Marie Henderson
STROMSBURG -- Marie M. Henderson, 91, of Stromsburg died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at York General Hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Salem Lutheran Church. The Rev. Keith Brozek will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery at York.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg.
Mrs. Henderson was born on Dec. 14, 1908, to John S. and Blanche P. (Hedges) Druba. She attended country school near Stockham and graduated from Aurora High School in 1925.
She married
Walter E. Hoffman on Oct. 24, 1925. The family lived on the family farm southeast of Polk. Mr. Hoffman died on Nov. 22, 1960.
She married
Willard Henderson on Feb. 7, 1967. They lived southeast of Polk. Mrs. Henderson worked at the Midwest Covenant Home as an aide from 1961 until retiring in 1980. Mr. Henderson died in 1983.
Mrs. Henderson continued living on the farm until April 22, 1993, when she moved to Midwest Covenant Home.
She enjoyed flowers, gardening and fishing.
Survivors include one daughter, Helen (Mrs. Verland) Johnson of Osceola; one son, Curtis Hoffman of Benedict; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Inez Hosier of Giltner; and two brothers, Royal Druba of Novato, Calif., and Elmer Druba of Superior.
She was preceded in death by one great-great-grandson; four brothers, Jack, Wayne, Lee and Marian; and one sister, Thelma.
Hazel Nelson
SARGENT -- Hazel Gretchen Nelson, 89, of Sargent died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Rev. Bill Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Fort McPherson National cemetery at Maxwell.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to family's choice.
Jess Duden
AINSWORTH -- Seaman Recruit Jess Allan Duden, 18, of Ainsworth died Sept. 18, 2000, after a short illness at the North Chicago Veterans Hospital during his sixth week of U.S. Navy recruit training at Great Lakes, Ill.
Services were on Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Ainsworth. The Rev. Gerald H. Schwarz officiated. Military graveside services were on Monday at East Park cemetery near Ainsworth.
Memorials are suggested to the Ainsworth High School fine arts or speech departments.
Hoch Funeral Home of Ainsworth was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Duden was born on March 31, 1982, at the Brown County Hospital in Ainsworth to Larry and Elaine Duden. He was the fourth generation of his family to attend the District 20 (Pleasant Hill) rural school. He completed his secondary education in May 2000 at Ainsworth Community High School.
He had a love for learning about new places, new people and discovering how people, as well as things, were put together. He participated in band, chorus, speech, drama and the Odyssey of the Mind program. He also competed as a cross-country runner.
Survivors include his parents; two sisters, Megan Duden of Grand Island and Kaytlyn at home; one brother, Casey at home; and his grandmother, Lois Smith.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Glen and Margaret Coleman and Marie and Orville Duden Sr.
Linda Hansen
GOTHENBURG -- Linda A. (Luther) Hansen, 44, of Gothenburg died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at Gothenburg Memorial Hospital.
Services are pending with Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Betty Osborne
EDGAR -- Betty Osborne, 78, of Edgar died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, at Integrated Health Care Services in Edgar.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Williams Funeral Home in Edgar. The Rev. Harold Fox will officiate. Burial will be in the Edgar Cemetery.
Mrs. Osborne was born on Oct. 9, 1921, in Brady to Melvin and Pearl (Doran) Helberg. She grew up in Brady and attended schools there.
She married
Melvin Osborne on May 25, 1939, at Cozad. The couple lived at Cozad, where Mr. Osborne was a heavy equipment operator. They moved to different job sites in connection with his construction business before moving to Edgar in 1955 and retiring.
Survivors include four sons, Larry of LaVista, Dean of Grand Island, Bradley of Orrick, Mo., and Lynn of Bladen; three daughters, Judy Hoffman of Ayr, Linda Battershell of McCook and Peggy Ericksen of Blair; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Frank Helberg of Lincoln, Neal Helberg of Tucson, Ariz., and Seth Helberg of Reno Valley, Calif.; and three sisters, Claire Lane of Llano, Texas, Signe Helberg of Boulder, Colo., and Effie Johnson of Edgar.
Her husband died on Oct. 22, 1991. She was preceded in death by one grandson, two sisters and one brother.
Kenneth Shindo
DALLAS -- Kenneth Malcolm Saburo Shindo, 84, formerly of Grand Island, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, in Dallas.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. John Douglas Russell will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Mr. Shindo was born on June 19, 1916, in Grand Island to Saburo and Evadna Shindo. He graduated 1935 from Grand Island Senior High, where he excelled at all sports, including swimming and diving. He attended the University of Nebraska and was the starting end in 1936, '37 and '38.
He married
Hazel McElheny on Sept. 6, 1939, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. For a while, he ran the Sunshine Cafe in Lincoln, a home away from home for many Nebraska football players.
They later returned to Grand Island, where he worked for Fairmont Creamery and later for the Chevrolet Garage. He built Broadwell Auto Service in 1953 and owned it for many years. He worked for Diers Motor Co. before retiring.
Upon retirement, he and his wife became active members in the G.I. CB Club, Civil Defense and the Hall County March of Dimes. They moved to Dallas in 1990. Mrs. Shindo died in 1992.
Mr. Shindo was a former member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church and the Platt-Duetsche. He held a longtime membership in the Nebraska "N" (Lettermen's) and Alumni clubs. He loved cats and dogs.
Survivors include one daughter, Judith (Mrs. Tom) Hall of Dallas; and one sister, Yolanda Ranslem of Pasadena, Calif.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Rodney.
Erma Landon
LOUP CITY -- Erma M. Landon, 83, of Loup City died Monday, Jan. 5, 2001, at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Loup City with the Revs. Douglas DeNeui and Kevin Nihart officiating. Burial will be a the Evergreen cemetery in Loup City.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City. Memorials are suggested to the Missionary Fund of First Baptist Church.
Erma May Landon was born Sept. 25, 1917, at Arcadia to Leslie and Pearl (Leininger) Landon. She received her elementary education at District 9 (Mixed Grove) in Sherman County. She graduated from Arcadia High School in 1935 in the first class to be graduated from the new school building. She and her three sisters received Bachelor of Science degrees from the University of Nebraska on Aug. 4, 1961.
She began her teaching career in 1944 at the Balsora School in Sherman County. She taught other rural schools in Sherman, Custer and Howard counties before teaching elementary grades in Rockville, Cairo, St. Paul and Arcadia, where she retired in 1979 after a total of 35 years. After retiring she was a substitute teacher for nine years.
She accepted the Lord while in high school, was baptized on Oct. 25, 1942 and joined Balsora Baptist Church. She maintained her membership there until 1947, when she transferred to First Baptist Church in Loup City. She the junior and primary Sunday school classes at First Baptist for more than 40 years.
She enjoyed sewing and fancy work, collecting recipes, baking, cooking, traveling and letter writing. In 1986, she was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.
Survivors include her sisters, Alta, Dorothy and Florence of Loup City; a brother, Don Landon of Arcadia and several relatives.
