Donald Freeman
DESHLER -- Donald Duane Freeman, 74, of Deshler died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Deshler Presbyterian Church. The Rev. William B. Thornton will officiate. Burial will be in the Deshler City cemetery with military graveside services by Halfman American Legion Post 352 of Deshler.
Deshler Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the American Cancer Society.
Mr. Freeman was born on July 26, 1925, at Fort Collins, Colo., to Guy and Ruth (McNutt) Freeman. At an early age, he moved with his family to Deshler. He graduated from Deshler High School in 1943.
He served in the U.S. Navy as a machinist mate during World War II from 1943 to June 4, 1946.
He married
Lucille Moritz on Sept. 7, 1947, at the First Presbyterian Church in Lincoln. Mr. Freeman attended the University of Nebraska for two years. He returned to the Navy on April 30, 1951, and served in the Korean War. He was discharged in 1954 and returned to Deshler to help at the family's grocery business. He purchased the business from his mother in 1964 and ran it until retiring in 1989.
He was a member of the Deshler Presbyterian Church, Halfman American Legion Post 352, Thayer County Izaac Walton League and Hebron Masonic Lodge. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Session for eight terms, a former Deshler city councilman for 26 years, a former member of the Deshler Chamber of Commerce and Deshler Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Don of Lincoln and David of Grand Island; one daughter, Mary Lemon of Olathe, Kan.; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Joyce Heidelk of Fairbury.
Catherine Dunning
ROBBINSDALE, Minn. -- Catherine Dunning, 88, of Robbinsdale, Minn., formerly of Grand island, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at her home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Frank Hoelck will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to service time Wednesday at the church.
Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Jean Potts
NEW YORK -- Jean C. Potts, 88, of New York, formerly of St. Paul, died Nov. 10, 1999, at her home.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Peters Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Thomas G. Hyde will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery in St. Paul.
There will be no visitation. Miss Potts was cremated.
Memorials are suggested to the Howard County Historical Society.
Michael Loescher
Michael L. Loescher, 55, of Grand Island died Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999, at his home.
Services are pending with the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Raymond Strehle
Raymond F. Strehle, 76, of Grand Island died Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999, at the Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Services are pending with the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Alvin Buller
AURORA -- Alvin Buller, 80, of Aurora died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at his home south of Hampton.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Higby Mortuary Chapel in Aurora. The Rev. Barry McCormick will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.
Mr. Buller was born April 5, 1919, northwest of Henderson in Hamilton County to Henry and Katie (Unruh) Buller. He grew up in Hamilton County and attended grade school at District No. 73 West. He graduated from Henderson High School in 1937. He earned his teacher's certificate from Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kan., in 1939 and taught school for two years at Columbia School District No. 118 in Marion County, Kan. He worked in Civilian Public Service from 1941 until 1945.
He married
Esther Schroeder on April 1, 1945, in Hooker, Okla. They farmed in Hamilton County from 1946 until 1979 and continued to live on the farm while helping his son farm. They spent the winter months in Pharr, Texas.
He attended the Aurora Pleasantview Bible Church. He had served as a trustee, general song leader and choir director at the Mennonite Brethern Church in Henderson. He was a volunteer winter worker at the Rio Grande Bible Institute in Edinburg, Texas, for several years in the 1970s and 1980s. As a devout Christian, he spent much of his time worshipping the Lord and studying the Bible.
His favorite hobby was collecting, restoring and showing antique gas engines.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Paul of Aurora; two daughters, Norma Jean (Mrs. Mike) Wiebe of Denton, Texas, and Donna Mae (Mrs. Harvey) Thiessen of Hastings; three grandsons; three granddaughters; and one brother, Lawrence of Henderson.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Edna Pillard.
Robert Hurst
BURWELL -- Robert Earl Hurst, 90, of Burwell died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, in Littleton, Colo.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Burwell. The Rev. Michael Laing will officiate. Burial will be in the Cottonwood cemetery in Burwell.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Hurst was born Dec. 1, 1908, in Westboro, Mo.
He married
Helen Fackler Aug. 4, 1935. They lived in Atkinson where he was the superintendent, coach and teacher. They also lived in Orchard and in 1943 moved to Page. In 1947, they moved to a farm outside of Burwell. She died in 1996 and he continued to farm until a short time ago when he moved to Colorado.
Survivors include one son, Roger; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters.
Leona Miller
FARWELL -- Leona A. Miller, 86, of Farwell died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Larry Lepper will officiate. Burial will be in the Elmwood cemetery in St. Paul.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Hospice.
Mrs. Miller was born on Sept. 10, 1913, at Ravenna to Frank and Augustine (Kosch) Schelby. She attended Rockville school and graduated in 1932. She then helped her parents at home with the children. In 1938, she moved to Grand Island with her family and worked at Model Laundry.
She married
Clarence Miller on Jan. 9, 1946, in Kansas. The couple lived in Portland, Ore. She worked at a laundry company for a number of years in Portland. She was then employed at Allstates Motel as a maid. She retired in 1974.
Her husband died in February 1984 and she continued to live in Portland until May 1995 when she moved to Farwell. She entered the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul in June 1997.
She enjoyed crocheting, bowling and playing cards.
She was a member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Portland.
Survivors include one daughter, Karen Jorgensen of Farwell; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold Gudenrath of Horsham, Pa.; and one sister, Fern Nietfeldt of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter; and two brothers, Fred and Raymond Schelby.
