Sadie Scheel
CAIRO -- Sadie (Bruhn) Scheel, 77, of Cairo died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Cairo United Methodist Church. The Rev. Alan Davis will officiate. Burial will be at the Westlawn cemetery in Grand Island.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Apfel Funeral Home in Cairo.
Memorials are suggested to the Ravenna Good Samaritan Center or the donor's choice.
Mrs. Scheel was born Nov. 9, 1923, at Grand Island to Henry and Martha (Herman) Meyer. She graduated from Cairo High School in 1941.
She married
Donald Bruhn on Feb. 6, 1946, in Grand Island. The couple farmed southeast of Cairo. Mr. Bruhn died in 1963, and Mrs. Bruhn continued to farm until 1966.
She married
Wilmer Scheel on Aug. 19, 1966, in Grand Island. The couple farmed south of Alda. Following the death of Mr. Scheel, Mrs. Scheel moved to Grand Island, where she was employed by St. Francis Medical Center. After retirement, she moved to Cairo. She entered the Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna in 1992.
She was a member of Cairo United Methodist Church.
She enjoyed reading, cooking, dancing, playing cards and being with her family.
Survivors include two sons, Randy Bruhn of Albuquerque, N.M., and Allen Bruhn of Stromsburg; a daughter, Patricia Harder of Cairo; two stepchildren, Kenneth Scheel of Grand Island and Jean Ann Spiehs of Alda; eight grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands; one granddaughter; one step-grandson; and two brothers, Orville and Laverne Meyer.
Cleo Wood
BROKEN BOW -- Cleo Kennedy Wood, 87, of Broken Bow died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, in Lincoln.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church in Broken Bow. The Revs. Jim Stark and Larry Coulter will officiate. Burial will be at the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the Govier Brothers Mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church.
Mrs. Wood was born April 2, 1913, at Merna to Hohn and Flora Kennedy. They lived in and around Merna.
She worked at the City Cafe in Broken Bow.
She married
Latimer Wood on Dec. 25, 1937, in Taylor. The couple lived in and around Sargent and moved to Broken Bow in 1952.
Mrs. Wood was a homemaker.
She was a member of the First Christian Church, where she was active in the church circle and other activities.
She enjoyed cooking, baking, her family and fishing.
Survivors include a daughter, Winifred (Mrs. George) Roseberry of Lincoln; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Latimer; and 12 brothers and sisters.
Leo Kirby
LINCOLN -- Leo F. Kirby, 88, of Lincoln died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, in Lincoln.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island with the Rev. Richard Karohl officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Grand Generation Center or to Hospice of Nebraska.
Mr. Kirby was born on Nov. 26, 1912, to Cassius Marcellus "John" and Minnie (Oberhelman) Kirby at Fairbury. He grew up and received his education in Fairbury, graduating from Fairbury Public Schools. After high school he worked as a labor foreman for the E.J. Cekal Building Contractor Company.
He married
Lillian Zavitka on June 22, 1935, at Valley. Following his marriage, he was employed as a mechanic by the Hesselgesser Garage in Elba before enlisting in the United States Army on October 23, 1943, to serve during World War II. He was honorably discharged November 21, 1945 and he returned to work at Hesselgesser Oldsmobile in Grand Island. He then was employed by Owl Auto Parts from 1966 until his retirement in 1978.
Mrs. Kirby preceded him in death on April 2, 1990. Mr. Kirby had been a resident of Lincoln since May of 1998.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Hayes of Omaha and B. Jane (Mrs. Bruce) Lehmann of Lincoln; three grandchildren and a sister, Jaunita Flagle of Texas.
He was preceded by his wife Lillian; three sisters, Jane Ham, Daisy James, and Lillie Cunningham; and three brothers, Donald Kirby, Cecil Kirby and Guy Kirby.
Thomas Koehler Jr.
LINCOLN -- Thomas R. Koehler Jr., 32, of Lincoln, formerly of Grand Island, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Indian Hills Community Church, 1000 S. 84th St., Lincoln. The Rev. Greg Rugh will officiate. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery.
Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Monday at Butherus, Maser and Love Funeral Home, 4040 A St., Lincoln. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family and Wells Fargo Bank c/o Erica Koehler.
Mr. Koehler was a 1986 graduate of Lincoln East High School. He owned Koehler Legacy Builders.
He was a member of the NRA.
Survivors include his wife, Erica; a son, Austin; his mother, Linda Koehler of Lincoln; three sisters, Andrea Koehler of Omaha, Cheryl Koehler of Lincoln and Suzy (Mrs. Drew) Thompson of Lincoln; and a brother, Raymond Koehler of Lincoln.
Arline Otto
Arline E. Otto, 69, of Grand Island, formerly of Wood River, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Memorial services will be at 3:15 p.m. Sunday at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River. The Rev. Gretchen Diers will officiate. There will be no visitation. Mrs. Otto was cremated.
Mrs. Otto was born July 15, 1931, at Wood River to William and Esther (Bennett) Filkins. She attended school in Wood River and graduated from the Wood River High School.
She married
Dale E. Otto on May 20, 1950, at Grand Island. The couple lived in Virginia and later returned to the Wood River area. She worked for the Wood River Sunbeam for around 30 years. She retired in 1994. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Wood River.
Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn Starkey of Dannebrog; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Wayne Filkin of Grand Island; and four sisters, Joy Holtzen of Aurora, Helen Skeen of Wood River, June Smith of Garden Grove and Roycelene Gilbert of Costa Mesa, Calif.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter and a great-grandson.
