Wayne Crosser
Wayne L. Crosser, 72, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, in the St. Francis Medical Center emergency room.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River. The Rev. Scott Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Cameron cemetery north of Wood River.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Cameron cemetery Association.
Mr. Crosser was born on Jan. 25, 1927, at Wood River to Irwin and Gladys (Miller) Crosser. He attended rural schools and graduated from Wood River High School in 1944. He farmed until 1953, when he entered the Army and served until 1954.
He married
Donna Murray on Jan. 9, 1954, in Chicago. The couple returned to Nebraska and lived in Grand Island before moving to Grand Forks, N.D., Sioux City, Iowa, and then to Des Plaines, Ill. They returned to Grand Island in 1962. He worked at Swift and Co. and retired in 1979.
Survivors include his wife; one son, David of Marquette; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by twin sons; one grandson; and one brother, Leonard.
Jack Gideon
BURWELL -- Jack Leroy Gideon, 66, of Burwell died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Ord. The Rev. Keith Menter will officiate. Burial will be in Cottonwood cemetery in Burwell.
Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Breast Cancer Foundation.
Mr. Gideon was born on Jan. 25, 1933, in Burwell to Melvin and Edna (Jensen) Gideon. He attended rural schools in west Garfield County and graduated from Burwell High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from April 27, 1953, to Sept. 1, 1955.
He married
V. Marie Taylor on May 23, 1964, in Burwell.
He was a feedlot manager for 20 years for Charlie Cassidy in Burwell. They moved to Atkinson in 1973. He managed National Farms west feedlot and Keating International feedlots. He went to work for Shane Farms in 1981. They moved south of Burwell in 1987. He managed the Elks Club in Ord until 1995, when he retired.
He loved working with and raising quarter horses. He enjoyed working around his home, was an avid bird-watcher and enjoyed photography.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Ord and a member of the American Legion Post in Burwell. He was a past post commander of the Farley-Tushla Post in Atkinson.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Jacqueline (Mrs. David) Butterfield of Atkinson and Jocelyn (Mrs. Chuck) Roberts of Lincoln; three grandchildren; one brother, Melvin; and two sisters, Erma Hoover of Burwell and Melva (Mrs. Orville) Fernau of Wayne.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Johnson.
Wilda Holmes
STROMSBURG -- Wilda M. Holmes, 97, of Stromsburg, formerly of Polk, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Polk United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jeffery Thurman will officiate.
Solt Funeral Home in Polk is in charge of arrangements.
Garnette Loucks
Garnette V. Loucks, 95, of Grand Island died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at Tiffany Square Care Center.
Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Robert Tanner
OXFORD -- Robert Tanner, 79, of Oxford died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Oxford. The Rev. Dallas Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in the Oxford cemetery with military honors.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Mitchell-Nelson Funeral Home in Oxford.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mr. Tanner was born on May 15, 1920, in McCook to Theodore and Katherine (Walters) Tanner. He grew up in Oxford and graduated from Oxford High School in 1940.
He married
Virginia Evelyn Clark on June 20, 1940. The couple lived in Oxford.
He worked for the Chicago-Burlington-Quincy Railroad for three years after graduation. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in November 1943 and served in North Africa, Italy and the invasion of southern France, flew "the hump" in China and was discharged in July 1945. He received many campaign medals and ribbons.
When he returned to Oxford from military service, he resumed work with the railroad until his retirement in 1980.
He was well known for his yard and loved woodworking. His hobbies included flying model airplanes, photography, archery and gardening.
He was a member of American Legion Post 219 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5437, both of Oxford.
Survivors include two sons, Robert "Dobie" of Oxford and Jim of Denver; one daughter, Jean (Mrs. Gary) Langley of Grand Island; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Grace McQuiston of Hastings; two brothers, Leonard Tanner of Seattle and Stanley Martin of Dallas; and one stepsister, Anna (Mrs. Rex) Grosenbach of Santa Ana, Calif.
Vernon Hawke
Vernon L. Hawke, 71, of Grand Island, formerly of Gibbon, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 1999, at St. Francis Memorial Skilled Care Unit.
Memorial services are pending with Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon. Due to an illness in the family, the services will be at a later date.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Dean Hawke of Grand Island.
Theresa Johnson
Theresa E. Johnson, 88, of Grand Island died Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, at Wedgewood Care Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Cathedral with the Rev. Tom Ryan officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday with a 7 p.m. wake service at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Theresa Johnson family.
Survivors include her husband, Albert A. Johnson of Grand Island; one daughter, Georgia (Mrs. Ronald) Beck of Grand Island; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Bob, Tony, Joe and Leo Krajewski and four sisters, Mary, Anna, Helen and Frances.
