Helen Mahoney
OMAHA -- Helen M. Mahoney, 90, of Omaha died Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999, in Omaha.
Services will be at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday at St. Cecilia Cathedral in Omaha. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery in Omaha.
A wake service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at John A. Gentleman Westside Chapel in Omaha.
Memorials are suggested to St. Cecilia Cathedral.
She was born on July 11, 1909, at Council Bluffs, Iowa, to James and Mary Thome Wickham.
Survivors include two sons, Joseph Mahoney and Thomas Mahoney, both of Omaha; one daughter, Therese (Mrs. Joseph) Preusser of Grand Island; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome Mahoney.
Larry Samway
McCOOK -- Larry L. Samway, 60, of McCook died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at Swanson Lake near Trenton.
Services were Friday, Nov. 26, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in McCook with the Rev. Ted Okland officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park cemetery in McCook.
Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Samway was born on March 15, 1939, in Grand Island to Fred and Evelyn (Speck) Samway. He graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1957.
He married
Carol Reher in Grand Island on Jan. 26, 1958. He worked for Whitaker Furniture until 1981, when he started his own business, Samway Floor Covering and Furniture.
He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church since 1965. He was a lifetime member and past president of the Optimist Club and served on the McCook Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed coaching and fast-pitch softball. He loved hunting and fishing. He was coordinator of the annual fishing derby at Red Willow Lake for 28 years.
Survivors include his wife, Carol of McCook; his mother, Evelyn Samway of Grand Island; one son, Darrin Samway of McCook; two daughters, Becky (Mrs. Ken) Meyers of McCook and Kathy (Mrs. James) Uerling of Indianola; two brothers, Charles Samway of Sterling, Colo., and Dennis Samway of Lexington; one sister, Nancy (Mrs. Lynn) Johnson of Grand Island; four grandchildren; and one step-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Jim.
Thomas Heneage
PACIFICA, Calif. -- Thomas Heneage, 79, of Pacifica, Calif., died Thursday, Nov. 25, 1999.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Grand Island City cemetery with the Rev. Robert Harms officiating.
There will be no visitation. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
Mr. Heneage was born Jan. 20, 1920, in Illinois to Thomas and Florence (Cribben) Heneage. He was an aviator during World War II. He graduated from Dartmouth in 1946.
He married
Eileen S. Schmidt on Sept. 7, 1957, in Carmel, Calif. They lived in San Francisco and Pacifica, Calif. He retired as a life insurance underwriter for Equitable. He was a member of West Portal Lutheran Church in San Francisco.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife in April.
Vernon Hawke
Vernon L. Hawke, 71, of Grand Island, formerly of Gibbon, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at St. Francis Memorial Skilled Care Unit.
Services are pending with Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Dean Hawke of Grand Island.
John Van Oosbree
John C. Van Oosbree, 73, of Grand Island died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island. The Rev. C. Roger Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery. Mr. Van Oosbree was cremated.
Memorials are suggested to John Shell Scholarship Fund at the church and Elks Lodge No. 604.
Mr. Van Oosbree was born May 11, 1926, to John C. and Marie (Van Velzen) Van Oosbree at Sioux Center, Iowa. He grew up in Sioux Center, attending school there and graduating in 1944. He entered the U.S. Army on Oct. 30, 1944, and was discharged on Oct. 31, 1948.
He married
Norma J. Goodmanson on April 27, 1956, at Ireton, Iowa. The couple moved to Grand Island, where he worked for Northwestern Bell as a telephone lineman.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, American Legion 40/8 Post No. 53, VFW, Communication Workers of America No. 7401, PER of BPO Elks, Platt-Duetsche and Liederkranz.
He served as a deacon, elder, trustee and Sunday school secretary at the church.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lori (Mrs. Steve) Glinschinski of Shoreview, Minn., and Stacy (Mrs. Eric) Eidler of Portland, Ore.; two grandchildren; two brothers, Christian of Emmetsburg, Iowa, and Cornelius "Cork" of Hometown, Ill.; and two sisters, Johanna Gortsema of Grangeville, Idaho, and Marie Boogerd of Rock Valley, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Tony, and one sister, Anna Stoub.
'Blanche' Hodson
TAYLOR -- Flora Blanche Hodson, 94, of Taylor died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Burwell Baptist Church in Burwell. The Rev. David Koenigsberg will officiate. Burial will be in Taylor City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell. Memorials are suggested to the family or Hodson/Bowley Scholarship Fund.
'Carl' Weckbach
ORD -- Charles "Carl" Weckbach, 91, formerly of Ord died Friday, Dec. 3, 1999, at Grand Island Veterans Home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. The Rev. Jim Warner will officiate. Burial will be in Ord Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Mr. Weckbach was born May 30, 1908, to Charles and Ella (Clark) Weckbach at Crete. He grew up in Crete, where the family was affiliated with City National Bank.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, mostly in France and Germany. While in the service, his family purchased First National Bank in Ord and moved there in 1943. After being discharged, he moved to Ord and joined his brother and mother to work at the bank.
After his mother died in 1958, he and his brother continued to work at the bank until they sold their stock in 1970 and retired. He continued to live in Ord until his health deteriorated, and he moved to Grand Island Veterans Home.
He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Elks Lodge, American Legion and VFW, all in Ord, before moving to Grand Island. He also was active in Ord Chamber of Commerce and other area organizations.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Clark.
