Irma Schreiner
Irma B. Schreiner, 86, of Grand Island died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Tiffany Square Care Center.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. John Hayes will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Mrs. Schreiner was born on Nov. 14, 1914, in Eberswealde, Germany, to Emil and Anna Bertha (Schwendig) Rudnich. She grew up in Meadow Grove and was educated there.
She married
Howard Clark in 1936. She was a cook at the governor's mansion for Gov. Robert Crosby and Gov. Victor Anderson. She then moved to Minnesota, where she was a cook at a health spa.
She married
John Schreiner.
She moved back to Grand Island in 1967 and worked as a housekeeper and caretaker for the Jack Hansen family. She retired in 1976 but continued to spend time with the Hansen family.
Survivors include one daughter, Carol Ann Gayheart of Florida; and two sisters, Viola Green of Grand Island and Charlotte Warneke of Norfolk.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Leslie Clark; one sister, Margaret Kahler; and two brothers, Emil Rudnich Jr. and Arnold Rudnich.
Alice Fries
ST. PAUL -- Alice E. Fries, 95, of St. Paul died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000 at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Dannebrog with the Rev. Robert Carlson Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Ridge cemetery in Dannebrog.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Chris Hansen
KEARNEY -- Chris W. Hansen, 104, of Kearney died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church with the Revs. Jan Sturgis and Robert Park officiating. Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. at the Silver Creek cemetery with the Rev. Bev Minor officiating.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Horner-Lieske-Horner Mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the University of Nebraska at Kearney Foundation-Mildred (Benson) Hansen Scholarship Fund.
Mr. Hansen was born on Sept. 20, 1896, near Loup City to Nicholas and Paulina (Jung) Hansen. He was educated in Loup City and then attended Kearney Normal School.
He taught in a rural school in Sherman County until entering military service in 1918. He served in the U.S. Army until he was discharged in 1919.
He married
Mildred E. Benson on Aug. 30, 1925, in Silver Creek. They moved to Kearney.
He rejoined the military in 1943 and served in the U.S Navy until 1945. He took a job with the civil service and worked for the post office for 41 years until retiring in 1963 as assistant postmaster.
He was a member and past president of the Kearney Rotary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 759, a life member of American Legion Post 52, World War I and World War II Retreads and the Disabled American Veterans.
He was appointed an admiral of the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska by Gov. Robert Kerrey in 1984 and was also active in Kearney Elks Lodge 984 and received the Elk of the Year award in 1996.
Survivors include many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, five brothers and four sisters.
Lores Hornickel
ORD -- Lores LaVerne Hornickel, 79, of Ord, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church. The Rev. Gerald Roggow will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery. The Ord VFW and the American Legion will conduct military rites.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to St. John's Lutheran Church.
Mr. Hornickel was born June 17, 1921, in the rural Mira Valley area of Valley County south of Ord to Everett Robert and Frieda Wilhemena (Malottke) Hornickel. He grew up on a farm west of North Loup. He attended Mira Valley District 57 elementary school and St. John's Parochial school.
He entered the service in 1942 and was stationed around the country, finally completing his tour of duty in Hawaii at the end of the war. He stayed in Hawaii to help clean up following the war.
While he was stationed in Hawaii he also worked in a pineapple cannery until 1946. He returned to Valley County and began farming with his father, Everett for several years. He did custom harvesting and worked at the alfalfa mill running a chopper during the 60's.
Mr. Hornickel married
Velma A. Bockstadter on Aug. 20, 1950 at Grace Lutheran Church in Wood River. In 1957 the couple moved their young family to Buena Vista, Colo. Mr. Hornickel worked in the mines around Leadville, Colo. and ran a trailer rental business. A year later they returned to Nebraska where he continued to farm until illness prevented him from working.
He was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he served on various boards and committees. He was also a member of the Ord VFW and American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Roger of North Loup; two daughters, Rogene (Mrs. Michael) Rogers of Bemidji, Minn. and Ronda Tucker of Ord; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, John and three sons, Larry, Rodney and Randy.
Alice Lassen
ELBA -- Alice F. Lassen, 82, of Elba died Monday, Dec. 11, 2000, at the Rose Lane Nursing Home in Loup City.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Martha Voigt will officiate. Burial will be in the Elba Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Elba EMTs.
Mrs. Lassen was born on April 11, 1918, northeast of Cotesfield to John and Mary (Gorecki) Szwanek. She grew up northeast of Cotesfield and attended rural school there. After her education, she did domestic work in the St. Paul and Palmer areas.
She married
Edward Lassen on May 10, 1939, in Ord. The couple lived south of Cotesfield on a farm until 1980, when they moved into Elba. She entered the Rose Lane Nursing Home in 1993.
She enjoyed flowers and sewing. She was a member of the Helping Hands Extension Club of Elba.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Gale and Randie, both of Elba, and Mick of Cotesfield; one daughter, Kristie (Mrs. Bill) Bunger of Upland; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, EzyDora Bennett of Cheney, Kan.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Steven Szwanek; and one sister, Ernstyma Szwanek.
