Speed Rathbun
DURANGO, COLO.-- Dr. Speed Roland Rathbun, 75, of Durango, Colo., died Dec. 26, 2000, at Four Corners Health Care Center.
Services are still pending and will be held in March at Chadron.
Dr. Rathbun was born on June 29, 1925, in Chadron, where he attended the University of Nebraska Medical School in Omaha.
Dr. Rathbun practiced medicine in Crawford, Chadron and Sidney from 1958 to 1966, he then became a specialist in Physiatry (Physical Medicine/Rehabilitation) at the University of Colorado Medical School in Denver. He worked for the Veteran's Administration in Livermore and Hot Springs, Calif., Pueblo, Colo., and Grand Island.
He retired from practicing medicine in the late 1980s.
Survivors include two sons, Paul Rathbun of Durango, Colo. and Speed Rathbun, Jr. of Hastings; four daughters, Lori Depaulis of Eugene, Ore., DeAnn Rathbun of Washington state and LaShelle Ambrosio and Tehela Rathbun, both of Portland, Ore.; one adopted son, Eugene Rathbun of Lander, Wyo.; two adopted daughters, Joanne Guerrero and Lyn Rathbun, both of Greeley, Colo.; and ten grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gail; and two brothers, Raymond and Robert.
'Fil' Gonzales
Filemon J. "Fil" Gonzales, 63, of Grand Island died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at his home following a long illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Rev. Jose Chavez will officiate. A rosary will be at 7 p.m. Friday at All Faiths Funeral Home.
There will be no visitation. Mr. Gonzales was cremated.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Gonzales was born on Feb. 8, 1937, at Gibbon to Joe M. and Susie (Rosales) Gonzales. He was raised and educated in Grand Island.
He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1959.
He married
Elizabeth Krigbaum on June 21, 1962, in Arlington, Va. He moved in 1966 to Grand Island and in 1971 to Omaha, where he worked for Boys Town for 10 years. He returned in 1980 to Grand Island, where he worked for Eli's Lounge until 1985. He moved to Omaha for one year until moving back to Grand Island, where he worked for the city Utilities Department.
He was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral and the Eagles. He was an avid bowler for more than 40 years and enjoyed golfing and softball.
Survivors include one daughter, Elena Puente of Arlington, Va.; three grandchildren; three brothers, Tom Gonzales of Buena Park, Calif., Eli Gonzales of Grand Island and Billy Ramirez of Lincoln; three sisters, Jeri Barrientos, Lainie (Mrs. Ken) Kotinek and Bobbie Gonzales, all of Grand Island; and a special friend, Marilyn Petska.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James Dean Gonzales.
Margaret Cannon
GREELEY -- Margaret Cannon, 93, of Greeley died Sunday, January 7, 2001 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Greeley Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Revs. Gerald Carlson and John Cook will officiate. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart cemetery in Greeley.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. with vigil-rosaries at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Sacred Heart Catholic School.
T.J. Finn and Sons Mortuary of Greeley is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Cannon was born Feb. 8, 1907 in Greeley to William and Margaret (Kelly) Moran. She attended school in the Greeley area and was a graduate of Greeley High School. She taught in rural schools until her marriage.
She married
James A. Cannon on Feb. 27, 1933, at the Sacred Heart Church in Greeley. The couple farmed east of Greeley until Mr. Cannon passed away in 1957. In 1960, she moved to Greeley and taught at O'Connor and then worked for the County Superintendent's office and the County Welfare Office. She retired in 1976 and remained in Greeley.
She was a member of the Sacred Heart Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters. She belonged to a Greeley Extension Club and Sacred Heart Study Club. She enjoyed playing cards.
Survivors include two sons, James L. of Grand Island and Dennis J. of Elgin; five daughters, Margaret Mary (Mrs. John) Bush of Scottsbluff, Eileen McCarthy of Spalding, Kathleen (Mrs. Dennis) Bohuslavsky of Colorado Springs, Colo., Donna (Mrs. Jerry) Grossart of Kearney and Leona (Mrs. Bill) Warner of Ord; 24 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers and five sisters.
Lydia Deuel
AURORA -- Lydia Elizabeth Deuel, 91, of the Hamilton Manor in Aurora died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at the Hamilton Manor.
All Faiths Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Irving Elge
AURORA -- Irving Elge, 73, of Aurora died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001 at his home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Monroe Evangelical Free Church Cemetery. Burial will be in the cemetery. The Rev. Mark Dunham will officiate.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Higby Mortuary.
Mr. Elge was born April 25, 1927 in Hamilton County to Frans Oscar and Esther Sabina (Gustafson) Elge. He grew up in Hamilton County and graduated from Aurora High School in 1947. After graduation, he farmed with his father.
In 1947, he rode his Harley Davidson through snow to California and as a sheetmetal former and trimmer on the P2V2 Naval Airplane for Lockheed Aircraft Company.
In 1950, he was drafted during the Korean War and served at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal in Denver. He was trained in truck mechanics and later served at the Atomic Proving Flats in Mercury, Nev., where he assisted with the testing of Atomic Bombs. He returned to farming in 1952.
He married
Georgene May Risden on June 4, 1954 at the Monroe Evangelical Free Church near Phillips.
He started a custom hay bailing business
He attended Monroe Evangelical Free Church his entire life and was active in the men's chorus and trustee board and served as trustee chairman and the church treasurer. He traveled with Water for Life Missions to Haiti to help drill water wells in the 1980's.
He served on the extension board and as a 4-H leader.
He took flying lessons, enjoyed repairing, racing and hill climbing on Harley Davidson motorcycles. He also enjoyed studying his Bible and going to church.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Dennis, Kevin and Terry, all of Aurora, and Bruce of Fremont, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and three sisters, Francis Glad, Anna Marie (Mrs. Carl) Moore and Lois (Mrs. Dwight) Paschke.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Cecile.
