Roger Cowan
MARQUETTE -- Roger L. Cowan, 73, of Marquette died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Central City. The Rev. Joy Savage will officiate. Mr. Cowan was cremated.
Memorials are suggested to Tabitha Hospice. The Solt Funeral Home of Central City is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Cowan was born on Jan. 24, 1927, in Danville, Va., to Clarence and Lillie Cowan. He attended George Washington High School.
He entered the U.S. Navy in November of 1944 and served in the South Pacific until 1946 when he returned to Danville and began working for the Imperial Tobacco Company. In 1951 he entered the U.S. Air Force and served until his retirement in August 1969.
He was employed by LeFebure Corp. of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, as vice president of sales until his retirement in 1992 when he moved to Marquette.
He married
Shirley L. Melcher on Oct. 8, 1988, in Denver.
He was a member of the Scottish Rite of Sioux City, Iowa, and the Masonic Lodge 436 of Gadbrook, Iowa.
Mr. Cowan enjoyed woodworking, especially building birdhouses and reproductions of historical buildings in the area.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; four sons, Todd of Denver, Colo., Paul of Olathe, Kan., Roger of Colbert, Ga., and Arden Nagengast of Lincoln; one daughter, Diane Hyde of Littleton, Colo.; nine grandchildren and two sisters, Evelyn Hardy and Lois Walker, both of Danville, Va.
He was preceded in death by a twin granddaughter and by two brothers, Kenneth and Richard Cowan.
Buena Crandell
CENTRAL CITY -- Buena M. Crandell, 96, of Central City died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at her home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the United Presbyterian Church of Central City. The Rev. Dale Sallans will officiate. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the Solt Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday.
Mrs. Crandell was born in Sidney, Iowa on Jan. 31, 1904, to Clayborn and Jessie (Fox) Jackson. She graduated from high school in Nebraska City and then worked in a shirt factory in Nebraska City.
She married
Mark L. Crandell on July 2, 1925, in Nebraska City. They lived in Franklin, Fullerton, Columbus and Edgar. In 1936, they moved to Central City where she worked for the Farmer's Union, Hudgens 5-10 Cent Store, Hested and later she owned and operated the Style Shoppe for seven years,
She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church where she served as deacon and Short-Term Clerk of Session. She was a member of the Arbor Chapter No. 200, Order of the Eastern Star, Central City and served as Worthy Matron 1946. She was a Jobs Daughters guardian for five years and grand officer of the Grand Bethel of Jobs Daughter Supervisor for three years.
Survivors include two daughters, Beverly J. of Central City and Carol (Mrs. Darwin) Dasher of Winterset, Iowa; one son, Donovan of Central City; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, seven sisters and one brother.
Clinton Douglass
BREWSTER -- Clinton W. Douglass, 24, of Brewster, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at Cozad.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Brewster Community Building in Brewster with the Rev. Tim Pearson officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
Memorials are suggested to the Brewster Community Building or the Brewster American Legion.
Iverson Memorial Chapel of Broken Bow is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Douglass was born on July 29, 1976, in Ord to Larry and Donna (Guggenmos) Douglass. He attended Brewster Elementary and two years at Sandhills High School. He then transferred and graduated from Broken Bow in 1995.
He attended UNK for two years and then he took a correspondence course in medical transcriptions.
Mr. Douglass helped on the family ranch from the time he was a young child to adulthood. He enjoyed science fiction movies and books. His favorite was Star Trek and he collected Star Trek memorabilia. He also enjoyed nature and the creatures that inhabited it.
In 1994, he went to England with his grandfather, Don Guggenmos, to the 50th anniversary of Normandy. They took an American flag and planted it on Normandy Beach. This was a highlight in his life.
Survivors include his parents, Larry and Donna of Brewster; one brother, Terrence of Grand Island; one sister, Holly of Brewster; a grandmother, Bette Guggenmos of Broken Bow; grandparents, Jerold and Jaqueline Douglass of Merna; a great-grandmother, Vera Douglass-Folchert of North Platte and a stepgreat-grandmother, Melba Guggenmos of San Gabriel, Calif.
He was preceded by his grandfather, Don Guggenmos.
Minnie Gizinski
KENESAW -- Minnie Gizinski, 91, of Kenesaw died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at her home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Jackson-Wilson Chapel in Kenesaw. The Rev. Earl Higgins will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in the Kenesaw Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. until service time on Monday.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mrs. Gizinski was born Aug. 27, 1909, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Gustave and Karen (Evensen) Martensen. She grew up in South Dakota and went to school in Tripp County, S.D.
She married
Stephen F. Gizinski on Nov. 11, 1930, in South Dakota. The couple farmed in South Dakota and Nebraska most of their married
life. They retired in 1974 to a small acreage in Glenvil and moved to Kenesaw in 1989.
She was a member of the Kenesaw Senior Citizens.
Survivors include two daughters, Frances (Mrs. Dave) Hunter of Kenesaw, and Dorothy (Mrs. Bernie) Puetz of Clarkson, Wash.; four sons, Kenneth of Kenesaw, Robert and Donald, both of Clarkson, Wash., and Larry of Grand Island; one sister, Kay Cole of Parkston, S.D.; and one brother, Lloyd Martensen of San Marcos, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers; and one sister.
Theron Nolte
LOUP CITY -- Theron Nolte, 93, formerly of Ord, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at the Roselane Nursing Center in Loup City.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Ord United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jim Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery. Burial rites will be conducted by the I.O.O.F Lodge of Ord.
Visitation will be prior to service time Monday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Ord United Methodist Church or the donor's choice.
