband, Lloyd, her daughters, Kim Reif and husband Jim of Hemingford, Tami Ushio of Casper, WY, and her son, Gary Langford and wife Joanne of Beatrice. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Leslie (Reif) tenBensel and husband Tyler of McCook, and Tannis Reif of Scottsbluff; grandsons, Chad Langford and wife Elizabeth, and their children, Emily, Andrew and Erin and Corey Langford and wife Kristie and their children, Nicholas, Katelyn and Noah of Omaha. She is also survived by her brother, Doug Baker and wife Della of Maywood, her sisters-in-law, Sai Ushio of Alliance, Rose Ikuta of Los Angeles, CA, Lela Baker of Spencer and her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Irene and Bill Koseki of Las Vegas, NV.
Betty always said she was fortunate for the time she had with her granddaughters. They worked on craft projects, gardened, played sports, baked, reveled in after school ice cream treats at Dairy Queen and Zesto or just plain goofed around together.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joy, her parents, her step-father, Edward Sping, an infant daughter, Joyce Ann Ushio, brother Vern and his wife Louise Baker, brother Donald Baker and brothers-in-law, Sam Ushio and Nobo Ikuta.
Visitation will be Sunday, Nov. 20 from 1-6 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Funeral Home. Cremation will follow the visitation and a memorial service will be Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 10:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church. Rev. Dr. Charles Kathurima M. and Jeanie Sedivy will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Alliance Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church.
