Garnette Loucks
Garnette V. Loucks, 95, of Grand Island, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at Tiffany Square Care Center.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel at the First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. C. Roger Nelson will officiate. Burial will be at the Fairhaven Memorial Park in Santa Ana, Calif.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church.
Delbert Martens
Delbert L. Martens, 72, of Grand Island died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999 at the Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Donald Larmore will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. rosary Sunday at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Memorials are suggested to the donors choice.
Klein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Hollis Richter
Hollis C. Richter, 83, of Grand Island died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at Tiffany Square Care Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Daniel Bremer officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation is from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 5 to 8 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to Grace Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Richter was born on June 30, 1916, in Gresham to Frederick and Merle (Ryan) Richter. He grew up in the Gresham and York areas. He graduated from York High School in 1934 and from the University of Nebraska in 1939.
He married
Alma M. Rahe on March 14, 1942, at Chappell. They lived in Burbank, Calif., where he worked for Bendix Aviation for six years as an outside production manager. In 1946, the couple moved back to York, where he worked with his father at a Sinclair station. He also worked at the Kaiser dealership and then for Oliver Implement. He was transferred to Grand Island in 1960. He retired in 1980.
He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, LLL men's club and senior golf leagues at Indianhead and Municipal golf courses. He was a past elder in his church and enjoyed woodworking.
Survivors include his wife, Alma Richter of Grand Island; two daughters, Cheryl (Mrs. Gerald) Troxel of Mansfield, Texas, and Sheila (Mrs. Bruce) Wheeler of Albany, Ore.; one son, Hollis Richter II of Boise, Idaho; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Nadine Davis.
Charles Chramosta
RAVENNA -- Charles H. Chramosta, 91, of Ravenna died Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, at Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.
Services are pending with Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna.
Helen Gzehoviak
LOUP CITY -- Helen D. Gzehoviak, 90, of Loup City died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City. The Rev. Reginald A. Urban will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery at Loup City. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the church, with a 4 p.m. sodality rosary. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice. Peters Funeral Home of Loup City is in charge of arrangements.
Wilda Holmes
STROMSBURG -- Wilda M. Holmes, 97, of Stromsburg, formerly of Polk, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Polk United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jeffery Thurman will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Arborville cemetery near Polk.
Memorials are suggested to the Polk Senior Center, United Methodist Church or Midwest Covenant Home.
Solt Funeral Home in Polk is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Holmes was born Jan. 26, 1902, in Primghar, Iowa to John Joseph and Jennie Lavina (Keck) Williams. She attended District 7 School in Washta, Iowa and graduated from Washta High School in 1920, where she was involved in theater, drama elocution and music.
She married
Paul Cecil Holmes on Dec. 1, 1923, at the chapel of Grace Methodist Church in Sioux City, Iowa. They lived in Arcadia until 1945, when they lived in Osceola for one year, before settling in Polk in 1946. Mr. Holmes died on Jan. 14, 1960. Mrs. Holmes continued to live in Polk until moving to the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg in 1997.
Mrs. Holmes was a member of the Polk United Methodist Church, the Ladies Auxiliary and the Rebekah Lodge in Polk. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, ceramics, playing pool, traveling and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include two sons, Robert of Central City and John of Lincoln; two daughters, Patricia A. (Mrs. Oliver) Kempf of San Bruno, Calif. and Kathleen (Mrs. Godfrey) Machal of Stromsburg; one sister, Marjorie Fedderson of Armstrong, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, a son, Gaylen; and a granddaughter.
Leon Hunt
Leon Hunt, 87, of Grand Island, formerly of rural Merna, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, in Grand Island.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with the Rev. Doug Jones officiating. Burial will be in Merna Cemetery.
Visitation is from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Mr. Hunt was born in a sod house on his parents' homestead near Brewster to Lee V. and Ida M. (Kile) Hunt. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school through the eighth grade.
He married
Clara Bruce on Feb. 25, 1939, in Thedford. They lived in Brewster until 1941, then moved to Wyoming, where they lived in Rawlins and Saratoga. They moved to a farm west of Merna in 1944. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1989. She died in 1994. He moved to Grand Island in October 1995 to live with his son, Roger.
He was a member of Broken Bow Elks Lodge No. 1688. He loved to fish and hunt, attend rodeos and attend antique auctions.
Survivors include four sons, Carl "Tuffy" Hunt of Kearney, Gerald Hunt of Republican City and Roy Hunt and Roger Hunt, both of Grand Island; four daughters, Iris (Mrs. Larry) Sisson of Ainsworth, Janice (Mrs. Leonard) Swearingen of Litchfield, Georgia (Mrs. Tom) Kleeb of Sargent and Kathy (Mrs. Marvin) Christy of San Jose, Calif.; one sister, Gaythel Fox of Brewster; 19 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; three brothers, Clifford, James A. and Leslie V. Hunt; and one sister, Carrie I. Hunt.
Elwin Schaad
MERNA -- Elwin C. Schaad, 77, of Broken Bow, formerly of rural Merna, died Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, at Jennie Melham Hospital in Broken Bow.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with the Rev. Richard Adrian officiating. Burial will be in Cliff cemetery west of Merna. Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Mortuary. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Govier Brothers Mortuary.
A memorial has been established to Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Mr. Schaad was born May 26, 1922, on the family farm in the Cliff Table community west of Merna to Fred and Esther May (Runkey) Schaad. He attended Fairview District 241 country school and graduated from Merna High School in 1941. Mr. Schaad trucked and worked as a mechanic in Merna.
In the late 1950s, Mr. Schaad moved to Idaho and worked in construction. In the early 1950s, he returned to the Cliff community to help his parents on the farm. He continued to farm and do custom work for others. In the mid 1980s, Mr. Schaad retired from farming, but continued to do various construction jobs for people. In April 1997, he became a resident of Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Mr. Schaad was a member of the Cliff Church, the Merna Fire Department and treasurer of the Rural Fire Board, and a member of the Cliff cemetery Board. He enjoyed tinkering and being a jack-of-all-trades.
Survivors include two brothers, Leroy of Callaway and Leland of Clearwater, Fla. and four sisters, Lucille Minnick of Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow, Margaret Burton of Kearney and Flora Schaad and Alice Schaad, both of Broken Bow.
He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Phyllis.
