Nettie Carlson
RAVENNA -- Nettie E. Carlson, 98, of Ravenna died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Ravenna. The Revs. Mark Cadenbach and Todd Swift will officiate. Burial will be in the Riverside cemetery in Gibbon.
Memorials are suggested to the Ravenna Emergency Unit.
Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Carlson was born Dec. 24, 1901, to Herman and Louise (Puchert) Pope on a farm north of Shelton.
She married
LaVergne Carlson on Jan. 25, 1928. The couple lived on the Carlson family farm south of Ravenna until the early 1970s when they retired to Ravenna. She took pride in her home and garden.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Glenn of Grass Valley, Calif., and Myron "Jack" of Dixon, Ill.; two daughters, Vernetta (Mrs. Robert) Svanda of Ravenna and Shirley Swift of Omaha; 11 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband on May 10, 1974, two brothers and three sisters.
Emily Holcomb
BROKEN BOW -- Emily B. Holcomb, 85, of Broken Bow died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at Jennie M. Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Charles Gregory will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the Building Improvement Fund at the First Baptist Church in Broken Bow.
Mrs. Holcomb was born on Oct. 12, 1914, in the Round Valley community in Custer County to Edgar and Bertha (Ottun) Lee.
She attended country school in Round Valley and graduated from Sargent High School in 1933. She also attended Kearney State College.
She married
Donald Holcomb on March 12, 1938. They farmed northeast of Broken Bow. They moved to Broken Bow in 1970. Mr. Holcomb died on Nov. 15, 1988.
Mrs. Holcomb was a member of the First Baptist Church in Broken Bow, Cosmo Pals, an extension club, the Grange and a garden club. She was a 4-H leader for several years.
Survivors include one son, Darwin Holcomb of Broken Bow; two daughters, Marlene (Mrs. Lynn) Borgelt of Wisner and Dona (Mrs. Alvin) Ernesti of Columbus; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Erma Brown of Cheyenne, Wyo., and DeVohn Peterson of Weissert.
Artha Nilson
AURORA -- Artha Victoria Nilson, 96, of Aurora died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at the Hamilton Manor.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Aurora Cemetery. The Rev. Heung-Gyu Kim will officiate.
Visitation will be one hour before services at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Miss Nilson was born on July 5, 1903, on her parents' farm near Marquette to Erick and Hulda (Erickson) Nilson. At age 14, she moved with her parents to Aurora. She was educated in Hamilton County public schools and graduated from Aurora High School.
She attended Kearney State Teachers College and the University of Washington and graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1930. She received a master of arts degree in June 1934 from Colorado State Teachers College in Greeley. She was a member of Sigma Lambda and Kappa Delta Pi honorary educational fraternities.
She taught school for 17 years. Later, she worked as a retail clerk in Omaha, Denver, San Diego and Washington, D.C.
She returned to Aurora in 1948 to care for her elderly parents and lived in Aurora for several years. She moved to Lincoln in January 1965 and returned to Aurora in November 1999 to live at the Hamilton Manor.
Survivors include one brother, Arthur A. Nilson of Aurora.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Charlie, Arthur Edward, Victor and Oskar; and five sisters, Lydia Magnuson, Esther McMahon, Edith Hansen, Hulda Nolan and Hannah Hansen.
Irene Stenka
ELBA -- Irene M. Stenka, 79, of Elba, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at her home.
Services are pending with Peters Funeral Home of St. Paul.
Dollie Troyer
BROKEN BOW -- Dollie Alice Troyer, 94, of Broken Bow, formerly of Westerville, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Westerville cemetery at Westerville. The Rev. Doug Jones will officiate.
Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Memorials are suggested to the Diabetes Association.
Mrs. Troyer was born April 24, 1905, to Alapha and Susan (Gordon) Casteel in Custer County. She attended Myrtle School District. At a young age, her mother died and she stayed home to help with the family.
She married
Jacob Eldon Troyer on Jan. 7, 1925, at Westerville. After their marriage, they lived with his parents until moving to a farm north of Westerville. Later, they returned to Westerville where they ran the General Store. In 1945, they opened a filling station in Westerville and later owned and operated a grocery store and cafe. During this time, they also continued to farm.
Mr. Troyer died in October 1960. She continued to live in Westerville until moving to Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow in 1996.
She had been a member of the Assembly of God Church and later the Methodist Church in Westerville. She was an avid student of the Bible. She enjoyed making and painting plaster models, baking and making chocolate candy.
Survivors include two sons, Kenneth of Ashland and Glen of Ogallala; one daughter, Donna of Sacramento, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by eight brothers and four sisters.
Helen Maurer
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Helen Maurer, 86, of Oakland, Calif., formerly of Chapman, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000 at her home in Oakland.
Mrs. Maurer was born on June 20, 1913, near Chapman to John Samuel and Anna M. Magnuson. She attended District 28 School and graduated from Chapman High School. She received further education at the Grand Island Business College and was employed as a secretary.
After taking civil service exams she worked in Lincoln, Washington D.C. and later in California.
While living in Oakland, Calif., she married
George Holman in 1941. They owned and operated a wholesale sporting goods company. After Mr. Holman's death in 1959 she continued the business and later married
Floyd Maurer. Mr. Maurer died in 1989.
Survivors include three sisters, Barbara (Mrs. Loren) Ogden and Jackie (Mrs. Donald R.) Sampson of Central City and Gloria (Mrs. Edwin) Nelsen of Bella Vista, Ark.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Violet Dickerson, Bonnie Rice and Lorraine Hanway and one brother, Paul Magnuson.
