Violet Horn
Violet Joy Horn, 79, of Grand Island died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island with the Rev. Vernon Rice officiating. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Grand Island.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to service time Monday with family receiving friends from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the family.
Mrs. Horn was born on Feb. 19, 1920, to Sherman and Katherine (Swickard) Stuefer in Schuyler. She attended District 43 School and Trinity Lutheran School in Schuyler.
She married
Howard L. Horn in 1960. The couple lived on the family farm near Newman Grove until his retirement in 1975. They lived most of their married
life in and around Newman Grove. The couple moved to Grand Island in 1988.
Mrs. Horn lived with her daughter, Marcee, in Dannebrog prior to living at a nursing home in Wood River and then Lakeview Health and Rehab Center.
Mrs. Horn was a member of the United Methodist Church in Newman Grove. She enjoyed crafts, antiques and being with children. She also enjoyed being the wife of a farmer.
Survivors include one daughter, Marcee Potter of Fairbury; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Dale Stuefer and Gayle Stuefer of Lincoln and Quay Stuefer of Columbus; and four sisters, Virginia Vohland and Burdean Christ of Grand Island, Diamond Flory of Shelton and Shirley Johannes of Columbus.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard.
'Ted' Kelsey
Theodore "Ted" W. Kelsey, 63, of Grand Island died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at the St. Francis Medical Center.
Services are pending with the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Caroline Dahlsten
ERICSON -- Caroline Anne Dahlsten, 62, of Ericson died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at her home after a two-year illness with cancer.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Ericson. The Rev. Cynthia Alstadt will officiate. There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the family. Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell is in charge of arrangements.
Freda John
ARCADIA -- Freda F. John, 75, of Arcadia died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at the Rose Lane Care Home in Loup City.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Ord Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Lee Park cemetery west of Arcadia.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Ord Memorial Chapel.
Dean Ruebsamen
GILTNER -- Dean H. Ruebsamen, 97, of Giltner died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Giltner United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dwight DeLaet will officiate. Burial will be in the Giltner Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Memorials may be made to the Giltner cemetery Association or the Giltner United Methodist Church.
Mr. Ruebsamen was born March 25, 1902, to Henry C. and Dora (Spear) Ruebsamen in Hamilton County. He grew up on a farm between Giltner and Harvard. He attended school at East Boag and Hart Schools.
He married
Alberta Dawson on Oct. 25, 1925, at Grand Island. After their marriage, they lived and farmed southeast of Giltner. They had five sons and two daughters. Mrs. Ruebsamen died on Oct. 29, 1944.
He married
Lucille Lorenson on June 3, 1951, in Grand Island. They lived on a farm south of Giltner until Mr. Ruebsamen retired from farming in 1966. They had celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary shortly before her death in 1992.
Mr. Ruebsamen enjoyed traveling following his retirement. He visited many states, as well as Japan and Korea. His hobbies included gardening and raising flowers.
Mr. Ruebsamen was a member of the United Methodist Church in Giltner and served his church in many capacities.
Survivors include five sons, Darrel of San Antonio, Texas, Dale of Huntington Beach, Calif., Neil of Grand Island, Marvin of San Jose, Calif., and Wilbur of Santa Maria, Calif.; a daughter, Merna Valen of Irvine, Calif.; 26 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.
Other than his wives, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Audry Rath, Thelma Schmer and Esther Itzen; one brother, Edward; one daughter, Beverly; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Scott Quandt
Scott A. Quandt, 28, of Grand Island died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999 at his home.
Services are pending with Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
John Henry Auserod
BARTLETT -- John Henry Auserod, 65, of Bartlett died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Bartlett with the Rev. Cynthia Alstadt officiating. Burial will be in the Bartlett cemetery with military graveside rites by American Legion Post 107. Visitation will be after 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Huffman's Brooks Chapel of Elgin is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Auserod was born Aug. 15, 1934 in Bartlett to Arthur O. and Anna L. (Pletcher) Auserod. He grew up in Bartlett where he attended the public school. He also attended the Milford Trade School and received specialty training in diesel mechanics.
He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1956, and served as a light vehicle driver at Camp Chaffee, Ark. He was honorably discharged in 1957.
Mr. Auserod was a Bartlett resident his entire life and was employed by a number of area ranchers as a ranch hand and mechanic.
Survivors include three sisters, Annetta Fitzsimonds of Lakewood, Colo., Marylyn Crosby of Norfolk and Gloria Lehl of Lincoln, five nieces and three nephews.
'Joe' Gerdes
AURORA -- Josephine "Joe" Gerdes, 76, of Aurora died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999 at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Higby Mortuary Chapel in Aurora with the Rev. Jay Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Higby Mortuary.
Mrs. Gerdes was born Sept. 13, 1923 at a homestead near Hampton to Isaac and Emma (Peters) Braun. She grew up in Hampton and graduated from Hampton High School.
She married
Floyd Nelson in April 1949 in Aurora, where the couple lived.
On Dec. 7, 1957 she married
Archie Gerdes in Seward. She worked as a cook at the Frontier Cafe and other cafes in Aurora. She also was a cook at Bethesda Nursing Home for 18 years before retiring.
Mrs. Gerdes enjoyed sewing crafts, cooking and baseball games.
Survivors include three sons, Robert F. Nelson of Higgins, Texas, Gary L. Gerdes of Aurora and Steven J. Gerdes of Marquett; one daughter, Sharon Jo Fonda (Mrs. Bill) of Omaha; one sister, Marilyn Ball of Arcadia, Colo.; one brother, Wilferd Braun of Aurora; five grandsons; five granddaughters; and three great-granddaughters.
