U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Ivan C. Satchell

Ivan C. Satchell passed away on Nov. 5, 2003, in the Fort Mead VA Hospital in Sturgis, S.D.
Ivan was born in Imperial, Neb., on Aug. 9, 1918.
He grew up in Imperial with six siblings, graduated from Chase County High School where he excelled in football and track.
He spent two years on a naval destroyer in the South Pacific during World War II and raised a family with his loving wife, Olive B. (Williams) Satchell, on a farm on the south divide near Wauneta, Neb.
Ivan is survived by his sister, Donna Jacks of Phoenix, Ariz.; his daughter, Linda Lee (Satchell) and husband, Sid Clark, of Pine Haven, Wyo.; two sons, Ivan Douglas Satchell and wife, Karen, of Billings, Mont. and William Fredrick Satchell II and wife, Jan, of Northboro, Mass. He has eight grandchildren, 11 great grand children and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Olive, in December, 1995; five of his siblings and one granddaughter.
Cremation has taken place and inurnment graveside services will be Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery, Imperial, Neb. with Pastor Murray Schmechel officiating.
Military rites will be by VFW Post #4688, Imperial, Neb.
A reception will follow services at the cemetery starting at 2 p.m. at the Imperial Eagles Club.
Liewer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial has been established in Ivan’s memory.

Dorothy Chandler

Dorothy Petersen Chandler, age 88, passed away Thanksgiving evening, Nov. 27, 2003, at the Imperial Manor Nursing Home in Imperial, Neb.
Dorothy was born June 15, 1915, in Washington County, Neb. to Peter L. and Gertrude Petersen.
She graduated from Herman High School in 1933 and attended Dana College in Blair, Neb., for one year after which she was determined to become a nurse. She trained at Immanuel School of Nursing in Omaha and graduated in September of 1937.
To find work she journeyed to Imperial, Neb., in January of 1939.
She served the area as a registered nurse, anesthetist, and hospital superintendent.
In 1947 she took the responsibility of "night nurse" working from 7 to 11 or 11 to 7. In 1974 she retired from full-time nursing but continued to fill in when needed until the Chase County Community Hospital moved to its present location.
On April 4, 1941, Dorothy married Neil Charles Chandler whom she had met in Imperial and in 1946 a daughter Julie was born.
Dorothy was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and held the office of Worthy Matron in 1978. She was also a member of the Rainbow Grand Cross of Colors.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and was active in the United Methodist Women and the Dorcas Circle.
She also served several years as secretary of the Imperial Grade School Board.
Upon retirement Dorothy enjoyed playing cards, visiting and traveling with her circle of close friends. The highlight of her travels was a trip to Jerusalem.
Dorothy moved to the Imperial Manor Nursing Home after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.
Dorothy was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, warm friend to many and a dedicated nurse whose skill, strength and concern were appreciated by the many patients and their families whom she was privileged to help.
Preceding her in death were her husband Neil and her two brothers.
She is survived by her daughter Julie and son-in-law Leonard Smith of Imperial, Neb. and her grandson Nathan Chandler-Smith and his wife Nancy, grandson Matthew Chandler-Smith and his wife Stara and son Ethan and granddaughter Sarah Chandler-Smith.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Imperial with Pastor Murray Schmechel officiating.
Organist was Mrs. Marcia Bauerle and soloist was Ms. Maika Bauerle.
Casketbearers were Robert Colson, Troy Musick, Nathan Chandler-Smith and Matthew Chandler-Smith.
Honorary casketbearers were Les Smith and Howard Kubie.
Eastern Star rites were by the Order of the Eastern Star, Imperial Chapter #279, Imperial, Neb.
Interment was at Mount Hope Cemetery following the services.
Liewer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Prayer and devotion were hallmarks of Dorothy’s life and her family would like to share one of her favorite verses from the Bible: This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24.

Guy Ness

A truly exceptional man, Guy Ness, died on his 98th birthday, Saturday, Nov. 29, while in the care of the Kenton Manor Health Care Center.
Guy was born in Escrick, Yorkshire, England in 1905 to Herbert, a merchant marine, and Anne (Nancy) Ness. He was a big brother to Hubert and Michael Ness; both who have preceded him in death.
Guy immigrated to the United States on Jan. 1, 1923, through Ellis Island.
On Feb. 23, 1928 Guy returned to England to marry Ruby Whitby in Hudswell, Yorkshire, England. The new family returned to the U.S. and settled in Nebraska in Big Springs, later moving to Imperial.
They enjoyed many years of drama, heartbreak and success, all very common results of being a small, independent farmer.
In 1968, Guy and Ruby retired to Greeley, Colo., where they continued to be involved in new work, friends and family.
Guy was active in his church, was a member of the National Rifle Association, enjoyed traveling and fishing and was passionate about farming and reading.
He was a very learned man and always had a great story to share. Many of his tales involved times, places and things that today seem almost mystical to us. We are so fortunate to have had him as a part of our lives.
Survivors are his wife, Ruby Ness of Greeley, Colo.; a son, Ray Ness of Ogallala, Neb.; a son-in-law, Eldon Grimes of Greeley, Colo.; four grandchildren, Trudy Krien of Ft. Collins, Colo., Beth Ness of Ogallala, Neb., Kristy LeClair of Little Rock, Ark. and Kerry Grimes of Windsor, Colo.; and six great-grandchildren.
In the winter of 1997-1998 Guy’s daughter, Joan Grimes and his grandson, Scott Ness preceded him in death.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m., today (Thursday, Dec. 4) at Trinity Episcopal Church.
Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Northern Colorado or the Weld Library Systems in care of Stoddard Funeral Home.

Neil Montgomery

Neil Robert Montgomery was born on April 22, 1932, on a farm in the former Dundy County Community of Lamont.
He attended rural country school and graduated from Curtis High School in 1950.
Neil worked as a ranch hand for several years before joining the Air Force in March of 1952.
He served in the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in March of 1956. Neil then gained employment with AT&T, as an installer, and traveled with his family all over the United States as worked dictated. He was employed with AT&T for 34 years retiring in 1988. Neil then moved to Imperial, where he made his home.
Neil passed away Wednesday evening, Nov. 26, 2003, at his home in Imperial. He was 71 years of age.
Neil was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Imperial, the Eagles of Imperial and the American Legion Post #134 of Haigler, Neb.
He enjoyed fishing, repairing small engines and he loved to dance.
Survivors include son Steve Montgomery of Memphis, Tenn.; daughter Debora Colbert and husband Skip of Loveland, Colo.; five grandchildren Travis, Taylor, Robert, Kathryn and Curtis; sisters Delsa Harmon and husband Martin of Imperial, Neb. and Janice Margheim and husband Larry of Morrill, Neb.; and loving companion Iona Kurth of Imperial, Neb.
Neil was preceded in death by his parents, sister Velda Bier and husband Loren, niece Cindy and nephew Danny.
Graveside services were held Monday afternoon, Dec. 1, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Lakeview Cemetery, Champion, Neb. with Pastor Robert Frank officiating.
Soloist and guitarist was Mr. Kim Silvester.
Military rites were by V.F.W. Post #4688, Imperial, Neb.
Interment followed at the Lakeview Cemetery.
A memorial has been established in Neil’s memory.
Liewer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Warren F. ‘Buff’ Buffington

Warren F. Buffington died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003 at the Imperial Manor in Imperial, Neb.
Buff was born to Hazel (Scott) and Warren B. Buffington Jan. 9, 1915 in Fort Morgan, Colo.
He was raised on a farm on the south divide near Wauneta, Neb. He left Wauneta for employment at Gates Rubber Co. in Denver, Colo. working there until he signed on with the US Navy in 1941.
He was aboard the USS Honolulu where he earned his rating as a Machinist’s Mate 1st Class.
He came home to marry Helen (Sander) Dixon in January 1941 and they returned to his station in Norfolk, Va. where they remained until his honorable discharge in the fall of 1942.
They returned home to the farm and began their family. There with their three sons, Ray, Dick and Don and one daughter Connie, Warren’s time was filled with farm, friends and family. A dedicated father, the children kept him occupied with high school rodeo, 4-H and a busy sports schedule.
In 1973 Buff went to Arthur, Neb. to work for the State Roads Dept. From there he served the courthouse in Imperial for 16 years in maintenance before retiring.
He was able to leave Imperial for a short while to live with his son Dick in Texas and then to Ogallala with daughter Connie until he went into the Imperial Manor in March of 2002.
Warren was a huge fan of sports, people and especially children. Much of his time throughout his life was dedicated to umpiring baseball games, high school sporting events, livestock sales, auctions or anywhere he could find a crowd of people.
Preceding him in death were his parents Warren B. and Hazel, brothers Bob and Bill, a granddaughter Brenda (Buffington) Egle, sister-in-law Nina, two nephews and a niece.
His survivors include a brother Kenny of Fort Collins, Colo.; a sister Betty Eaton of Oklahoma; sister-in-law Alvina of Wauneta; son Ray and wife Bonnie of Billings, Mo., their two children Chad of Longmont, Colo. and Jason and wife Denise of Las Vegas; son Dick of Amarillo, Texas and his three children Rhonda Whited and husband Troy of North Platte, Neb., Heidi of Krump, Texas and Josh of Amarillo, Texas; son Don and wife Janet of Wheatland, Wyo. and their four children Tyson and wife Julie of Gothenburg, Neb., Joe, Jim and Brian, all of Wheatland, Wyo.; a daughter Connie Bayley and husband L.D. and their two children Reggie Skinner and husband Shawn and Steele Peterson, all of Ogallala, Neb.; eight great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003 at 11:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Imperial, Neb. with Pastor Murray Schmechel officiating.
Organist was Mrs. Lucille McBride.
Masonic rites were by Masonic Purity Lodge #198 AF&AM, Imperial, Neb.
Military rites were by V.F.W. Post #4688, Imperial, Neb.
Inurnment was in the Riverside Cemetery, Wauneta, Neb.
Liewer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Clarence W. Larson

Clarence W. Larson, 86, of South Sioux City, Iowa, departed this world on Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, after living a long and meaningful life.
Services were Tuesday, Dec. 2 at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Jim Moore, pastor of St. Paul United Methodist Church officiating.
Graveside services with a military flag presentation was held at 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 2 in the City Cemetery at Bloomfield, Neb.
Clarence was born Nov. 29, 1916, the son of Linus and Hilma (Nelson) Larson in Wausa, Neb.
He was baptized and confirmed at the Tabor Lutheran Church in Wausa.
He served our country in World War II. After an honorable discharge from the service, he returned to Nebraska and married the love of his life, Elva A. Parrill on Dec. 29, 1946 in Bloomfield, Neb.
Clarence and Elva settled in Wausa, where he operated the family farm. The couple had three children.
Later, they moved to Bloomfield, where he worked for the City of Bloomfield. He retired in Wisconsin, then returned to Nebraska and most recently lived in South Sioux City.
Clarence was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. He had a love for fishing that he shared with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was a hard worker, who beheld great dedication to whatever he put his hand to. He maintained a magnificent, abundant garden until the age of 83.
Left to embrace a lifetime of glorious memories with Clarence are his beloved wife, Elva of 56 years; a son, Larry and his wife, Beth of Imperial, Neb.; a daughter, Sharon Skokan of Sioux City, Iowa; three grandsons, Matt Skokan and his wife, Julie, and Christopher and Colin Larson; a granddaughter, Morgan Skokan; five great grandchildren, Kiara, Joshua, Tristan, Dylan and Chloe Skokan; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Gary; two brothers, Wilbert and Marvin; and four sisters, Lillie, Mabel, Anna and Ruth.
Pallbearers were Matt Skokan, Lonnie and Doug Parrill, Chris and Colin Larson and Douglas Kristensen.
