Robert L. May
CHAPMAN -- Robert "Bob" L. May, 61, of Chapman died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999 at Skilled Care at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island after a lengthy illness.
Services are pending with Klein Funeral Home.
Martha Kostlan
PLACERVILLE, Calif. -- Martha Kostlan, 101, of Placerville, Calif., formerly of Grand Island, died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at the Eldorado Convalescent Home in Placerville.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Richard Bacon will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Grand Generation Senior Center in Grand Island.
Mrs. Kostlan was born Sept. 22, 1898 in Hall County to Franz and Anna (Hargens) Wieck. She attended school at District 51 School and Grand Island High School.
She married
Albert Kostlan on Feb. 6, 1953, in Columbus. The couple lived on Seedling Mile in Grand Island.
For several years, she owned and operated Martha's Café. When she retired, Martha's Café was sold to her niece, Delores Kalskett.
After the death of her husband in 1974, she moved to Placerville, Calif. to be near her daughter of Diamond Springs, Calif.
She was a member of the Jolly Workers Homemaking Club and the Union Pacific Oldtimers Club No. 16.
Survivors include one daughter, LaVonne (Mrs. Maurice) Williams of Diamond Spring, Calif., one grandson and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers and six sisters.
Milton Francis
Milton J. Francis, 72, of Grand Island died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999, at his home.
Graveside services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. J. L. Jones officiating.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Immanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. J. L. Jones officiating.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Francis was born Oct. 22, 1927, to George and Olive (Astleford) Francis at Butte. He grew up and attended first through 11th grades at Butte and then graduated from McPherson Kansas High School. He entered the U.S. Army on Jan. 25, 1946, and served with the 71st Signal Service BN, serving in Japan. He received his discharge on March 30, 1947.
He married
Margueritte L. Curd on Nov. 21, 1948, at Amherst. The couple lived in Kearney where he was employed by the Bureau of Land Reclamation. He later ran his own mail route for 10 years. In 1951, they moved to Grand Island and he worked for New Holland and MFS.
He attended Immanuel Baptist Church.
He enjoyed gardening, bird watching, music, camping, fishing and his family.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Tom Francis of Grand Island; one daughter, Mary (Mrs. Elwyn) Schweitzer of Grand Island; two grandchildren; and two brothers, George Francis of Kearney and Bob Francis of Royal.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clayton and Casper and a sister, Sylvia.
Cameron Kamphaus
Cameron A. Kamphaus, 30, of Grand Island died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with the Rev. Donald Larmore and the Rev. Frank Holeck officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with a 7 p.m. rosary. Memorials are suggested to the family's choice. Kleine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Kamphaus was born Oct. 5, 1969, to Michael J. and Yvonne M. (Anderson) Kamphaus. He grew up in Europe and the United States. He attended school in Saudi Arabia and the United States. He came with his family to the United States in 1978 to settle in Grand Island.
He is a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and had served as an altar boy when he was younger. He enjoyed wrestling in school and was an artist.
Survivors include his parents, Michael and Yvonne Kamphaus of Grand Island; one daughter, Camrey of Grand Island; one brother, Callan of Doniphan; and one sister, Lisa (Mrs. Eric) Smith of Aurora.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
Albert Madsen
Albert Madsen, 91, of Grand Island, formerly of Dannebrog, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, at his home after an illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Kleine Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rob Pearson officiating. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Kleine Funeral Home Chapel. The family will be receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church at Dannebrog.
Mr. Madsen was born Aug. 14, 1908, at Dannebrog to Paul and Metta (Mickelsen) Madsen. He graduated from Dannebrog High School and attended Grand Island Business College.
He married
Elsie Harvey on Oct. 9, 1935, at St. Paul. They farmed in the Cleveland Precinct near Dannebrog. The Madsens moved to Grand Island in 1977.
Mr. Madsen was a member of the First Baptist Church in Dannebrog. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and playing pool.
Survivors include his wife of Grand Island; one son, Roger Madsen of Lincoln; three daughters, Marilyn (Mrs. Leland) Steffen of Grand Island, Lorraine (Mrs. Leonard) Boltz of Grand Island and Cynthia (Mrs. Jack) Sellers of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence; twin sisters, Mildred and Mabel; six half-brothers; five half-sisters; and one grandson.
LaVerne Swafford
LaVerne Swafford, 83, of Grand Island died Thursday Dec. 16, 1999, at her home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Dwayne Bennett will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the church or St. Francis Medical Center Hospice.
Mrs. Swafford was born on March 22, 1916, to James J. and Bessie L. (Clements) Bozarth near Arapaho, Okla. She grew up on a farm in Custer County, Okla., and graduated from high school at Arapaho.
She married
William "Luther" Swafford on April 4, 1936, at Cloud Chief, Okla. The couple lived in Grand Island.
After raising her children, Mrs. Swafford was employed as a seamstress for Miller and Paine. Mr. Swafford died June 15, 1989.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, James Swafford of Rock Springs, Wyo.; four daughters, Sharon Swafford of Kearney, Linda (Mrs. John) Barger of Severna Park, Md., Barbara Morris of Scottsdale, Ariz. and Justine (Mrs. Rick) Adkisson of Las Cruces, N.M.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Jimmy Bozarth of Clinton, Okla.; and seven sisters, Ruth (Mrs. Myron) Alexander of Largo, Fla., Anna Lee (Mrs. Glenn) Grant of Arapaho, Nadine (Mrs. Doyle) Marquis of Custer City, Okla., Dorothy Clothier, Doris McLaughlin and Patricia Carroll, all of Oklahoma City, and Margaret (Mrs. Bob) Walton of Gainesville, Texas.
