Barbara Lewis
BURWELL-- Barbara Jane Lewis, 76, of Burwell died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at St. Francis in Grand Island.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Burwell. The Rev. Kevin Murray will officiate. Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Ulysses cemetery in Ulysses, Kan.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
Memorials are suggested to the Cedar Creek Bible Church in care of Draperies or the Burwell Community Fund in care of Library Improvement.
Mrs. Lewis was born Feb. 3, 1924, in Grant County, Kan., in Ulysses to George H. and Ora G. (Yohn) McGillivray. She received her education in Ulysses where she went to Girl's State and graduated from Grant County Rural High School. She joined the Methodist Church in Ulysses at an early age. She worked at Sullivan's Elevator weighing grain after high school.
She married
John Douglas Lewis on Feb. 5, 1944, in Garden City, Kan. Mr. Lewis worked for his dad for four years. They moved to Nebraska in 1949 to a ranch on the Calamus River Valley. He died on Nov. 5, 1998.
Mrs. Lewis enjoyed making homemade syrups, candy and cooking. Her hobbies included family, bowling, fishing, sewing and crocheting. She also made wedding cakes.
She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge 635 in Ulysses since 1942, the Valley View Ladies Club, the Junior Matrons Club and the Legion Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary since 1967.
Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis (Mrs. Rowan) Ballagh and Patricia (Mrs. Dave) Mitchell all of Amelia; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one brother Glenn Edward; and three sisters, Virginia Roberts of Ulysses, Mary McCoy and Georgia Blalock, both of Bullhead City, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, John Douglas "Rusty" Lewis, Jr.; and one infant brother, George Harvey.
Esther Lewis
CENTRAL CITY -- Esther Myrtle Lewis, 89, of Central City died on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.
There will be no services. Mrs. Lewis donated her body to medical science.
Mrs. Lewis was born on Dec. 29, 1911, in Eddyville to Henry and Minnie (Kramer) Luft. Her family lived in many communities in Nebraska, including the York and Wolbach areas, where she was educated. As a young woman, she lived with her family in St. Paul, worked in homes and helped on the family farm.
She married
Fred William Lewis on Aug. 27, 1933. They lived and farmed in the Ord area for several years before moving to Merrick County in the late 1930s. They lived in the Havens and Silver Creek area for a short time before moving to their farm between Central City and Clarks. Mr. Lewis died on Jan. 28, 1994. Mrs. Lewis continued to live on the farm until her death.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening and embroidery work.
Survivors include one son, Donald Lewis of Central City; two daughters, Doris (Mrs. Dean) Asp of Holdrege and Shirley Lewis of Central City; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Luke Luft of Edgar.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant brother.
Art Webb
ST. PAUL-- Art J. Webb, 85, of St. Paul died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at his home.
Services are pending at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home.
Helen Berrick
BELLEVUE -- Helen E. Berrick, 76, of Bellevue died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at her home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Bellevue.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Kahler-Dolce Mortuary in Papillion.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, Tabitha Hospice or the donor's choice.
Mrs. Berrick was born on Nov. 29, 1924, in Parkersburg, W. Va., to Arley and Freda (Williams) Griffin. She attended and graduated from Doddridge County High School. She then attended nursing school in Baltimore. She worked as a surgical nurse in Baltimore and Chicago, where she met her husband.
She married
Dr. William H. Berrick on Aug. 20, 1951, in Denver. Besides her life as a wife and mother, she was active in her husband's medical practice, church activities, politics and volunteer work in both the community and as an Air Force officer's wife.
Survivors include three daughters, Nancy (Mrs. Steve) Hendrickson of Houston and Susan (Mrs. Tim) Pfeifer and Cindy Lou (Mrs. Scott) Beaudette, both of Grand Island; one son, John of Lincoln; and 14 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one granddaughter and one brother.
C. Laverne Dake
STROMSBURG-- C. Laverne Dake, 95, of Stromsburg, formerly of Silver Creek, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Annie Jeffrey Health Center in Osceola.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Silver Creek. The Rev. Richard Bauer will officiate. Burial will be at the Osceola Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Kepner-Roberts Funeral Home.
Masonic services will be by Osceola Lodge 65.
Mr. Dake was born Feb. 18, 1905, in Osceola to William B. and Charlotte (Heinemeyer) Dake. He received his education at Osceola and graduated from high school in 1925.
He married
Leora Young on March 3, 1937. They lived in rural Silver Creek, where he was a farmer, until moving to the Covenant Home in Stromsburg in late 1997.
He was a member of the Osceola Lodge 65 AF and AM, and the Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, Rex Dake of Silver Creek; one sister, Fern Benett of Victorville, Calif.; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; and one sister, Helen McCormick.
Mona Grabowski
DELTA, Colo. -- Mona Grabowski, 68, of Delta, Colo., died Jan. 9, 2001, at her home.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City. The Rev. Reggie Urban will officiate. Previous services were on Friday at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta. The Rev. Mark Bellinger officiated.
Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.
Mrs. Grabowski was born on Sept. 6, 1932, in Ashton as Monica Joan Maiefski to Stanley and Antoinette (Badura) Maiefski. She was raised, graduated and spent much of her adult life in Ashton.
She married
Ted Grabowski on Nov. 25, 1950, in Ashton. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last November. They moved from Denver to Delta in the spring of 1987.
Before her retirement six years ago, Mrs. Grabowski co-owned and operated Delta Rentals.
She was a member of the Catholic faith and belonged to the Good Sams Club, AARP, Delta Chamber of Commerce and a sugar diabetes support group.
Her hobbies included camping, traveling, cooking, sewing and reading.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Randy Grabowski of Denver; two daughters, Thadine (Mrs. Gary) Giambalvo of Garland, Texas, and Kim (Mrs. Perry) Bearce of Denver; three grandchildren; one brother, Ervin Maiefski of Tucson; and one sister, Carol Bandur of Loup City.
