Clarence Snodgrass
SPALDING -- Clarence L. Snodgrass, 90, of Spalding died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, in the Friendship Villa in Spalding.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding with the Rev. Joe Hannappel officiating. Burial will be at St. Michael's Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. with a 7:30 rosary Sunday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to Spalding Academy.
Dolce Scheef Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Snodgrass was born Dec. 7, 1910, in Primrose to George and Sadie (Henderson) Snodgrass. He attended grade school in Primrose. He farmed with his father and enjoyed playing baseball.
Mr. Snodgrass married
Lucille Catherine Vanderloop on April 27, 1931, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. They moved to Spalding where he farmed, worked for the CCC and ran heavy equipment.
During World War II, he worked at the ammunition plant in Grand Island. He later worked for the state of Nebraska until 1951 when he became a salesman for Moormans Manufacturing until he retired in 1973.
During his retirement, Clarence enjoyed gardening and putting up great Christmas displays.
Survivors include three daughters, Patt (Mrs. Bob) Glaser of Spalding, Mary Lou (Mrs. John) Harris of Omaha and Barbara (Mrs. Russ) Leoni of Skokic, Ill.; three sons, Clarence R. of Tecoma, Wash., Tom of Omaha and Jim of Milwaukee; one sister, Geraldine Renoude of Oakland, Calif.; one brother, Gerald of Belgrade; 59 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, two sisters, Ina Hickman and Marion Ervin and three brothers, Harold, Leonard and Raymond.
Birdella Stevens
SHELTON -- Birdella J. Stevens, 93, of Shelton died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Shelton United Methodist Church. The Rev. John Ewton will officiate. Burial will be in the Shelton Cemetery.
No visitation is planned.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the Shelton Emergency Unit.
Godberson Mortuary of Gibbon/Shelton is in charge of arrangements.
Ms. Stevens was born June 21, 1907, in Shelton to George and Sylvia (Walker) Dawson. She grew up and attended school in Shelton, where she graduated in 1923. She attended Hastings College, Chadron State College and Kearney State Teachers College where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree and life time teacher's certificate.
Her name also appeared as an outstanding teacher in "Who's Who of Teachers of America."
She married
Rodney Stevens on March 8, 1938, in Shelton. The couple lived in western Nebraska where she taught school. They also lived in eastern Colorado before moving back to Shelton in 1946, where he farmed and she taught school. She taught for 27 years in Shelton and retired in 1973.
She was a member of the church, Rebekah Lodge of Shelton, and the Nebraska Teacher's Association.
Survivors include one son, Robert of St. Louis; two daughters, Marilynn Eickhoff of Omaha and Marjorie Carpenter of Overland Park, Kan.; three sisters, Ida Mae Morley of Hillsboro, Ore., Dorothy Wagner of Clovis, Calif., and Georgia "June" Stutsman of Redding, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, George, in infancy, and Richard.
Donna Vanderheiden
BROKEN BOW -- Donna Vanderheiden, 60, of Broken Bow, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000 at her home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Broken Bow. Father Todd Philipsen and Father Harry Kurtenbach will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery in Rockville.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at the Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. A Christian wake service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association or the Melham Park Memorial.
Mrs. Vanderheiden was born May 15, 1940 in Boelus to Stephen J. and Gertrude (Sobieszczyk) Kalkowski. She grew up on a farm north of Boelus and graduated from Boelus High School in 1957.
She married
Donald Vanderheiden on Aug. 8, 1957 in Rockville. Mr. Vanderheiden was an educator and the couple lived in various communities including Boelus, Guide Rock, Fairfield, Crawford, Central City, Osmond, Falls City and Lincoln. They had lived in Broken Bow since 1979. She drove a school bus for 19 years and later drove for Pony Express.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Broken Bow and was involved in the Nebraska One Box Pheasant Hunt.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, William of Mobile, Ala., Timothy of North Platte and Randal of Kearney; six grandchildren; her mother, Gertrude Kalkowski of Loup City; two brothers, James Kalkowski of Rockville and Jerry Kalkowski of Kalamazoo, Mich.; and two sisters, Mary Ellen Bruns of Grand Island and Marjorie Hierlmeier of Des Moines, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her father and one grandson.
Betty Warner
STROMSBURG -- Betty Lou Warner, 73, of Stromsburg, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at the York General Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Salem Lutheran Church in Stromsburg. The Rev. Keith Brozek will officiate. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg.
Mrs. Warner was born Oct. 16, 1927, in Grand Island to Walter R. and Martha E. (Anderson) Seymour. She attended school in Benedict and graduated from Benedict High School. After graduation she was employed at a law office in York for a short period of time.
She married
Morace G. Warner on March 24, 1946, at Zion Lutheran Church in Benedict. The couple resided southeast of Stromsburg on a farm.
She was a homemaker. She sold Avon for a number of years. She was a member of the U-Go-I-Go Club, Salem Lutheran Church and the church circle. She enjoyed music and served as a soloist at many weddings and funerals in the area. She was a beloved mother and grandmother.
Survivors include four daughters, Linda of York, Patricia (Mrs. Terry) Mentink of Osceola, Teresa Brown of Hastings and Lisa (Mrs. Scott) Johnson of Stromsburg; one son, Rodney of Lincoln; one sister, JoAnne (Mrs. Willard) Bolton of Benedict; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Mary Schuyler
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Mary Huston Schuyler, 64, of Santa Fe, N.M., died Saturday, November 25, 2000, in the Tucson Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz., of pneumonia after several bouts with cancer.
A private burial service will be Monday in Santa Fe. The Rev. Sid C. Huston, Mrs. Schuyler's nephew, will assist in the service. A celebration memorial service will be at a later date.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, Santa Fe chapter, 839 Paseo de Peralta, Suite H, Santa Fe, N.M. 87501.
Mrs. Schuyler was born Nov. 10, 1936, in Grand Island to Paul C. and Hazel F. Huston. She grew up and graduated from high school in Grand Island, where she was active in cheerleading and homecoming queen for the basketball team.
She attended the University of Nebraska and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority.
Mrs. Schuyler married
Robert L. Schuyler of Grand Island on June 13, 1958. They lived in Lewiston, Idaho; Tacoma, Wash.; and Santa Fe.
She was involved in many civic activities and enjoyed singing in her church and community groups.
She is survived by her husband; four daughters, Kyley Hodge of Laguna Beach, Calif., Nina of San Francisco, Melynn Campbell of Santa Fe and Gwyer of Ojai, Calif.; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Tedd C. Huston of Mesa, Ariz. and Sam C. Huston of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
