LINCOLN -- Shirley M. Sonderup, 74, of Lincoln, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.
Services are pending at Palmer's Funeral Home in Fullerton.
John Maixner
ONTARIO, Calif. -- John "Jack" L. Maixner, 67, of Ontario, Calif., formerly of Ravenna, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at Ontario.
Services are pending in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Leonard Mohr
Leonard F. Mohr, 80, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, at his son's home.
Services are pending at Kleine Funeral Home.
Jack Gideon
BURWELL -- Jack Leroy Gideon, 66, of Burwell, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Ord. The Rev. Keith Menter will officiate. Burial will be in Cottonwood cemetery in Burwell.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
Memorials are suggested to the Breast Cancer Foundation.
Stanley King
GIBBON -- Stanley King, 78, of Gibbon died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Gibbon.
Graveside services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Gibbon Riverside cemetery with the Rev. David deFreese officiating. Gibbon American Legion Post 310 will participate. Further services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church in Kearney.
There will be no visitation. Godberson Mortuary of Gibbon is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. King was born on Dec. 30, 1920, in Amherst to George and Myrtle (Harris) King. He grew up in Amherst and graduated from Amherst High School in 1936. He worked on the family farm and was active as a 4-H leader. He also worked in western Nebraska in the beet industry. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in the Middle East during World War II. He returned to Amherst in 1945.
He married
Norma Kreutzer on Aug. 18, 1946, in Kearney. The couple moved in 1948 to a farm south of Gibbon, where they lived for 27 years until moving to Gibbon. He served on the Gibbon school board and as mayor of Gibbon. He served on many other city and county boards.
Survivors include one son, Stephen of Gibbon; three daughters, Linda Clark of Kearney, Pat Maurer of Omaha and Susan (Mrs. Mark) Garrett of Upland; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Keith of Kearney and Clark of Lexington; and one sister, Barbara Marcy of Chadron.
His wife died in 1993. He also was preceded in death by one brother.
Max Mankin
AURORA -- Max Clinton Mankin, 57, of Aurora died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church in Aurora. The Rev. Jay Mitchell will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Mr. Mankin was born on Nov. 10, 1942, in Seattle to Cloyde and Laleen (Luthy) Mankin. He graduated from Aurora High School in 1960 and from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Law School in 1971.
He married
Kathryn Williams on May 28, 1976, at Ord. He worked as an attorney in the Aurora area for most of his life.
He was a member of the Aurora Chamber of Commerce and American Contract Bridge League. He was an avid Aurora sports fan and bridge player. He enjoyed antiques and bridge.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Clayton Mankin of Aurora; a daughter, Sara (Mrs. Micah) Willis of Grand Island; his mother, of Aurora; a brother, Wendell Mankin of Aurora; and two sisters, Beverly Rueter of Garland, Texas, and Rosemary Molvar of Lincoln.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Shirley Sonderup

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton. The Rev. Mary McQueen will officiate. Burial will be at the Fullerton Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the National Jewish Hospital.
Mrs. Sonderup was born Nov. 26, 1925, to Ted and Betty Sterling in Omaha. She grew up in Omaha and graduated from Benson High School in 1944. After high school she worked at Martin Bomber Plant in Bellevue.
She married
Norman V. Sonderup Oct. 10, 1945 at the First English Lutheran Church in Omaha. After their marriage Mr. Sonderup joined the service and moved to Florida for 1 1/2 years and then moved back to Omaha.
She worked at Mutual Benefit Life Insurance for seven years as an underwriter before becoming a homemaker. She retired in 1984 and moved to Lincoln, where she lived until her death.
She enjoyed traveling. While living in Omaha she was a member of the First English Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Terry of Plano, Texas, Jay of Fort Collins, Colo. and Chris of Lincoln; one brother, Ted Sterling of Kelly, Iowa; two sisters, Lorraine Doliquin of Santa Ana, Calif. and Beverly Thomas of Downey, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
Hortense Sorensen
BROKEN BOW -- Hortense Sorensen, 100, of Broken Bow died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Cliff Reynolds will officiate. Burial will be in the Dannebrog Cemetery. Further services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Dannebrog with the Rev. Bob Carlson officiating.
Memorials are suggested to Heritage Hall Nursing Home and to Our Savior's Lutheran Church, both in Broken Bow.
Miss Sorensen was born on Nov. 16, 1899, on a farm near Dannebrog to William and Anna Sorensen. In 1914, the family moved into Dannebrog, where she attended school and graduated from high school in 1917.
She attended college at Kearney Normal School and earned her two-year certificate to teach. She taught in several rural schools in Howard County and then taught first and second grades in her hometown school for 15 years.
She later attended Colorado State College at Greeley, where she received her bachelor's degree in education in 1941. She then taught first and second grades in Weldona, Las Animos and Brighton, Colo.
A few years after that, she moved to Wyoming. She taught in Cheyenne and Evanston and later became endorsed in special education.
She then moved to California and taught at Modesto, Bakersfield and San Diego. Altogether, she taught about 50 years. After she retired, she lived in a retirement complex in San Diego for 15 years.
When her health began to fail, she moved to Broken Bow in November 1986 to live with her brother and his wife. Since March 1987, she had resided at Heritage Hall in Broken Bow.
Among survivors is a sister-in-law, Althea Sorensen of Broken Bow.
She is preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
